In my quest to play all of the games on my shelf this year that do not have any plays on them, we broke out Finca to play this weekend.

Completely enjoyed this one, so much so that I think I may have a hard time getting my wife to let me try another game with the family any time soon. Three plays in 2 days of the same game do not normally happen around here but they happily did this weekend.! Seems to be an efficiency game and apparently I am not the most efficient person around here. Loved watching my daughter plot out her moves around the windmill, you could see her trying to plan one or two steps ahead.

Other than that, it was a weekend full of birthday parties and Super Bowl parties! Hope to get a bit more of a variety in next weekend.

We had 2 100 point matches on Friday! Fantastic. The Imperials cleanly won both matches. Better work on those Rebel builds and tactics!

A long 700+ KM drive up north to visit clients marks last week, so the games I played when I came back had to be fast and furious!

= 3 Plays

The weekend started well for me last Friday since I finally get an evening game in with my family with this, and it has been some time where at least 4 of us sat on a table to play! It turned out to be a memorable one as well as my daughter Sharlene went played the mad scientist using Rome A, and had an uncontested 71 points on science for a huge score of 88! This overcame my wife Betty’s balanced approach with Petra A (she had 5 categories in double figures, 85 points), my blue card focus with Alexandria B (71 points, 44 from blue), and Shawn’s military camp using Catan B (58 points, full military points). Shari’s score is the highest I have seen for both the science and overall points!

I also got in a couple of plays of this at the FLGS with the gals. The store was extremely busy and thus we had to play 2 3P games instead of 4P as someone had to man the store.

Game 1: I use Petra A and go Science heavy, getting 70 points (31 science) for the win! Julie used Giza B for 63 pts(20 from her Wonder), while Janine had Alexandria A for 43 pts. (16 from Blue).

Game 2: This time Julie manned the store while Vangie played, and we reassigned the wonders and some cards. I used Rome A and got 69 pts (22 from Blue), Janine had 61 with Petra A (17 from the Wonder), and Vangie had Babylon A and 53 pts (38 from Science), and I win again!

= 3 Plays (NEW)

My recently purchased 2nd hand copy was first played with the gals much earlier in the week (Monday) right before my trip. Janine and Vangie tagged team while we had a 3 round game, and the quirky scoring system really showed how wild the score can swing, as round 1 had the gals score 45 versus my 30+, then round 2 had them actually at NEGATIVE 26 to end up at 19, while I had a cumulative score of 84. However, Vangie made up for this in the last round by scoring 92 (!!!) points to my 26, thus their final score was 111 to my 110! Wow, a VERY close game!

The other 2 plays were during the weekend with my son Shawn. Saturday evening I teach this to him, and it becomes his instant favorite! The score breakdown was:

Shawn: 29+32+22 = 83
Me: 60+51+2 = 113 victory!

Shawn asks for another game of this the next day! This time we were neck to neck, and it was only the last round which decided the winner!

Shawn = 21+50+42 = 113
Me = 20+53+27 = 100
Shawn comebacks this time for the win!!!

= 2 Plays

I play 2 solo games of this Deckbuilding Dungeon Delver, both using the Wilderness side of the map.

Game 1: I use the Fighter avatar, and have the Human Blademage, the Dwarf Calignite, the Human Patternmage, and the Dwarf Skinshifter as my heroes. They go up against Orseg and his horde of Oozes, Trolls, and Dragons. The Skinshifter was literally a "monster" of a hero, as I could discard defeated monsters to make him morph into a more powerful hero, while the Patternmage's ability to rearrange the deck for future draws was invaluable in making me keep up the pressure on the monsters. In the end I finally defeat Orseg and only allowed a few of his minions to wreak havoc on the village, as I handily win 71 to 41!

