I love BGG for what it is: an eclectic, informative, amusing and above all addictive community. Of course within this mecca of gamingness you can also find all manner of insular, elitist, ignorant, devisive, pedantic, vulgar and otherwise irritating content. That's on par for the internet, but we are on a moderated site with a mascot and a geekgold virtual economy more vibrant than most MMORPGs, so I expect better.

Here are some of the most egregiously offensive words and phrases that should be banned from BGG forever. If moderators could fine those who use these 5 GG per offence that would be a good start.

(Feel free to add your own!)

"Replayability."

I get it: you want to play the game again or it has a lot of variablity due to the cards. Established reviewers sometimes even use this word as one of their "grades" for a game! But taken by itself this word means nothing. No, that's not entirely true; it means you couldn't think of a better descriptor so the game probably isn't worth playing the first time.

This has recently become a debate killer phrase on the forums. You cite an example to disprove my broad generalization about a game? Apples and oranges.

Any questions?

"First world problem."

An elitist way of calling someone's gripe or misfortune elitist. Often used in the context of someone complaining about a retailer or game availability. The assumption being that this trivial issue is ridiculous in the context of world hunger, war and herpes.

Ok, that's understandable but isn't every damn thing on a board game website a first world issue? Check your Gandhi toga at the door, please.

Do we really need to resort to name-calling? Sure, games have fans-- you can even click to officially become one. And rest assured if you love a game someone else hates it.

Dignify a post with a response above 2nd grade level maturity or ignore it, but this stuff is like making faces in the school yard.

"Elegant"

So I've seen a lot of posts from otherwise reasonable people throwing this term around like an objective measure of their favorite game's superiority. The funny part is that no one can really pin down a universal definition for "elegant" other than "obviously this game is elegant while the one you mentioned is not." Sometimes Feld games are elegant and sometimes only Go and select abstracts (sorry, two player combinatorial games) are worthy of being called elegant.

It's a snobbish, judgemental term with no real use in a discussion about games except maybe calling a box insert an "elegant storage solution."

This follows a quote which was altered in a humorous(?) way to emphasize the poster's view. It is sometimes followed by a tongue-wagging emoticon. Unless you are absolutely positive that this is the funniest post ever conceived on the internet and the world would be thrust into a humorless depression without your amazingly witty post, resist the urge.

Maybe you could post an underrepresented meme or Youtube link instead?

Calling a game broken is like claiming that the world is going to end. Sure, you just might be right, but unless you have extremely solid evidence to back it up you're going to look like just another looney waving a poster on a street corner.

Save yourself (and everyone else) the embarrassment and say the game "didn't work with my group" instead.

"Dripping with theme."

None of the entries so far bother me at all. Nada. Zilch. All the previous terms mean something to me, have a subtext, etc. I usually get what the person is trying to say.

Dripping with theme bothers me for two reasons.

One, it's a David Letterman type word/phrase.

Would you like a snack?

Just ask me if I want something to eat!

Would you like a beverage?

Where am I, on an airline and you're a flight attendant acting as if you actually care what I want or how I feel?

. . . dripping with theme. Makes me think of some disgusting infection.

Plus, and far more importantly, this phrase is usually in reference to chrome instead of evoking a feeling in the style of play or through the game mechanics. If a game has chrome, if it has cool bits, etc. then just say that. Leave the dripping, oozing infection out of it! gulp

Mechanic

I hate it when a game is described as having a 'whatever it is' mechanic. It dosn't, if anything it has a mechanism, albeit one made of cardboard/wood/plastic/rules.

A mechanic is the person that builds or repairs a mechanism. I don't take my car to the garage and say "I think there's something wrong with the overhead camshaft mechanic".

It's 'Mechanism', and even then it not truely a mechanism is it? unless you're playing Tzolkin or Mousetrap.

Find yourself ANY thread in the Wargames subdomain asking for a game recommendation. You'll find this.

Then check most any other interrogatory thread in there. Odds are good you'll find it in those, too. Even if the question isn't asking about a game.

ARRRGGGGG! Board Games do not have souls!!! What does this even mean? To say a sentient being is soulless makes little to no sense. To say an inanimate object is soulless makes me want to punch small woodland creatures...

A game is not "soulless". It may be too abstract, not colorful enough, not enough interaction, not enough cowbell, BUT IT CANNOT BE SOULLESS.

Thank you, I feel better now.
