In honor of Earth Day 2013, below is my Top 10 list of games that focus on a "cleaner" environment, handling/removing pollution, or the effects of global warming (if such a thing exists . . . troll bait). These are games that substantially meet all of the following criteria: (1) focus on "green"--cleaner environment, handling pollution or waste (removing or being penalized for it), global warming, being eco-friendly, etc.; (2) compelling "theme" that has an interesting or unique take on the environment and what affects it; and (3) fun to play. This is a list of the eclectic and the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

For a complete listing of my Top 10 lists, see--MetaList: Nap's Top 10 Lists.

As always, thanks for reading and participating!

NOTE: Where I have included quotes from BGG users, I have included the BGG user name in parentheses.

I had some initial concerns that this might be a little too complicated. I love Vinhos, but it is a hard game to teach and get to grips with. CO2 is so much simpler though than the initial comments had lead me to believe. You have a choice of 3 actions, all fairly simple to do, and 3 free actions you can take during your turn, but only once for each of them. Not really that difficult. What is difficult though is using those actions efficiently to ensure firstly that you are keeping the ppm count sufficiently low, and that secondly you are racking up enough VP for the win.
The solo experience is pretty nerve jangling as well, and moves quickly from defeat back to possible victory only to fall to defeat again.
I see replayability in this as well, and feel it will last the term, so it might even make it to a 10. The possible downside is that any AP prone players will likely pass out playing this, and play times could really rocket with a few players who really can't figure out the optimal path.
All the additional parts also fit in nicely with the main heart of the game. The only thing I struggle slightly with is understanding the significance of the CEPs in the game - I get what they are, but feel a little confused about why you can buy and sell the, on the market.
But anyway, wow oh wow, a great game, and one of those, like Vinhos, that I find myself thinking about. So much so that at work today I started figuring out on a spreadsheet the most optimal path to victory for a solo game. Came home, played it, messed it up a little, and lost by hitting 500ppm on my very last turn. It all looked lost, then I overbuilt a Coal, moved down to 440 with 2 plants to draw. Drew a gas... And then a damned coal. A happy loss.

20th Century is a brilliant mix of auction and tile laying. The multiple auctions with multiple currencies are tight and gave you a lot to consider as you make your decision. The tile placement can be a real challenge and requires some clever spacial reasoning. I love that you have to find the balance between acquisition and growing to much and polluting. I does a a little runaway leader problem, but games with more experienced played will mitigate that. Overall I think it is a wonderful and overlooked gem.

A game with rather simple mechanics, but with a lot of depth in every decision you make. While not specially unforgiving, Industrial Waste makes you really face the consequences of your actions in a future time.

Speaking of which, it's one of those games where timing is key. All actions can be very useful or very useless by themselves, depending on how you mix them up, and especially, when you play them. For me, this is a great element to add tension to a game without putting it on the "rocket science" difficulty level, and I love it.

This, added to the fact that there is no "sure" path to victory, make for a very interesting experience every time you play it.

An almost perfect game. Light and easy to teach with only a single page of rules, yet complex enough to provide real choices and some sense of strategy. A sort of light and airy theme that definitely isn't necessary, but enhances the game nonetheless. And simply fun gameplay. Perfect to add to your bag to carry along to family gatherings or as a medium-length filler.

Brilliant, brilliant game. Straight resource acquisition and building game, with the need to stay ahead of the curve of death by pollution or graves. Nice twist with different possible victory conditions. Strategic more than tactical: I have much of the broad strokes of the game planned out during the initial placement phase when I analyze what the terrain gives me.

Spinal Tap rates this 11.

A very unique, intriguing design that only takes 10-15 minutes. I've never played a game like this before. It does indeed shed some light on the behavior of the other gamers in your group. I'm surprised, as I didn't think I would care for a cooperative game, and some in our group indeed did not enjoy the experience. We failed to save the world in both of our games, and from what I've read that appears to be the most common result by far. It seems that it would be extremely difficult to chip in enough to save the world and still win the game, so in that sense there isn't as much of a traditional game here, because it appears that you can't really play to win, although I'm not 100% sure. I can't believe I like this game so much, since I like to play to win. Looking forward to playing again!

i don't understand.
this is a GREAT early eurogames, with a strong theme.

Original and simple mecanic for a very accurate simulation of contamination and economy. still very actual

There is really a strategic play: from the set up of your country to your way of producing...

Worth trying !

Interesting environmentally-themed game. Not very poker-like, instead it's almost a trick taking game, where there are "suits" of three different environmental issues. Andrea is the expert here, of course, working in the industry, but it seems a big stretch to have a "deaths" issue that includes things like Hurricanes (which certainly aren't man-made, unless you're a Bond villain). If you're a crazy pro-Green liberal idealist, you aren't going to care anyway, you'll love the game because it makes everyone except dirt poor 3rd world countries look nice and evil (let's all move to Chad!). If you have a little common sense, you might appreciate the CO2 emissions data as an interesting factoid, and then might draw your own conclusions appropriately.

Another great adaptation from the original game. I don't consider myself a "tree hugger" but I really like the message.
