Jump in a Plane, Train or a Carain...just get to Albury in 20-Thirtain!

Yikes March again...this list is 2 weeks late...sorry.

BorderCon is back yet again and we couldn't be happier about that.

BorderCon is not about vendors, competitions or fancy stuff. It's simply a chance for you to get away and play games over 3-4 days and met old friends and make new ones.

We are lucky enough to attract some of the most social and fun gamers from around the country each year and they are more than happy to help new gamers to the hobby learn a few new titles.

You can play at your own pace and come and go as you please. Gamers bring somewhere between 100-200 titles of their own so there is everything you could want from old grails to the latest and greatest. We seem to play all style to with tables for the Euro fans, the thematic junkies and the social and dexterity crews. We need some more wargamers though so why don't you bring a little crew along.

So what are you waiting for. Get your accommodation booked and let us know you are coming. We can't wait to see you again...whether it be for the first time or the 6th year in a row!

What and When is BorderCon?

BorderCon is a Gaming Con that runs over the 4 days of the Queen's Birthday in June, in a place called Albury.

Luckily for us we are on the NSW/VIC border so we are an easy to reach location for a fair portion of the country.

As the header says...we don't want any stress at BorderCon. There are no crazy time slots to squeeze games. You can play hard all day long or you can chill, have a chat at the bar with someone you've met on the Geek but never seen in person before. The Crokinole Board is always open to help fill time in between arranged games with another group or just to give the brain matter a bit of a rest.

If you book into the Hume Inn then your room is only 30 metres away should you need a rest.

We don't have dedicated tourneys but you are always welcome to organise a little bit of crazy. In the past we have had gamers organise a Power Grid Fest and play a game via the Internet with a mate in South Africa!

In short BorderCon is anything you want it to be. We just provide the space and a chance to get away for the weekend.

Our venue at the Hume Inn has room for around 100 gamers, a bar will take care of your nibbly and thirst needs.

Dates - This year the event runs from Friday the 7th of June to Monday the 10th of June.

Times - Doors open at 4pm on the Friday afternoon and close around 2pm on the Monday. Both days of the weekend start at around 9am and we close some time after midnight when we run out of Crokinole discs to keep our eyes open.

Who Runs BorderCon?

Well...As per the above banner, BorderCon used to be run by Border Games Albury Wodonga, the local gaming club. But after 10 years we decided it was time the club disbanded.

So BorderCon is now run by a band of local gamers who are game lovers just like you.

Entry - This year there will be a $10 entry fee per person (no cost for children). This covers the whole weekend and the funds raised will go towards some new tables as a few of our old ones are looking a little worse for wear.

What is the Venue?

We have been hosted for years now by the Hume Inn in Albury. The Hume Inn is run by Mark and his wife Tiani. They were new owners last year but very accommodating and Mark even enjoyed a few games himself after dark. We have met with Mark again this year and he is as keen as ever to have us again.

So it appears that we will have all the usual things in place for us and he is even happy to book gamers into the rooms closer to the function room to shorten the walk to bed in the wee small hours. thumbsup

BorderCon takes place in the function room, which means that gamers staying at the hotel can game till they drop and then drag themselves the 20-30 metres required to reach their room. Sweeeeet!

More details in the next entry for the Hume Inn.

The Hume Inn is not the Ritz...but Mark is working on it!!!

It has supported us since the first days of the Australian Games Expo (must be close to 12 years ago now?!) and as such it does feel like our own Geek space.

It comfortably holds 100 so the inside gaming is pretty comfortable.

Please Read

There are only 8 rooms left and to this point the Hotel is completely booked by Gamers (bravo to all of you with a standing booking from 2012).

We really want to fill it this year with Gamers because breakfast will need to be held in the Function Room this year as an Italian Restaurant is being built and will occupy the kitchen downstairs.

If we can have gamers only it just makes things easier for us.

Mark will hold off any external bookings for 3 more weeks starting tomorrow to give gamers every chance to fill the hotel.
Please help us achieve this!!!

If you do go to book please call rather than use the net as there are currently some gremlins in the system.

