Hey folks! Some of you might watch the Tabletop web series by Wil Wheaton in which he and 3 guests play various board games (and one RPG!) on youtube. The show is apparently popular enough to give its makers the great idea of hosting a global event known as International Tabletop Day. Folks are encouraged to play boardgames on March 30th, 2013 (that's a Saturday....you're probably already off anyways ) with friends, family, or meet new friends at your FLGS (or other meeting spot) and spend some time throwing dice, drawing cards, role-playing, or whatever scratches your gaming itch.
So have you heard of it? Now that you have, will you be giving it a go and meeting with others to celebrate board game addictions worldwide? Go to www.tabletopday.com and register to get something going in your area.
About 2 weeks ago my younger brother and I went to our FLGS and inquired about starting a board game group. The business is tailored more towards comic books, and Magic the Gathering/Pathfinder RPG/Yu Gi Oh/Marvel Heroclix seem to be the only regular groups they have. So we arranged to start a small group up. When we looked at the best date we decided on March 30th as being a prime day to have an innaugural run for our new board game group, in no small part thanks to that day being picked as Intl' Tabletop Day.
So for the first time since my Air Force days back in the mid-90's I'm in a dedicated gaming group and will be meeting some new friends and playing some games, several of which I've never had the pleasure of trying out before. On the docket so far:
Pandemic Ticket to Ride Betrayal at House on the Hill (have never played this one) Munchkin (haven't played this one either)
And a number of others. At any rate I'm really looking forward to it!
Going to a friend's house for a first time play of Arkham Horror. I'm not sure of the number of players yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to it. I actually can't believe I haven't played it yet. I've played many, many games of Elder Sign, so I feel like I have a least a starting point of reference. From what I understand this game will take hours, but if there is time left I'm planning on bringing two of the following:
Last year we started a tradition with my friends to play the original (vanilla) Civilization board game on the Easter Friday and we are going to do it this year again. As that Friday is called in finnish pitkäperjantai which translates to english as long friday, playing the Civilization is quite appropriate for the day. And I know that we are a day ahead of the Internation Tabletop Day, but with all likelyhood the game will continue well over to the Saturday, so this kind of counts as participation to this event, rigth ? It is going to be full 7 player game with expectation to last 12-14 hours (with one pizza break). And after some rest we might actually get back together on Saturday for some lighter games, for a more proper participation to this event.
I'll be hosting an event in Carlisle, PA. We'll be gaming from 8am to 11pm. I have no idea what games we'll be playing! I'm just trying to invite as many people as possible and make it a big event. I'll have AT LEAST 20 people throughout the day. And I'm trying to use everything I can think of to spread the word. Facebook, MeetUp.com, BGG, Craigslist, and local news websites.
I can't wait for a fun filled day of gaming, food, and friends!
My FLGS is hosting a Tabletop Day event. I am doing my part. I plan on playing some Memoir '44. Hopefully, there will be enough people to play an Overlord. I also plan on taking a few more of my games but that will be more of a game-day decision.