Game 2: I again use the fighter avatar, and this game I my party was an all Human party composed of the thief Aird, the Blademage (again!), the Criochan fighter, and the Glamercast bard. This time the enemy was the Thunderstone Bearer Belac and his minions composed on Undead Hordes, Corrupted Royal Guard, as the nasty Giant Worms. My heroes were weaker than the previous game, so I had to level up myself (the fighter avatar) so that I could use 1 unequipped weapon as if it was equipped (in this case I wanted to use the powerful Livewood Bow). This proved to be critical as I bought as many Bows as I could afford, and together with the levelled up Criochan fighter and some Summon Storm spells managed to prevail, as my Avatar uses the Bow plus 2 spells to defeat Belac! I win with a score of 60-42!

= 1 Play

Got to play this Saturday morning with the 3 gals. The game was very competitive and quite tight! Julie really got a shipping engine going with the Harbor and 3 Corn plantations, and had a huge 47 points from shipping which made her run away from everyone else. The breakdown was: Julie 70 (Shipping 47 Bldg 12 Bonus 11), Me 56 (Bldg 23 Shipping 20 Bonus 13), Va 53 (Bldg 21 Shipping 32), Ja 41 (Bldg 20 Shipping 13 Bonus 8).

Finally learned this one! Two plays in a row, winning the second one. (I'm hoping it wasn't because my teacher let me win).

Also got in my first play of the Queen Games reprint of Locomotive Werks. Actually better than I was expecting. Not much theme or even mechanisms to the game, but a seriously interesting thinking game.

2 games of Thurn and Taxis. I own this game a long time already, but we play it rarely. Since we showed it to other people in our gaming group, Thurn and Taxis is played much often. They even preordered their own copy.

1 game of Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery. Finally we got this one on the table, blowing away some 2 year dust level. And guess what - the game was great and not so complicated, as we thought after the first try long time ago.

Virgin Queen, session II. I was a bit stoked to continue my Holy Protestant Empire role, especially as I was quite close to the 25 points. However, I was a bit sleepier than I should have been, and rules issues & rules questions (you'd think people would either listen to rules OR read them yourselves, wouldn't you?) drained a lot of the fun from this session for me ... it's hard to referee everybody else's turns and still be able to think about your own actions...

Dungeon Lords with Pluizebol - a nice game, in which I finally used a Plague. Second year was especially a fun combat, as I had 2 adventurers with 4 hit points & 2 with 5 hit points, and Pluizebol was in the meantime fighting against a 9-hit point dwarf paladin, an 8-hp fighter and 3 6-hp cleric, bard&thief. She killed them all (then again, she had 2 dragons and a golem in her lair)! Eventually I won with a couple of points, but that was mostly because I had the Violet Room, the Experienced Monster room and the Vampire/Ghost Room ... each of my monsters was worth 2 points at the end of the game!

Commands & Colors: Napoleonics with Pluizebol - we played 2 fan-made scenario's, Sorauren (she almost carried Cole's Ridge) and Castricum (which I couldn't take, but I killed just enough Frogs defending it to win).

The hobbit scenario 3 with Conlaen & Juleske - we tried the riddles another 5 times, but couldn't pierce the scenario. I think we'll have to make specific decks to get by this one. We then began the entire quest series once again, starting with Anduin - easy win. We needed that win for confidence, though

This game dominated game day with three 4 player team games where I was 0-3 and my partner was 1-2, yes I was that ineffectual....

Divinare wrapped up game day, looking forward to playing this little game again. I love the deduction and guess balance and the nudge the game sends making it difficult to use even perfect information if you have it.

During super bowl pre-game, halftime, power outage and some of the second half we ran through 6 games of Ascension.

I was at my family home for the weekend, and that means a few light games - I'm the only gamer in my family, but I can usually persuade them to play something.
First off, Central Market - two 3-player games. It was new to all except me, and I feel like I might finally be closing in on understanding how to play this decently.

Also, 3 plays of Skyline. Again, new to everyone but me. It's been a while since I last played, so this was pretty good.

One 3-player game of Tahiti concludes the weekend list. This was new to everyone including me, and I'm really happy I finally got to play it

LOTR: LCG saw three solo plays over the weekend (one victory, two losses). I had purchased the game in 2011, played through it once and decided it wasn't for me. Then over the past week I read several comments on BGG in various forums about how the game was an excellent solo experience. I decided to give it another go after viewing some of the great video walkthroughs now available. I'm intrigued and intend to explore the game further.