You can get hold of Mark or Tiani on -

Ph - (02) 6021 2733

Alcohol will again be provided upstairs and I'll be polling for choices closer to the weekend.

They are not licensed for BYO.

So GET BOOKING! Even if you think you are booked, a simple check wouldn't be a bad idea.

I would like to announce that BorderCon 2013 will again be sponsored by The Toy and Game Expo - Many thanks to Charles and the team for their support. The TGE covers the entire cost of the venue for the 4 days, which is really important for us now that the Con doesn't have club funds to support it.

This allows our door entry to go towards buying new resources for the Con like additional tables and the like.

This year I'll find a way to cram you all closer together.

Drop me a comment to this item so I can add you here.

Last Year NSW gave Canberra a serious run for the 2nd biggest group outside Victoria.

Okay so here we go...

This year will see something of a change from BorderCon tradition. The appeal of Taco Bills has been waning for many patrons in recent years and the Hume Inn has also extended to create a fully functioning Restaurant downstairs called -

Bonnetti's

Mark's Family (Owners of the Hotel) run this restaurant also so it would be great to support Mark who has been so good to us in past years and enjoy some good Italian Cuisine.

The upside is that we don't need to worry about the hassle of transport down the street and it will also allow us to have a good meal and then get back to the gaming with a minimum of fuss too.

I suspect we will look at booking two main meal times to help the kitchen cope and minimise our wait times on meals.

Of course no one is ever locked into these things so those wanting to do Taco Bills or other options are welcome to.

Other organised food options include -

Friday Night - Pizza

Bonnetti's also do classic Italian Pizzas so we will order from them this year...which means all Pizzas will be piping hot! cool

They will have great toppings and to offset the slightly higher cost Mark does Jumbo Pizzas for $30, which easily serve 3 people, bringing the cost back to $10 a head. mb

Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast has been handled in the past by Julian who likes to take a merry band for a short walk to the main street (for those wanting to get away from the hotel)

I'll wait to see if he puts his hand up again for this...

Sunday and Monday meals you are on your own but there is a bakery next to the hotel plus Bonnetti's may do lunch...I'll look into that.

Last night I sent a strongly-worded geekmail to Neil, as I am horrified by the latest developments.

Ozludo wrote:
...this abandonment of Taco Bill's is an outrage that cannot stand. "Unacceptable!", we cry.

Fortunately Neil is a great diplomat. A sensible compromise has been arranged cool

Since Neil has enough to manage, I have made a booking at Taco Bill on Sunday night. This gathering is not an alternative to the Saturday dinner at Bonnetti's. Really, it's just chilli and margaritas for those who want Mexican.

Now, I live in Melbourne, so I can't go visit Taco Bill's in Albury to make changes to the booking. I have also learned the difficulty of herding cats organising gamers. So don't expect a well-oiled machine like Neil maintains. Here's the deal:

▶ I have booked for 16 people only. Dinner at 7pm.

▶ Erin and I are two, Fra'lissa and Daughters of Different Ages are another four.

▶ The remaining 10 spots are open to anyone who wants to come. Please indicate this here!

▶ If we run out of space, people are welcome to make their own booking and ask for a nearby table. We promise to include you in as much gossip as possible.
It might even be possible to add your extra table to ours, kinda like a game of Acquire. You probably won't get a stock payout if this happens...

▶ It is essential to book early, because Taco Bill is very popular on the long weekend. Their number is 02 6021 2750.

⋘ So please let us know if you're interested. ⋙

40 Days Around The World

My wife is planning to run this again at Bordercon so hopes there will be some interest. It involves playing:

10 Days in Asia
10 Days in Europe
10 Days in Africa
10 Days in the Americas

ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!

The game last year didn't take that long (about 90mins - 2 hours), so I was just wondering if I could have a hands up for people willing to give it a try.

Every year BorderCon runs a prize table to help out a charity or organisation that does great work.

Sometimes we look to big causes, sometimes we go local and occasionally we are able to chose a cause that is close to someone in our gaming community.

