SaltCON is a great regional convention held at Salt Lake City. It's been going on for five years now as a successor to the smaller convention A Gathering of Strangers. I've been wanting to attend for several years but schedule - school, work, and family engagements were always in the way. This year things finally lined up and I was able to go along with my son Chance. We only attended Saturday from 1:00 to 11:15. We had such a fun time that we are looking forward to more fun next year.

Here's a list of some of the games we played.

We sat down the demonstrator and another player for a swing at this beautiful gem. The game is incredibly produced and provides a fairly fun atmosphere to explore. Chance and I came away thinking it was a bit too much of a dice-fest but we both agreed its a dungeon crawl that we could play with my daughters and they would eat it up like cheese!

I didn't play the game but Chance did. He ended up enjoying it and finishing tied for first at the end of the game. Lost out on the tie-breaker but said it was fun.

I sat down with Luke Spoon who designed a CCG called Clash of Realms. I can't find it on the Geek. It was a fun little game, something between Magic and Warlord. It was a fun play and I pushed rather aggressively for the win. Good time.

I sat down the designer for a learning game of this little gem. It's a great area control game with a very nice mixture of scoring requirements. Loved the quick tension of the game and complimented Ryan on his design. I missed the Kickstarter campaign but told him that he can put me on whatever waiting list he has. I'll keep an eye out for this when it releases this summer.

I had answered a post from Michael Coe who was interested in having people to do blind plays of his game. Once Chance finished up the dinosaur game, I dragged him over and we worked through a production copy. This turned out to be a great little find. Quick, tense and close. We ended up coming back and pre-ordering this game with the Kickstarter bonuses as a nice convention bonus. Michael Coe showed off the great meeples that are included and we had a great time talking through this game. I'll be excited to see this in June.

We picked this from the Game Library and had a blast. I'd looked at this at Epic Games so setting it up was pretty straight forward. We played a pretty tight game when Chance was able to pick up Jean-Luc Picard and then scored the Enterprise-D. I wasn't able to keep up with him after that. He was thrilled and we both had a great time.

I had seen this and have friend who love Dominion. We sat down to play this and had Jason and Brett jump in to teach us the game. It was an interesting game. Chance and I thought of the game as an expanded base of Through the Desert. While a fun exercise, the incredible amount of variables seem to make it a bit too random for me to get excited about. Thanks Brett for teaching us the game. Congrats to Chance for kicking tail in it.

We waited quite a long time to play this. The Game Library had two copies and they were always checked out. We tried to jump into a demo several times but were a few minutes late every time. We finally caught it at the Library and brought a 'Players Wanted' sign. Dave, who I had sold two games to, and his uncle Terry jumped in to teach us how to play. We had a great time playing it with Terry running away with the win through several great quests. Chance and I walked away wanting to buy a copy but the game stop had sold out on Friday and then again on Saturday. We had to walk away without this gem in hand. We plan to change that.

This was our final game of the convention. We borrowed it from a player because the library didn't have a copy. Chance and I played it and ended up beating the Red Skull rather handedly. While it was fun, Chance and I both walked away thinking that the Star Trek Deckbuilding Game was a better play.