Also,

with my eldest daughter Sydney (9). She asked to play and is getting much better at the game. We tied the first game and she thumped me soundly in the second.

1x - Trajan

A very light weekend of gaming. I was trying to rally the troops at the last minute to see if I could finally get Battlestar Galactica to the table. There was interest but not availability. The best I could do was to convince my wife to play one game of Trajan before we watched the Super Bowl. She gave me a major beat down by racking up a boat load (literally with all of her cards) of bonuses to run away with it in the end. We've now played seven 2p games with myself having a slight 4-3 edge.

We're getting a better feel for manipulating the action wheel, but I feel there are still so many possible strategies to explore. I really went after loading up with Trajan tiles early before going after other things. It was a slow going and I finished strong but as I said... I got destroyed by my wife's card bonuses.

meeple Keep playing...

Two games played this weekend:

First a new one (to me):
The Scepter of Zavandor
Good game, but slightly long and seems to be missing a good mechanism for catching up with the leader. I won the game quite easily after being the only one that made sure I had a steady income of magic dust every turn. 93/60/45

Then a variant of an old classic:
Ticket to Ride: Märklin
Which I failed miserably. Decided to keep 3 tickets and not draw any more, and try to go for long routes. Couldn't get enough of one color to actually complete more than one 7-long, and no passenger cards appeared that could help me making passenger runs longer. My friend won with only a 20p margin over my wife because he failed a ticket when he mistook two cities and went for the wrong one. 183/163/144

Greatly enjoyed playing Fresco at the board game night at my FLGS. The game's blend of traditional Eurogame elements worked well, IMHO. Definitely want to play this one again. Was glad to get schooling in how to play, since I have a copy of this game sitting at home and I just needed to play it with someone.

That I played with an awesome group of people only made it better. Smart, sharp competitors. Tight game that came down to the final turn. And boy, did I get burned on that turn!

Our second game was Guildhall, a relatively simple set-collection card game, with a chaining mechanism on top, that just messed with my mind. For the life of me, I could not see how best to chain the cards, and the Weaver card in particular drove me nuts. I suspect I was just tired.

The Resistance: Avalon was the obligatory end-of-evening game. Always fun.

Well, no doubt about it, Kingdom Builder is the "hot" game around here. 4 plays this weekend. One of these was on Friday with Lindy. I also got in a game of Village, another great game, and one of Galaxy Trucker. After Stacey got home for the weekend I played a game of Rat Hot, a game of Ingenious and a game of crokinole with her.

Saturday
I taught Kingdom Builder to Stacey and we played twice. I walked her through as closely as I could since this game rewards experience more than some. Later I played Crows with Melissa who was also home for the weekend.

Sunday
I played Galaxy Trucker with Stacey and after Lindy got back in the evening, one game of Kingdom Builder with her.

11 games this weekend.

Our first game this weekend was The Palaces of Carrara. I had very briefly read about it before ordering it to fill out an online order and justify the shipping cost. The base game is simple and painfully dull. I had read that the expansion makes it much more enjoyable, so we broke the rule printed on the expansion envelope that came with the game and used it for our second play (*gasp!*). It was much more enjoyable with the expansion included as it added a few more options and strategies. Would never play the base game alone again.

It had been years since I last playedBetrayal at House on the Hill. We decided to play this with 2 players since she wanted to give it a try and we knew it'd be a while before we could get enough people together to play this one. We took 2 explorers each at the start. I wasn't too sure how well it would work but it had been so long since I last played that I just didn't care anymore. When my character became the traitor, I gave my non-traitor character to her and we carried on as though it was a 4-player game. Everything worked out surprisingly well; I think we'll actually have the occasional 2-player game from time-to-time now that we know it actually works.

Another game of The Rivals for Catan, this time with all of the decks from the base game. We both struggled to get things going from time-to-time as a Plague event would turn up at the worst possible time for both of us but I finally won my first game by 2 points!

