Growing up one of the memories I remember is a game my parents had that I desperately wanted to play, but alas I was too young. So I watched from a distance and drooled any time I caught a glimpse of the box. Now looking back and thinking about my parent, I have no idea how they even had the game or where they got it. They certainly weren't gamers. Or were they...?

Yes that game was Magic Realm. I recently asked my mother about it and if they still had it, but it sounds like it is lost forever. She wasn't too helpful in answering my questions of what, where, when, why? So I am still left wondering, where the heck did my parents get this game? Were they gamers? Mysteries that may never be answered.

My dad has or had this (I checked 10 years ago and couldn't find it anymore). In the same cabinet as Clue, Ungame, Monopoly, and Enchanted Forest. This seems to be a really rare game and I've never seen my dad even play a board game.

My parents were into games in a big way, with a collection of over 100, but when I got into games as an adult this was the one in their collection that surprised me most - that they'd ever bought it and tried it. I don't think my parents ever finsihed a game - they'd start one, move it to their bedroom to continue later, and then abandon it and pack it up. I think they enjoyed the theme (certainly my dad loved Civ games on the computer), but just didn't have the time with kids for such a long game - eventually they got rid of it.

My parents play a few games, but the only modern board games in their collection are games like Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan. I was shocked to discover that they had purchased and tried out Puerto Rico with their board game friends. Apparently, they had trouble figuring it out, gave up, and decided to donate it to Goodwill!

When I found the out about this I didn't already own a game copy of Puerto Rico, and my girlfriend and I were playing San Juan regularly

Didn't realize what was sitting in my house as a child. I am pretty sure my dad got this before I was born, and he tells of playing with my mom when they first got married. He also has a a whole bunch of other games such as Stocks and Bonds, Outdoor Survival, Feudal (I remember destroying some pieces as a kid), and Luftwaffe. They still sit on the shelf although they never get played unless I am there.

Our version had an even older box than the one pictured... liked the card holders, and the way the numbers helped you see visually that they were out of order, so even my younger siblings could play.

Great idea for the list! For me, it was Feudal. I don't recall ever playing chess or anything remotely similar when I was a kid. The next most complicated game in the house was probably Pit. Not sure where it came from, or what inspired it's purchase. I do recall my Dad being rather unsuccessful at trying to teach it to me when I was 8 or 9, but don't recall ever seeing it played outside of that.

Not sure exactly how my parents came to have this game in their collection (I think it was the only AH game), but as a young child I remember discovering this and just having a blast playing it with my father and friends over the years. It always made Risk seem like such a lesser game. The mechanic of the NPC player (orcs) building up and attacking neighboring territories is one I always enjoyed and wish I saw it in more civ games (the aliens in Eclipse seem so passive).

My parents were playing this with some of my aunts and uncles, when we were really young kids. When we learned to read and count, my mom teached us the game and we started playing me, my mom, my dad and my 2nd brother (the 3rd one was still too young). It wasn't long when I learned I could screw my opponents with flat tires and other nasty tricks, leading my younger brother to tears many times before my mom decided we should play friendlier games... ninja

Well, not the card game but the "real deal" Ouija board. I always remember when we were at grandma's house looking at the stack of games beside the box of toys there was Monopoly, Clue, Snakes and Ladders, Ouija board... Of course the few times we tried it, my cousins would just move it around to say funny things. I still find it odd that my mom and her sisters would have this "game" growing up. They must have been popular back in the 60's or something.

This was actually at my grandparents, either my Mom's or one of my Aunt's I suppose. There were never really a ton of toys around when I would go out there, but I would bust this out of the back closet almost every trip.

I got lucky and found it at a used book store a few years back for a couple of bucks, marbles were still shrink wrapped.

My father, who has never been a geek or gamer, had a copy of this in his closet. I took the boats into the bath to play with them and the cardboard quickly disintegrated. I was sure I was in trouble, but he didn't seem to mind in the least as apathetically he tossed the rest of the game in the trash.

My dad was never a big gamer, but he played the occasional Avalon Hill wargame in his youth, and he bought some for me and my brother to enjoy while we were growing up. I was rummaging through their basement the last time I was home for a visit, and came across this. I can't imagine my dad ever played this, and I know my brother and I never did... Anyway, turns out it's fairly rare, so I traded it away in what was probably a steal for the other guy, but I certainly wasn't going to play it.

Surprisingly my girlfriend's father owned this one. We found out about his 80s geekness when his most recent wife (now estranged) was having him perform a major cleanup in the house and literally had this THROWN AWAY IN THE GARBAGE! Fortunately, he knew Sarah and I loved boardgames and donated it this way. Complete sans 1 green piece I believe, working tower, and even a replacement bulb. Sad about the cleanup, but grateful that he thought of us.
