I've been reflecting on the replayability of wargames (as this blog entry attests), and that got me wondering which wargames get played the most.

I probably won't get an answer to that, so instead I'll just ask which wargame you have played more often than any other.

GeekList rule: Add just one item--the wargame you've played more times than any other.

Then, if you would, say something about why you keep coming back to that game (if you still do).

I have to think back over a lot of years, since I got started before 1970. But I'd say I've played more SL (including its expansions) than any other wargame. I spent the year 1980 working my way through the dozen base-game scenarios, then I tackled the expansions during the next few years. When ASL came out in 1985, I switched to that and stuck with it until 1995--but I don't think I played as much ASL in all those years as I did SL (I played most or all of the Beyond Valor scenarios and all the Paratrooper scenarios, but only once or twice each).

Why SL? Well, it was the most exciting wargame I'd ever played, and I couldn't get enough of it for those first couple years. However, I no longer own SL or ASL. Nowadays I'm into Lock 'n Load instead, and so far I'm very happy with it.

I have played Twilight Struggle once and Stratego a handful of times. Also a few games here and there of Castle Risk in middle school.

This one, as of right now. I tend to bounce between games a lot, but for some reason my friend and I played this one back to back for a few weeks. Did this with a couple of friends, actually.

Looking forward to playing it more and making it through the other two sets. Also learning the full game right now.

I too played a lot of ASL in my late teens/early 20s - and probably still has that title due to the time/plays from them.

Now I am leaning towards stuff heavier on the fun factor - things like. Kids, jobs, activities and the realization that gaming should not = a lifestyle.

World at War: Eisenbach Gap or Liberty Roads

I do break ASL occasionally - and the nostalgia is definitely there.

many, many, many plays at home, conventions, online, even play be email (and yes, that took some time to complete).

(note that my recorded plays here started years after most of my plays)

Why play so much? Alot of replayability in this one. From single ship duels, to small squadron engagements, to starbase assaults. I've played all levels, but mostly played with official tournament cruisers and rules. That subset has enough variety to have me feeling only scratched the surface even after many score of plays.

This includes playing both the Starter Kit version and the full version. I still think it is the most rewarding tactical WWII system available. I would like to play some other games as often, but that has more to do with increasing my playing time instead of decreasing my playing of ASL.

I played the basic game 22 times since I bought it over a year ago. I've taught it to most of my gaming buddies to build up a good sized pool of potential players. Now I've acquired;

Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #1 – The Spanish Army
Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #2 – The Russian Army

so I've got more variability in armies and scenarios.

I expect to see this top my list of most played wargame for a very long time.

Update (March 18, 2014) - 39 plays of the base game
6 plays of the Russian expansion

I've also acquired Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #3 – The Austrian Army. Still loving this game and still at the top of my most played list.

No question here. One of a very few games that I played
very regularly. Add to that the huge number of playings involved
in trying to play out Federation & Empire (and before that
Federation Space), with every battle as a scenario; made a few
attempts at this.

Ran through three editions until I pretty much quit.

Rather than add yet another ASL entry, I'll go with Streets of Fire, an ASL module. I learned to play ASL with Streets of Fire, and to this day it remains my favorite – and most played – ASL module.

The big attraction of Streets of Fire was that it introduced the Deluxe mapboards, featuring giant hexes which allow you to play ASL without any need to stack any counters:

Probably Combat Commander but the OCS titles are rapidly catching up (sadly mainly solo) if I can count them collectively.

I've also played this with the greatest variety of opponents. Interesting seeing their different styles of play and reactions to it.

At this point, the total number of sessions of Empires in Arms that I've played is somewhat ahead of Cross of Iron, The Sword and the Flame, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, The Ironclads, 1776, and The Civil War, which are the other wargames that I've played a lot.

Given the large number of sessions in a single campaign of Empires in Arms, that doesn't mean a lot of completed campaigns. But EiA is the most addictive wargame that I've ever played. The game has a grand scope in terms of geography and time (1805 campaign covers 11 years in monthly turns!). The interaction of 7 players struggling against and together with each other, conducting a series of alliances and wars, creates a tense long term role playing dynamic. A campaign can create remarkable alternate history. The diplomatic mechanics are where the game shines. The land combat can also be pretty dramatic. The game is big enough to absorb the players.

Played this a lot 20 years ago. My brother was my opponent, and he always fielded the Soviets while I was NATO. Great game, as we had time then to play whole day battles.

It's sister game IDF (Israeli Defense Force) came later, and in many ways it is the better game since technology plays a lesser role.

While PANZER is one of the new hotness today, I recommend that those who own it try these 2 out, especially if they want to see infantry become more useful, as the infantry borne anti-tank weapons are better in these 2 games.

For me this is the game I have played the most. Plays in the hundreds at least, including participating in tournaments at Origins from 1987 until they petered out in the late 90s.

I mean who doesn't want to be a fighter pilot? Cram all that ego into a tiny little cockpit.

Grunts don't say stuff like:

"I'd rather be lucky than good"

"Better a MiG on my six than no MiG at all"

"No kill like a guns kill".

Now been superseded by Birds of Prey.