We got around to playing a second game of Myrmes. There seems to be something missing from this game though; there doesn't seem to be enough time to really get anything going, it's a constant struggle just to survive. It also feels like there should be some other scoring mechanic at the end of the game. The game ends too abruptly: reach the 3rd winter, feed, game over; don't score anything, don't count anything, just simply done. Even when you win, it's not very satisfying. "We're done. Oh, that's it? I won? Um, hooray?"

Our last game for the weekend was Tzolk'in. I thought things were going pretty good. I got myself maxed out on the agriculture tech early, was pulling in a lot of corn, had a number of cubes, and was in good position to keep moving up the temple tracks by advancing the agriculture track. Unfortunately the first scoring round came around just a shave too early and shot jumped really far ahead thanks to her position on the temples. I climbed to the top of the yellow one, made some great advances while she miscounted and couldn't finish off her actions before the end of the game. I thought for sure I had her thanks to my superior position on the temples, but I still somehow managed to lose by 7 1/2 points. I swear I'm going to finally win a game of this one day!

Lots of gaming this weekend, as my friend had almost non-stop games at his house as detailed here. And don't listen to his nonbathing nonsense, I showered in between every game.

The first game I played that night was Torres. I was battling it out for first, and the final scoring card was 50 points for making a square with the pawns. I couldn't do it, and I hoped that staying in thew castles would overcome the other player that had to leave to make the square. It wasn't enough, and I lost by 11 points.

After that we played a game of Kingsburg, where I built a bunch of buildings for extra battle power. After that, I went for the large point buildings and in the end, I won by 2 points.

The final game of the night was Defenders of the Realm. The generals started moving early, but we kept the minions and taints down, and the rest pretty much fell into place easily for a win.

Saturday was more gaming at my friend's house, but it was also the monthly meetup game day, which I went to since some friends of ours there were getting married in a few weeks, and I had to get him his Lords of Vegas Sky Bridge /Building Boom promo wedding gift. I ended up playing a game of Lords of Vegas that I didn't do too well in. Then we played a game of Priests of Ra, which I got second place by 4 points. A few games of Star Fluxx were next, and then we tried out a game of Chicken Caesar before the library closed.

Then it was back to my friend's house for more gaming. I started with a 5 player game of Thunderstone Advance which started rough with weak heroes and strong monsters. It ended in a three way tie at 25 points, and I got last because I had no experience points. next up was a one on one game of Troyes that I ended up taking by 20 points. Final game was Homesteaders which I won by about 6 points.

Sunday started off with a game of Belfort which I destroyed everyone in. I got as many workers as quickly as possible that I could, which eventually got me more resources than others could keep up with, as well as most of the points for having majority elves and dwarves. I got only a single gnome in order to add another house on the board at the guardhouse, otherwise I used all my money to get extra workers and use guilds. The extra workers definitely pay off in this game.

Then we played a large losing game of Zombicide. It was a 9 tile map and we had to get 5 objectives, and got overwhelmed at the end. Then a couple games of Win Lose, or Banana went by, and we ended Superbowl Sunday with a game of Forbidden Island on legendary, using the Atoll of Decisions map set up and were pretty close to winning, but lost one of the treasure temples we needed.

All in all a great, but very tiring, weekend!

I played one game of Pandemic on the introductory setting of 4 epidemics. Two of us had previously played twice and barely won. The other player had never played before. We won this game as well, despite some VERY early draws of the epidemic cards. We had one instance of an outbreak triggering another outbreak. That was the low point for us, but we quickly recovered. Next time, we'll go with 5 epidemics.

After Pandemic, the 3 of us played 2 games of Dominion with all expansions. I won once, and my wife won once.

I got in a solo play of the Hellfire Pass scenario from Memoir '44: Mediterranean Theater. You can read the full session report here.

My son and I played many games of Chutes & Ladders, Milk & Cookies Game, Sorry!, and Tyrannosaurus Rex. We also played a 4-player game of Tiki Topple with a teddy bear and a dinosaur, with my son playing their cards as well.

