Wargames cover just about every type of conflict from the beginning of human history. On your kitchen table you can recreate everything from Gettysburg to Normandy, Agincourt to Austerlitz. One of the most popular eras is of course WWII and one of the most popular WWII games is the squad level wargame.

We live in a golden age of of both boargdaming in general and wargaming. A lot of people are discovering boargdames and a lot of those people migrate over to wargaming. Inevitably a number of these folks ask this question. "I want to find a squad level wargame. Which one should I get?"

There is no easy answer for this because there are a number of really good squad level WWII games and systems out there. One size does not fit all. Recently there have been two threads about the differences between ASL and Combat Commander and why folks like one and dislike the other. So you can't just tell someone pick up a copy of (insert name here) because even though it's a great system and fits the period and level they're looking for it still might not be a good fit for them.

That's where this geeklist comes in. I want to make a nice list of WWII squad level games with people opinions on them. What they like and what they don't like. Consider it a one stop shopping place for someone looking for a WWII squad level game.

Feel free to add games to the list. We're going to limit this to infantry squad level although we can fudge it a little bit towards platoon level if it's in that grey area. Also we're talking infantry combat so let's avoid games that are heavy on the tanks like Fighting Formations: Grossdeutschland Motorized Infantry Division. A tank here and there is ok but remember we're looking for infantry games not armor.

35 years on and people still play this classic. Most squad level games can trace their lineage to this. The game itself has been out of print for years but was published for two decades by Avalon Hill so copies can still be had...for a price. I think folks have much more affordable options than this these days but it is an option if someone really wants to go with it.

There are people who play Advanced Squad Leader and it only. There are clubs where that's all that is played. ASL was the next generation after squad leader being published by Avalon Hill in 1985 and is still going as strong today. When Avalon Hill went under the company MMP was created to keep ASL going.

It's really only in the last 7 or 8 years that we've seen other systems finally rise up and give players options in terms of a squad level system. Individual games have always been around but a long time ASL was it in terms of an ongoing system.

Not a big fan of ASL myself.

My squad level system of choice. One big difference between ASL and Combat Commander is in CC you have random events that enter the game through the card system. This can be everything from a fire breaks out, a sniper or one of your people becomes a battlefield hero. This is a feature that people love or not. If you don't like the randomness ASL might be the better choice.

I like the random events myself because historically battles were chaos with commanders adapting to the unexpected. Men didn't always do exactly what you wanted. Sometimes you discover things you didn't expect. That's in Combat Commander. It also has perhaps the best random scenario generator I have ever seen.

The game that launched Lock 'N Load Publishing. They produce a lot more than just this (some really good games) but Lock 'n Load pretty much is what keeps the lights on at the company I suspect. Never played it myself but I know LnL folks love the system.

A game that hasn't seen the light of day since Avalon Hill turned turtle. It's become a grail game for many wargamers. The game features two things. Fantastic game play and the worst written rulebook in the history of civilized man. I once went to look up a rule and instead of telling me what I wanted to know it just gave me three other places to look "Please see 6.531, 7.32 and 10.42".

That is how good this game is. Rulebook from hell and people still loved it.

In theory it is seeing a reprint through Valley Games but may be involved in a legal quagmire that I won't go into here.

Designed by Courtney Allen, the same gentleman who created Up Front. It's worth picking up if you find a good copy for a good price. I personally would love to see this game republished. Each counter on the map represents 12 men (or at least that's what the rules say) of the 2nd Parachute Division under Col. John Frost who held Arnhem Bridge for 5 days before being overrun.

I think this is the Pacific version of Iron Cross.

That bayonet art at the bottom of the cover looks awfully familiar. Might it be...

Artwork for both games is by the legendary Rodger MacGowan with 20 years being between the two games.

Squad level for the solo WWII wargamer. I had this back in the 80s and it was a unique game, especially for it's era. I played it I think 3 or 4 times and the rules were pretty steep as I recall.

Another John Butterfield design (designer of Ambush, D-Day at Omaha Beach, RAF, Hell's Highway, Freedom in the Galaxy, etc.), but this one for two players.

The system revolves around the notion that the soldiers in combat have differing levels of initiative (self-motivation, courage - whatever you want to call it), and the impulse system has an integrated competition for the next move, at any time, based on those initiative ratings, and how hard you're willing to "push" your men. To outbid to get the next move, you "push" one of your men. That may allow you to move that soldier, but his initiative will be lowered, as a result. It will take time to get him to summon enough courage to move again.

Couple with hidden victory objectives for one side or the other, and a lot of available scennarios, and you have a great game. You get those moments in combat when you're men are pinned down and won't move forward, but without the host of random events or a hand of uncooperative cards.

I think what hurt this game the most was the bad cover art, and the limited availability.

Valor & Victory is a great design by Barry Doyle. It has a lot of variety without a lot of complexity, it covers Europe and the Pacific, and it is free (PnP). It is reminiscent of the Microgames Stalin's Tanks and Rommel's Panzers.

Valor & Victory has made a large number of resources available to players- numerous maps, extra units, and scenarios. Even so, it is not overly complex, and as I understand it that is intentional by the designer.

Well worth the time it takes to learn to play, and if you don't like the PnP aspects there are resources available to get it made for you.

The Advanced Tobruk System from Critical Hit. This particular one, about the fight for the causeway and La Fiere bridge across the Merderet River.

The aspect of this game that I enjoy is that both players are heavily involved in each turn. I mean this in the sense that one player move/fires a squad or team than the other player does the same. It gives a very back and forth feel and forces players to change plans even mid-turn to accomplish their goals.

Fantastic squad level solo game.

Honestly the best solo game of the type I have ever played and surely this is due to the combined focus on a single raid and the high production quality that Avalon Hill had at this time, the peak of their business (IMO).
