The title of this list says is all, really. The Netherlands aren't well-known for their prodiguous output of boardgames, but I decided that I'd like to have a useful reference list if someone wants to buy a game designed by a Dutchman or -woman. I came across a number of authors I had never heard from---and so might you!

This being a list of Dutch designers (and not Dutch-speaking ones), you will not find Belgian designers here. But if you feel they are unduly left out, you're welcome to add them to the list.

HANS VAN TOL

Hans is a relative newcomer in the field of Dutch designers, but his De Ontembare Stad (lit.: The Untamable City) won critical acclaim when it won the Dutch national game prize in 2005. It was subject of some controversy, as the game received an unlikely amount of first votes. Other games of Hans are Block It!, Skyline, and the cardgame 10.

CORNÉ VAN MOORSEL

Corné already has a fair number of designs under his belt, some of which I still need to try. I've only played Aloha and Ahoy; neither of them 'clicked' with me, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in the other games he created. The Boardgamegeek-data base lists 19 others; you can find those here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/designer/124. (19?! Dear lord. I have some catching up to do!)

JEROEN DOUMEN & JORIS WIERSINGA

Jeroen along with his partner in crime Joris are the driving force of the critically acclaimed label Splotter Spellen (which cannot be translated). They delight in making long and heavy games which seem to fetch hefty prices on eBay (Roads & Boats, anyone?). I'm actually looking forward to trying out the reprint: my girlfriend remarked on more than one occasion that she liked the cover artwork. She may hate the guts of the game, but if the box is cute, she will play the game.

Gerard only published two games, although he probably created a lot more prototypes. It is too bad that Krieg und Frieden has such a strong theme that it hinders play in the end---there's quite a bit of orginality in the design which makes me wonder what else he is capable of.

The dynamic duo behind a set of small, but fiendishly tactical games published under the label of Symbiose Games. I playtested Transport at a pretty late stage, and liked the idea considerably. It just ran out of steam at the end, and I'm curious to see how they solved that problem. The other games they released (LSD---Linearity, Simplicity, Duality, War Stories and Frontline) all seem intruiging. (*Makes a little note to hunt down their booth in Essen.*)

Bas runs a small company (Spel-Maker, lit.: Game Maker) which specialises in making games for companies, but now and then he takes an excursion into the uncharted regions of ordinary people games. This game is his first---and I recently held a second design (an advanced prototype) of his in his hands. We spoke only very briefly, but it should be out this fall.

Han Heidema has designed this little gem - a fast (under the hour) train-game with focus on the bidding.

He has also designed the excellent, though longer and more involved, Riding series, consisting of West Riding, Länderbahnen (and its expansion kit) and Riding through England. He's also active in the 18xx community.

Warmly recommended for those who like sharp economical games. (On the other hand, those sissies that don't like games where mistakes can ruin your winning chances, stay away - bidding mistakes can be very bad here, and there is no luck that will let a bad player catch up again - if you make a mistake, you have better hope the other players do mistakes as well, or you will be out of the running.)

These games reward skillful play - especially the Riding series - with no luck or hidden information. Dutch Intercity features blind bidding as a minor part of the game... which those looking for a pure skill game might want to avoid. West Riding and Länderbahnen doesn't have any such element.

Timing is of the essence in the Riding series, as mergers of companies is a major theme, and knowing when to trade in shares in the individual smaller companies for shares in the merger corporation is an important choice.

All four of these games have been published by Winsome games.

Maarten, your list consists of mostly "new" designers,
don't forget these oldies.

Back in the eighties they came up with the beautiful game TARGUI which even made it to the recommended list for Spiel des Jahres.

Another game from them is WEER en WIND (Meteo Business).

This one is by Sjaak Griffioen.

I don't know if he has designed more games but this is a nice one. It can be played in a very short time. A nice balance between trying to get the buildings according to your own strategy and blocking (frustrating) the other players. Usually it is short enough to have a quick rematch.

Having lived in the obscurity of the limited edition for years, this game is now back and enjoying a much broader marketing strategy. As a Dutch gamer in the UK I will endeavour to introduce this game to as many people here as I can. It's a fun two-player strategy game, with added chaos. Fans of Discworld will probably enjoy the humour in the game as well.

Rob Bontenbal designed Homas tour, which got released in 1979, and got a much more widely known rerelease as Demarrage in the Netherlands and Belgium, and as Um Reifenbreite in German.

It's a nice cycleracing games with different levels in difficulty that get's the game from a simple roll-and-move to something more gamey.
