This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty but as always: add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid, and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift-store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad™, the Tape Monkeys™, and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
The Weekly Thrift List Wayback Machine The Grand Vizier is maintaining a list of all the weekly thrift lists through time, and will be adding stats and interesting tidbits for each week. Your Thrift Store Bargain Finds Through Time
Our GeekGuild The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Do mind the stacks of prized games. Don't mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. $2 at Goodwill, I'd never seen this before so I thought there might be some demand for it... after this and two editions of Harry Potter Scene It last week I probably need a smartphone. Shrink removed but unpunched and unopened inside.
I went back to the estate sale to pick this up since it would now cost $5 instead of $10 for a very nice unpunched game. The lady recognized me from the day before buying the other games and suggested that I take both games on the shelf for $6. So for $3 I got this one in like new condition plus..
3rd Edition – complete but it looks like the box was partially crushed by a heavier game of some sort. Either way, still a good score I think. I have a 4th edition w/ the 5-6 expansion but I must say, I think I really like the artwork of this edition (THOUGH in game it might not be as awesome).
Not too sure what to do with this -- maybe sell it to a friend for cheap (delivery charge!) – as he wouldn’t just take it for free…
Very good, lightly played (if played) condition…Kayakeeples! Good ratings here. Rules very straightforward, seems like it can get very cut-throat (maybe if you add another rule or two to make it even more adult-friendly)
NIS WWF OMG! Didn’t realize these sold so cheap ($20 new) considering the W&W original sells for 35 new. Maybe can find a trade with someone…otherwise I will just have both the original and family versions. Might not be a bad thing for some people that aren’t into the gambling aspect of the original
Picked this up in the Elizabethtown hospice shoppe for $5. Game's complete and in good condition - only issue is that the white bishop has a broken base (which could be easily glued). Complete and the box only has normal shelf wear. Probably going to be traded, but couldn't pass up an Avalon Hill game.
I was just about to resign myself to not getting any finds today. Then somehow this did one of those harry potter order of the phoenix moves...had already browsed the same shelf twice and suddenly this appeared right before I was about to give up.
$1 and everything's there, including the plastic insert
Finding anything other than puzzles and a High School Musical trivia game in charity shops down here is pretty much miraculous.
So when I saw the pictured version of Cathedral in my local Cancer Research shop I got a bit over-excited.
All complete with all the dark and light plasticy buildings and the white cathedral. Rules in there too. Box decent apart from the sticker the schoolkid who donated it put on there to give his name and age (a school must have had some kind of donation project or something).
Sometimes I have time to browse, other times it has to be a quick-strike. I had about 10 minutes to enter Savers (since I was driving RIGHT past it), find something I might like, buy it, then pick up my daughter. Some thrifters might find this task too daunting, but not the Closet Thrifter!
Granted, most rushed trips like this usually end up with nothing. I am reluctant to thrift incomplete games so in-store inventory usually takes too much time. Perusing the shelves revealed little more than Trivial Pursuits, Sorry!, and Yahtzee variants.
Bottom shelf was a Disney Labyrinth (version shown). I think my niece would love to play this when she visits! But you might ask "are all the pieces present?" One quick peak reveals that this one is unpunched and in great shape! For $3.99 it came home with me.
I have not seen this one on the lists before, I would imagine American kids would love this version. Anyone else seen it?
And by the way, I picked up my daughter with a minute to spare!
$2.99 at Goodwill in Xenia, OH. Everything is bagged and looks to be complete.
Passed up a GDW Traveller RPG set at Valley Thrift in Fairfield, OH because the tape monkeys went insane with it and had 2 inches of tape around it and a bundled Pooh Memory game. Was only $0.69, but those older boxes do not do well with heavy duty packing tape...
