Attendance for this game day was down a bit from last month (13 vs 20) – perhaps weather had something to do with it. The roads were not the best in the morning, especially for folks traveling long distances. In fact we really didn't start gaming until 9:30 – though sometimes it takes that long to decide on games.

It was also my first game day as keymaster, though Mark showed up early to shovel (but there was a men's group at the church so there was little shoveling to do.

Today;s theme was “games with money”. Coins or money had to be a component of the game. Sponsored by Brian N “Segundo”. Prizes were rewarded for people who did best in games that fit the theme.

This was one of our monthly game days. We also have a game night most weeks. You are invited to both. Our full schedule is available here: http://www.boardgames.meetup.com/495

As always with my game day lists, games played may not be in order.

Manifest Destiny

The first game to get started, but far from the first game to finish – it took 5 or 6 hours. This game has been played before, but does not get out much so there were several rule questions – it doesn';t help that the rules are not always the best / clearest. I heard several phrases like “no, 8.423 says I can trade before selling”. Definitely money in this game.

Curt tried to read the rules earlier but couldn't grok them, so I taught everyone. We did play with Curt's fantastically painted set (my painted gears – pictured are plain by comparison). For the second game in a row I was on spot shy of the monument building location. Luckily I had a worker on the “pay one corn and do any non Chichen Itza action” so I could build a monument (3 points per crystal skull – 24 points) that way. Lee rocked the temples. Brian N says that corn (used like currency in this game) doesn't count.

Lee 74.25
Curt 59.5

Nate got this recently and loaned to to Mike to learn / teach / try out – first play for everyone. My quick check of the description shows that money is involved.

Bill and I started a game of this, but we abandoned it when Curt and Lee showed up.
The comments say that this was Brian N's 735th play.

Not a game day without this being played. First play for Chris, who got very little help. I was (and am) fairly happy with my score, but it looks worse in context:

Chris 63 (got the perfect guilds, and prefect military)
Barb 60 (almost forgot to score her wonder “copy a guild”)
Brian N 57 (48 in science)
Kevin 53 (wins tiebreaker)
Brian 53
Lee 37

Chris taught this game to all of us. Was reasonably fun (I had two AWESOME card plays), but not really my type of game. I tried for a 3 way victory, but I didn't have a good attack card and none of my allies did either. Curt then won on the next move.

Kevin's Royal Favor

Second play with the new expansion. Lee took and early lead but I used all 3 of my messengers to get initiative one round and never lost it. Not once, not twice, but three times I was denied a military victory point due to an alchemy card. (Kevin says there are 5 in the deck). I was pretty happy just to get to 10 (I think my previous high) but use of the Queen and Council chambers got me the win. Curt had to leave but Brian N and I filled in (his strategy – go the Queen until it is too expensive, then just send the messenger to get a gold, then buy a VP with council chambers.

Brian 15
Barb 14 (wins most land tiebreaker)
Curt 14 (Second play)
Lee 12 (First play)
Chris 8 (First play)
Kevin 7 (teaching)

Brian N's nick-name is “Segundo” (Spanish for second) He is the second Brian who shows up regularly, and is often second in games. So it was fitting to award a second place prize.

Kevin won a quarter which had an unfortunate accident – acid? Welded to a nickel by a train? Something like that.

And the winner of the day was Barb – who won a 1913 Nickel! Congrats!

Thanks for Brian N for sponsoring!
