For those that are not familiar, Indycon is a 3 day gaming event in Indianapolis dedicated only to board gaming. It is a fabulous opportunity to get all those hard core games you have been wanting to play throughout the year. Or for me it is a rare chance to play games with the toughest, brightest and most competitive gamers in the midwest. If you win here, you earn it.

It was a great year. I was able to arrive Friday early afternoon and came back for most of Saturday.

I was lucky enough to pull out a win in the game giveaway - Ticket to Ride Marklin edition. I am really looking forward to play this with my boys.

Here is a list of the goodies I got to play.

As always, a big shout out to Dave, Adam, Tammy and all the other organizers!

I started off Friday afternoon with this competitive area control game. Even better, my old friend Aristides was a part of it. I have never played before and had some difficulty getting the strategy down early. Alan was a area monster and just about won before I had any points on the board as I was working on a large area to complete. Fortunately I was able to complete this (with some reluctant help from Aristides) and take back more territory. After this I was able to bring an alliance to my two biggest neighbors - Alan and Jerry. Aristides turned his attention to Alan in a knight war. From there I was able to make some gains with my second city. The third city was 2 spaces big and surrounded.

A great way to start off the gaming.

Quick filler.

Lost two quick ones to Alan - probably as payback for the previous game

This is another new game I had not played before and Dave K was gracious enough to teach. This of course meant he did not win. We played the London map which initially confused me ; "so why is this called Hamburgum?"

It has good mechanics and I enjoyed it. I took the first church but was not able to replicate this and came in tied for second. Yes, that is tied for second. I refuse to recognize tiebreakers for second place .

I really enjoy Pillars and have not played the expansion. We played this even though we had 4 players. Really it kind of left too many options on the board, but everyone had this same issue so I don't think it really mattered. I still rank this as one of my favorite games. Zoe was the dark horse and was able to score some big points late.

Another filler while we waited for Jason to finish his Crokinole game. By the time we finished teaching, Jason was there so he joined in. I paired 4 royal guards as well as a few huge heads early which let me slide to the easy win.

I didn't get the other scores but played with:

This was my second play of Trajan, not that it helped because I really didn't remember what strategy I was not supposed to do the last time I played. It is a good game and had no trouble agreeing to play. Even though I did not think I was doing well, I came in a strong second. My only problem was I did not use my special card ability at all due to none of the same cards coming up during the game. And believe me, I tried to collect them as much as possible. Jason was strong the whole game and came out on top, mainly by conquering the mainland.

Ah the classic El Grande. Always a pleasure to play, and I got to play with some of the best. It was interrupted by the game give-a-way, which did not bother anyone at our table as we all won something! Overall it was a close game. I decided to change a score marker for the highest scoring region making it the lowest scoring region, which was probably a mistake. My homeland was next door and unfortunately became a target at the end of the game, with Todd taking it away with the castille. This was one reason I came in tied for last, but would not have made up the ground I lost to Aristides. Kudos, you won. This round.

The classics continue with Stone Age. This can be a great 1 hour game with the right crew, and we continued to have a great crew. Jerry was a mad man on the dice and scored big on the early resources. He rode this wave all the way through the game and none of us were even close. Just dominated us. I was glad to take second place, which seemed to be a theme for me this year.

Ouch. I played this one before, but I do not remember hating it so much as this time. I will have to place this one in the Small World bin of "I will never play this again". Yes I did lose, badly. But I just could not get into the game and was not a fan of any aspect of it, and I usually like the rondel games. Regardless, Todd and Chris seemed to get the flow and took the rest of us schmucks to town.

Another favorite hit the tables and I still won't turn a game down. I had a great group to play with, all experienced players. For the first time I worked my cards somewhat correctly and never had to worry about food. Really, I had food coming out of my ears. However, you can't win with food. Ross had a great balanced strategy and won with only having 2 people the majority of the game. We pointed out that it wasn't possible to win with only two people, but he apparently did not believe us.

To close out my weekend, I got to play this gem with Dave, our organizer and supreme commander and leader. It is a lot of fun, kind of a light Caylus. Kent had a great card that game him points whenever he played a card, and he rode right over us. Ken game him a good run for the money in the end, but me and Dave were stuck battling for 5th place.
