There are many games I have played numerous times and somewhere down the road I realized I missed a fairly obvious rule.

This geeklist is for myself and other users to post rules that were missed in the hopes that when someone is learning the game for the first time they will not make the same mistakes that we did.

As simple as the rules are for this game there is one part we somehow missed even after many plays.

I always knew you can't build 2 cards with the same name/picture, but where we didn't always consider this is in the resource cards.

We played numerous games where we would build two resource cards with the same name/picture.

First couple games we played we forgot to remove buildings when switching to Town and City.

When you transition from Settlement to the Town phase, you remove buildings that have only Settlement listed on them. Also, when you transition from Town to City phase you remove all tiles that have Town listed on them.

We had so many building choices that players where getting overwhelmed causing AP.

The first time I played Runebound a couple of friends taught it to me. In Runebound, you resolve combat by rolling two D10s. Well, my friends taught, and we played, that you only roll ONE D10. It was an extremely tough game and everybody died often. The next time I played I used two D10s and it was much more fun.

Even though I played a few games online before teaching my gamer buddies, I missed crucial step in setup.

None of us started with 2 free worker ants. This made an already extremely tight game, brutal. Luckily we all started in the same place and everyone seemed to enjoy the game enough to play it the next week...with workers from the start.

We've played Thebes lots of times and until last weekend assumed that shovel cards are identical to Assistants (and wondered, why there are two sorts of them; plus books and also local knowledge guys). C'mon it's so obvious that shovel stands for more digging - even the symbols on cards are different.

If you're learning this game by reading the rules, you'll be fine. But if you're learning how to play from someone else who knows the game, there is something like a 107% chance that you will put money of some sort on Free Parking. You will spend the majority of your life believing that this is how the game is played. It ain't so. You park there. For free. That's it. That's why it's named Free Parking.

I remember the day I actually read the rules. I vividly remember thinking "Wow; how'd I miss that?" A pox upon those who perpetuate this travesty.

The first time I played with someone who was more experienced with the game than me, he taught me that you were supposed to establish player order after the first auction phase to balance out the random that was caused in the beginning. I love being the guy that owns all the games, but I'm not detail oriented enough to teach myself and have it 100% correct. I must have taught 10 people how to play incorrectly.

For the longest time, my group of friends and I started every game of Catan with the resources from BOTH of their starting locations. Once we figured out our error, the game gained both length and intensity. No longer could the perceptive player start the first turn building one road and one new settlement, and it also prevented the occasional "robbed before you take a turn" issue that occasionally popped up!

in the first play we missed the rule that you can only trade ONCE in your turn: then players who were up in the trading track could have almost an infinte resource bank!

Two screw-ups.

I have read the rule book a few times during play but so often I forget that the starting player begins with 1 worker, second player receives 2, third 3 and fourth 4. I played recently and handed two to everyone because in my mind that made perfect sense.

Also, until recently I thought that you could only build 1 of each type of building tile on your entire estate rather than in the confines of your colored city area. I always thought the buildings were less useful and now I know why.

I played this one at BGGcon with all of the correct rules, but when it arrived on my doorstep a few months later, I only skimmed the rules because I thought I remembered everything..

Rules we missed due to my laziness:

- Players place depots in reverse player order.

- The first Depot on a track costs $4. The 2nd (or later) costs $7.

For the first rule, we placed in player order....which is just silly. In most games with this type of setup, players place in reverse order. Why would this be any different? Unsurprisingly, I felt that 1st player had a significant advantage (although I blamed some other areas)...

For the 2nd rule, we played that a player's first depot costs $4, whereas any other depots placed after that costs $7. This drastically changed the game, and made depots much more difficult to build. It also made certain character bonuses very strong. Our first game, I had a character that could build some extra track for cheap, and then that character could plop down a depot for free! Seemed liked an overly awesome bonus...

I only just realized that when you buy something you also gain it. I thought you only gained a card when an effect specifically used that verb.