Played Zooloretto 3x with the family. Good, fun game that doesn't take forever to set up, and the rules are pretty simple. Plays better with more people I think, we had 4 playing. I won 1x,wife 1x, younger son 1x.

Also played Biblios 2x and I won again, a rare event in my household.

Played the new Monopoly Deal Millionaire, and it might just be better than the original. Seems more balanced. I lost.

Played K2 solo and I played horribly. Still had fun.

Saturday

At Eastern Pennsylvania Gaming Society meeting and played

Eclipse - My first time playing. Five players. I liked it quite a bit despite coming in dead last. I was very unlucky in exploration and just couldn't get many resources as a result.

Ground Floor - My first play of this. Five Players. It was a very close game. I came in 4th place. I also enjoyed this quite a bit. My only gripe is it seemed to go on a little too long, but I'm chalking that up to first time playing for all five of us.

7 Wonders - Seven players. I won with a balanced strategy, scoring moderately well in all categories except the yellow cards, which was my only zero. I scored 13 points from my only guild which scored 1 point for each of my neighbors yellow cards.

Sunday

Skyline - Played 3 quick games with my wife and son. Great little filler. This is a filler in the truest sense of the word. Each game lasts 10 to 15 minutes. Definitely luck involved, but some interesting decisions nonetheless. It's fun to try and go for that big 36 point high rise.

Played a three player game of Glory to Rome. Less than 10 points seperated the top man from the bottom.

Some excellent games of Seasons. This is really growing on me.

Played this little 18xx on Saturday. Enjoyed it quite a bit, it's the first small 18xx I've played that's less about tracking building and more about financial trickery.

Unfortunately we played a few rules wrong regarding the trains, and had a much easier time because of it. Still enjoyed it and am looking forward to playing it again.

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game. Traveled to Springfield, MO to play in the Moonboy Classic. Two rounds of Melee Friday night using their experimental scoring rules allowed for some fun and interesting events. The real deal--Joust--was Saturday, though my results were a bit disappointing as I didn't make the cut. 7 games total.

Also managed to get in a game of Star Wars: The Card Game and a couple of games of Android: Netrunner while I was there.

Good Old Friday night gaming, my weekly game night.

Started off the evening with a quick game of Kingdom Builder with the Nomads expansion. The scoring cards were Lords, Families and Workers and we had the Capitol promo in play. Despite not getting many power tiles at all I managed to eek out a victory winning two board for the lords bonus and getting double points for the Capitol and Workers. Very close game.

Followed that up by showing my friends my new favorite Troyes. Their eyes glazed over when I described the rules but once we got going they REALLY enjoyed it. So interactive and neat with the dice mechanism and the board game fighting you, it has a story arc unlike most Euro games. My friend said it was his favorite of the Euro games I own and I was so excited I bought the expansion on the spot.

Then we played two quick games of Biblios. Loving how quick and clean this game is. It has become our favorite quick filler.

Finished out the night with an amazing game of Libertalia with 6 players. A little chaotic at that player count but we were laughing our butts off as one player kept getting his characters punched by the brute. Despite losing three of the six characters for the week this way he still eeked out a victory from a strong second round. If only my governor's daughter hadn't gotten punched in the last round I might have gotten the win arrrh. Love this game, anyone who says it doesn't make you feel like a pirate is crazy!

My first less than positive experience with this game. Played a five player game with four new players, and it really didn't go well. No chance I'll ever try to teach this to four people at the same time again.

Big gaming weekend. Also played:

War of the Ring (Second Edition) twice. Second time was a FP runaway as my SP opponent failed to allocate any dice to the hunt on turn one, and got no eyes on his roll. I declared the Fellowship in Lorien at the start of turn two, and the game was pretty much over from there.

Memoir '44. Not my favorite game, but managed to have fun, and eek out a win.

Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar. Tried an ignore the gods strategy and got trounced.

Lords of Waterdeep. Quick five player game.

Super Dungeon Explore. First time playing. A lot better than I expected, though the the setup time is just too long.
