This past Saturday night was my girlfriend's birthday party. We decided that having a day of gaming as a party would be the best idea because games are always fun. Saturday was also Australia Day, which we hung a banner for because one of our friends is Australian.

I built a gaming trophy to help make the day of games even more enjoyable. We had a meta-game going on while we played our games. Everyone received a point for each player they beat and lost a point for each player who beat them. I have to thank my Australian friend for this system. It was successful.

Here is what everyone was gaming for:

(I built this in a woodshop where I work.)

Edited: Here is a list of the participants of this day of gaming:

Myself
My gf
N. (Australian friend, traveled from NYC)
A. (traveled from NYC)
H. (same)
C. (friend from Westchester)
G. (friend from my home town)
M.A. (gf's family friend)
M.B. (gf's brother)
M.B.gf (gf's brother's gf)

Confused yet?!

Our first game of the day, after eating delicious deli sandwiches from the Italian deli in my town, was Arkadia. I bought this on a whim from someone's auction on the Geek and I am happy with it. It has a Tetris feel to it because of the different shapes of the tiles. The game combines Tetris with collecting seals from completing buildings that surround a castle. The castle has some cool 3d pieces as well as dictates how much each seal is worth at any given time.

Despite my friend's attempt to collect many red seals at the end of the game, I squeaked out a win.

(I have a couple of pictures of us playing but I am unsure how to upload them to this list item. I will edit this list as I learn more about Geeklists.)

The second game of the day was Ticket to Ride, a favorite for us. The 5-player Europe map can be nerve-wracking because the possibility of failing a ticket grows exponentially. My girlfriend was able to succeed in grabbing the longest route as she usually does. She does well with visual games because she was an art major in college.

Our Australian friend ended up winning this one. I got creamed especially after my friend G. ruined my 20 point ticket within the final 3 turns.

This game is pure fun. It becomes tense as you flip cards waiting to see if you can remember each other player's animal sound. A lot of goofy sounds, a lot of laughter.

Our friend A. won this.

You would think this entire list would follow what place my girlfriend finished in each game, but I can only remember who won each game.

Continuing with the "lite" games, this one has been a favorite since we were introduced to it by the friend from down-under (henceforth identified as N.). This game seems ridiculous and moronic, but it is amazingly vicious as you try to keep your penguins from being taken out of the game. We have a penguin death sound as each color gets killed.

This game was a blowout. N. won with handily while the rest of us did so poorly (you collect little silver and gold coins for every penguin card you have leftover at the end of the round--bad).

For our fifth game we played one of my favorites. I loaded it up with expansions. I think next time I will play with two less expansions than we did. I love the game, but it went long and more people showed up for the party (gf's brother and such).

Here are the expansions: Inns and Cathedrals, Traders and Builders, Abbey and Mayor (minus the barn), The Flyer (awesome), The Ferries and The Phantoms.

We always play with the Phantoms because they only add meeples, but I will make the Flyer a regular to our games. I enjoyed what the Flyer brought to the game.

Neither me nor my gf did well in this. N. won again. He demolished the table. Only A. was able to give him a real challenge. Next time less expansions to shorten the game.

While we played Carcassonne, my gf's brother, his gf and her family friend showed up. We set them up with Carnival while we finished Carc. I warned them of the problems with the rulebook (Midway = play area). I believe M.A. (the family friend) won this one.

Our party grew from 5 people to 8 so we decided to break out some of the party games to accomodate. I received Gotcha! for my birthday, and while I was skeptical about the game, it was fun and would work excellently as a drinking game (don't worry, we had plenty of beers during the game). The game is about creating rules for all players, specific players, and individual players. If any player breaks one of the rules, then the offending player moves back one space while the player who caught the rule-breaker moves up two spaces. The player who reaches the end wins. N. won the game with my gf's brother (M.B.) getting 2nd place.

We continued with the party games to keep everyone involved (also I knew some more people would be showing up), so N. broke out Cards Against. I had never played this before and I dislike Apples to Apples (boring). This game is hilariously awesome. I appreciate its blatant offensiveness. I aimed to be as offensive as possible, but just when you think yours is the funniest response, there is always one that topples yours. We didn't actually keep score for this one.

To finish up the night we played a team version of Dixit. We had ten people at this point in the party so we had to team up because this game only supports six. My gf and I were playing quite well until the very end when we got tripped up which card represented the correct "flora." We finished 2nd while N. & my friend C. finished first.

At this point in the night our friends from the city (NYC) had to leave to catch trains, so thus the birthday game night ended with N. being crowned the first Board Game Trophy winner. I need to add his name to the Meeple on the trophy. I painted it with chalkboard paint, so the trophy can be used again and again.

I hope you enjoyed my first Geeklist that celebrates a fun day of gaming for my gf's birthday.
