A lot of these lists seem to be negative, so I thought I'd highlight games that I was pleasantly surprised by. So if you ever had a game you avoided, either because of reputation or were just unenthusiastic about the theme/mechanic, but actually enjoyed it once you played, post it here!

Something about this box and the title just made it seem so lifeless and generic. It was part of the host's standard selection but I never even gave it a second look. When it finally came to the table, I rather enjoyed its deck-building/action selection hybrid, and will gladly play it whenever it comes out.

It was probably just the D&D theme that gave me a totally wrong impression of this game at first, so much so that I didn't bother looking up that it was a fun little worker-placement game with nary a d20 in sight.

I liked Elder Sign enough, but thought the full Arkham Horror experience would be too drawn out, complicated, and take forever for the same basic payoff. But after finally playing it, I just love the larger scope and it never felt too fiddly or overwhelming at all. I must've failed a meta sanity roll because now I'm hooked on Arkham.

Pictures of the board for this game looked so dull I didn't even bother reading how this game played. Then at a TABScon event, a used copy was available on the bring-and-buy table and a friend recommended it to me. It wasn't much of a risk at the price and it turned out to be surprisingly addictive for my husband and I.

I got this mainly due to the price as well as the candy camels. Howver, the tight gameplay surprisingly is quite deep and wih the varied setup and placement of caravan leaders you have to adjust on the fly in every game. It also scales very well.

This card game has been a hit with the kids lately. I hadn't realized how well their many games of Go Fish and Old Maid prepared them for this basic trading game. The big step for them was learning to keep the cards in order and play from the same end of their hand, but once this was accomplished our games have been fast and competitive. They can be unpredictably generous with each other in trading (to clean out their own hands), but I find this to actually make the game more fun.

After reading a lot of reviews, I was concerned that this would be too light and fluffy for our group. It may be light, but it is great fun and has enough tactical play to keep everyone on their toes! Doesn't hurt that it's one of the most beautifully produced games out there!

I really didn't expect to like this one. I saw it as just another worker placement, Roman themed game. But it caught me by surprise. There are a lot of moving parts here, and it's just unique enough that I found myself wanting to play it again and delve into the various strategies.

The past 2 years haven't been the best for discovering (for me) new games. They mostly seem like either "chrome over substance" or "too cute by half". So when something like Trajan comes along, it's refreshing.

Originally, I did indeed purchase this game to be a nice, medium-light strategy game for school nights with my wife and two teenagers. While it has been on the shelf a bit lately, when we first got it, it was extremely well liked by all and seemed to be the perfect game for what I was looking for. It definately exceeded expectations.

My roommate owned this one and wanted to play it with me knowing I'm a fan of games. It looked like a Monopoly clone, and I went in expecting the worst. Lo and behold, the game was actually quite a lot of fun. Sure, it's a roll and move that is low in (but not devoid of) strategic content, but it was actually a lot of fun. The properties have a simplified rent system where the rent is higher if more properties in a row are owned, and instead of paying rent, one can buy the chain of connected properties for something like 5 times the rent (this is not a negotiation). The chains to grow as the game continues, causing rents to grow and causing the game to end in a reasonable length of time. In addition, the marriage mechanic spices up the game with a bit of humor and luck. Way more fun than the title and design would suggest.

When this game first released, I wasn't the least bit interested. Oh, joy, yet another city/village/castle building Euro. The cover art didn't interest me and the title told me nothing. Obviously I didn't dig very deep.

I'm a curious fellow even when I have pre-established opinions (which is most of the time) so when the game showed up at my game night I peeked into the gameplay and asked players what they thought. Reviews were mixed, only one in four was impressed, but what caught my attention was that someone pointed out you could kill your villagers!

I can't explain why I think this idea is so awesome, but it is so awesome! laugh I went out of my way to make sure I got in a play asap and bought the game immediately after. I love this game. It's got moxy!

I acquired this OOP card game after reading some rather positive reviews on BGG. For a mass market game, not to mention a card game version of an less than strategic mass market family game - there are not only a lot of strategic decisions, there are a lot of real-life decisions. It actually manages to incorporate some pretty valuable life lessons for kids in its play.

While walking that thin edge between being educational and preachy it manages to stay well on the side of entertaining and at least marginally strategic game-play.