For 2013 we are going to support ME/CFS Australia. This orgnaisation helps with research and the development around a greater awareness and understanding of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

This is a pretty awful condition that can completely incapacitate people and it is quite poorly understood, meaning that sufferers also need to live with people's misunderstood perceptions about their illness.

When considering a cause this year Melissa and Fraser got in contact to inform me that they are affected by CFS and are working hard to support 'Daughter the Elder' as she has been diagnosed with the condition, having been ill since Easter 2012.

As a family that have always supported the Australian Gaming scene and BorderCon (Daughter the Elder having attended the very first one and many more since, including the (in)famous Power Grid-a-thon) I was delighted to select ME/CFS this year.

So how can you help?

Well we will have a prize table like every year and we hope to have even more prizes up for the winning than usual. All you need do is put some money aside to buy raffle tickets over the course of the weekend and all money raised will go to ME/CFS Australia.

You can also donate games and accessories to the prize table if they are in good order and something people may want (I don't want to see 15 copies of LCR)! The more prizes the more likely we are to entice more ticket sales and every dollar is vital to organisations such as these.

Last year we raised just over $2000 and this year I hope to smash that given our community's personal link to the condition.

So save up and get ready to spend big.

The raffle is always drawn at 1pm on the Sunday of BorderCon. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20.

Otherwise our subscriptions will go mad and Neil will have a hell of a job spotting important updates on this list, the important one. Seriously - planning gabble should happen on the planning-gabble-geeklist.

So here it is: Bordercon 2013: what are YOU bringing?

*OK, might be a few more for some of the older, tired folks. But 13 days.

Ok so we saw Mark last week and here is the list of drinks that will be available this year...

Tooheys Dry

Cascade Light

Crown Lager

Peroni

Stellar

Corona

Beez Kneez (Limited)

Wines can be bought from the restaurant downstairs

I hope that caters to most people but we just aren't in a position to be offering a thousand types and the hotel is always cautious of being stuck with leftovers that they cannot sell otherwise.

Of course we will also have water and soft drinks available for the non-alcoholic drinkers.

This year we will also be hiring a staff member for the bar from 5-11pm on both Friday and Saturday nights to help take the load off of us.

All beers will be $4 this year.

Food Time - Gluttard is go! Glutton Free pizzas are no problem and they have glutton free pasta as well. cool

Friday Pizza

Friday night Bonetti's will do pizza. For $10 per person Mark will do their mega pizzas where they will bring 3-4 pizzas up at a time and the slices are large sized. They'll just keep bringing them up till we've had our fill.

Anyone wanting highly specialised pizzas are free to order separately downstairs but they will bring up glutton free pizzas and anchovi free / anchovi on options too.

Saturday Night

Ok so I have something of a system for dinner down at Bonetti's on the Saturday night.

We'll have 4 booking sheets available in the gaming room for people to pop their names onto and there will be 4 different times that you can go down for your meal.

I won't put the booking sheets up until Saturday morning so those arriving on the Saturday have the same opportunity.

If we need more spots I will harrass them. The restaurant will stay open as late as they need to though so it should be fine.

5:30 - 40 people

6:30 - 20 people

8:00 - 20 people

8:30 - 40 people

Hopefully that staggers us out enough that we can all eat at times that suit us, still allow us to share a meal with one another and get back to the fun upstairs in a reasonable amount of time. I think the staggered times will also allow those playing longer games to finish them before needing to be downstairs.

Ok folks less than 24 hrs to go - Woohoo!

The venue is all but set-up and we have used new tables and rejigged some things and we have 130 seats fitting in fairly comfortably.

Bar will be manned by actual staff from 12pm-11pm on both Saturday and Sunday to reduce our workload.

Prizes for the Charity table look awesome!!!

Can't wait to see you all again and meet some first timers too.

Travel safe everyone.

I will be coming Friday night to say hi and welcome people but I won't be there too long Friday. I have to drive to Melbourne at 4am tomorrow morning and then get back in the afternoon. We have Alex's next laser surgery at the Royal Children's so I'll be fairly knackered.

So I'll recharge my batteries Friday night and go hard Saturday and Sunday.

Very excited!
