Okay, so I was just caught up in a recent Geek List:
I cannot resist games with ______ in them.

Reading through the list, it made me think of games that I resist because of the theme. It could be a really fantastic game and 9 out of 10 people will rave about it but you hesitate or resist it outright.

I know I'm going to get pelted with rotten tomatoes for this one but space themes are a tough sell for me. I'd play Battlestar Gallactica if I had another player, but I loved the show. I recently committed to Race for the Galaxy because it's the kind of rockin' card game I'm pretty sure I'll love. I'm learning to overlook my theme prejudice more because I'm gradually figuring out what is FUN for me. I'll give Eclipse a try eventually and maybe I'll LOVE it, but "space, the final frontier" has been a tough sell for this board gamer.

(now I duck!!)

My extreme disdain for the fashion subculture makes this one a really tough sell. (Though I do occasionally keep considering it... as apparently it's a solid game.)

As fun as being a poor farmer trying to raise livestock and feed your stinkin' family sounds...oh wait!!

Yep, theme is but part of the reason we didn't like this one. Although the fact that the game is as tedious as plowing several gazillion acres...see? The mechanics DO tie to the theme.

I've heard this a terrific solitaire game that engages the imagination as well as the intellect. Sounds like just the thing for me. But then there's that theme.

I actually bought a Lovecraft anthology and read it through, hoping I'd be impressed and then want to buy AH. But the stories mostly put me to sleep. Just couldn't get into them.

So, I don't care much for the time period, the theme, or anything--other than the fact that AH is supposedly a great, immersive game that can be played solitaire.

I absolutely detest the theme in this game. I don't think I could play it without vomiting.

---
Each turn, draw one victim card and place it on the table, either in a location or by itself. Play one card from your hand, following the directions: weapons to kill victims to gain points, locations for future victims to gather for mass murder, surprises (bonus or penalty points) face down under victims, or events (which might result in a shootout between the players). Draw from the second deck until you have five cards.

I have no idea how this game plays. And I don't care. Any game with zombies, aliens, monsters, dungeon crawls turns me off.

It seems that most of the games I like have titles that are geography-based: Macao, Saint Petersburg, Carcassonne, Glory to Rome, and on and on. In fact, I had a t-shirt made with a map of Europe and the names of various games placed appropriately on the map.

I don't know why, but this as well it's sister 1989: Dawn of Freedom simply do not interest me. Maybe because they only play 2P and tend to be long, but more likely because real world geopolitics irritates the hell out of me, and I do not want to play games which remind me of that, no matter how good it is!

This game has the kind of game play I like, but I'm not a big fan of zombies. If they made a game like this with an aliens theme or something like that, I would buy it in a second. I would have bought this one if it didn't have such a gross looking zombie right on the front.

I don't want to build nuclear weapons. I don't want to launch nuclear weapons, not even to test them on thousands of 'volunteers' (army members, south sea natives).
And i don't want to bomb nuclear weapon facilities, not even with conventional weapons, which could result in contaminating large areas, making them uninhabitable, and resulting in slow dead for many people.

Many friends feel they are so close to the conflict (as the game depict a period of violence in my country) to comfortably play this.

Not me. I like this one.

I'm posting this as this is the one game I've had real difficulty getting to the table because of the theme.

Each round, you predict the waves and surf them, then pay tribute to the witch prior to declaring your love for the prince. The most successful player wins the prince's heart.

No idea why my friends had a problem with this.

Kings, aristocrats, and noblemen slapped on a game box are a snooze-a-rama in my book. Knights--no problem. Explorers--no problem. Farmers--no problem. And for some reason, Renaissance princes are no problem either. That's not to say I don't have a game or two that falls into the medieval kings, queens, kingdoms theme but I tend to like the game despite the theme. I tend not to investigate too deeply games with this theme nowadays.

I personally love this game (the gameplay and mechanics are great), but I know many people who don't want to play it because of the theme. They find playing out the events immediately following 9/11, and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, to be distasteful.