In a nutshell, the game deck is composed of "career", "early life" and "later life" card piles. Players initially decide to attend College (delays their career and accomplishments by three turns but opens up a greater variety of career fields) or to dive right in to the work force.

Each career has a "time" and "money" value. Some careers give you lots of money but little time, others the reverse. Players use these values each turn to purchase accomplishments. Accomplishments can increase your abilities (exercise), change your life (children) or simply increase your final score (new house). Each turn the player fills their hand back up to the five card maximum. Players can draw from either the early or later life piles at whim. Early cards have smaller use costs and equivalently smaller final score values. After the fourth letter card completing the word "LIFE" is drawn, the game is immediately over.

It's kind of a nice metaphor, life ends suddenly and what do you have when it's over? In the game, having children, sending them to school and teaching grandkids can count for as much as a new home or climbing Mt. Everest.

For me, it was TransAmerica. The box art just screams "BOOORING!!!" to me, and I had no interest in playing it at all.

But a friend urged me to play it, telling me that it was a short game. So I figured I'd try it, consoling myself with the knowledge that if I didn't like it it would be over soon.

However, I had a blast playing it. I ended up getting last place, but I still had loads of fun.

I bought this on clearance, and when I received it and looked at the cover up close I immediately regretted my purchase. "Oh, why did I ever buy this?", I lamented.

It looks like a "Men vs. Women"-type game, one that's trying to use stereotypical differences between men and women as its main selling point (kind of like "Battle of the Sexes").

Once we tried it out, it was surprising that this wasn't a "men vs. women" game at all... In fact, it was a bit like Scattergories, but with a different scoring system.

It's a pleasant game that uses the difference between the sexes only as topic material. (In theory, you could use any topic you wanted.)

When I first saw this game (as "Pinguinas," I think) I was excited to see a game about penguins that seemed simple and lighthearted. However, the more I read about it on this site, the more I was wondering if this was a game geared more towards children, and that adults wouldn't really be entertained by it (unless they were playing with children).

When the "Hey, That's My Fish!" reprint came out, Dave Jones (from timewellspent.org ) told me about it, saying that it was a fine little game. On his recommendation I decided to buy it, but at first I was apprehensive to try it out, for fear that I wouldn't like it.

But once I tried it, I realized my fear wasn't well founded; it was a great game! I plays quickly and is all strategy, without being TOO strategic (although people who suffer from Analysis Paralysis might disagree).

It quickly became one of my favorite games.

Having first seen this in the mid-80s, I was initially interested in the ancient Greek theme, but was told that the game had nothing to do with ancient Greeks. Basically, the ancient Greek theme was just pasted onto a game that was more-or-less a five-in-a-row tic-tac-toe (or "Noughts and Crosses") game.

So I grew up being cynical about the game, thinking that it's just glorified tic-tac-toe with faux-ancient artwork.

Fast-forward over twenty years, and I see an old copy at a thrift shop for three dollars. After mulling it over, I decide "Why not?" and buy it, thinking that at least I'd get some nice glass stones if it ended up that I didn't like the game.

So I brought it to the usual Denver Games' game night, and played a game with Ron. It was a quick game and, much to my surprise, I quite enjoyed it. In fact, my first game was immortalized as entry number 13 in this geeklist:

Denver Games Session Report (October 2, 2012)

Pente being one of my favorite games, these days I never miss a chance to play it.

For me it's Carc.

I'd played Arc of the Covenant (or tried to) and New World and neither did anything for me. My brother in law got this for Christmas a year ago and i kept telling him i need to play it with him because i just don't understand how THIS game got it's 7 rating. Finally this year we played it and I was shocked at how great a game it was. he had the big box edition so we ended up playing for 3 hours and adding a new expansion in with every game.

I was not expecting to enjoy this game at all and now, while im not beating his door down to play it again, i'd be happy to spend another few hours playing it.

This was on my Wish List, but apart from liking dice games, I wasn't sure why. Also, recent indie purchases have left me a little underwhelmed. I added this to a recent purchase as filler to get free shipping.

Got it, read the rules and thought, "Hey, this seems pretty simple to teach and like it might be fun."

Amazingly, I got it to the table the next day. My daughter and I had a blast with it*. We both decided it was way more fun than we had expected and are looking forward to playing again.

*This despite the fact that I had a very early lucky god dice roll that took out her hero in one turn.
