Below is my Top 10 list of games covering the Russian War from 1918 to 1921. These are games that meet substantially all of the following criteria: (1) focuses on the campaigns, battles and/or political struggles of the Russian Civil War (can focus on individual battles, conflict in Poland, operational level or the entire Russian Civil War); (2) primarily focusing on wargames, but can include political games as well; (3) addresses the "theme" in an interesting or compelling manner that leaves the player with a better understanding of the Russian Civil War (and its various aspects); and (4) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

For more Top 10 Lists covering great battles, check out MetaList: Nap's Great Battles Top 10 Lists.

For a complete listing of my Top 10 lists, see--MetaList: Nap's Top 10 Lists.

As always, thanks for reading and participating!

After more than 300 wargames played (many monster-games, more than 100 ASL scenarios...) I can say that this game is one of the 10 games to save in case of.... nuclear holocaust! Only for grognards, it need some player-aid, but it is a great game

Great game. Some of Mr. Raicer's games I didn't care for too much, but this is an exception. The operation of drawing chits for activation is quite good and interesting, especially for the Red player. The chits that the Red player has available to use from, varies, depending on Red Leaders, and the time period. The Whites have to strike and strike fast in an effort to keep the Reds in a quandary as to where they will attack next and which White Faction shall lead the way. They, more or less, have to kill time, because in order to win the Red player has to be in control of virtually the whole map. For the most part the rules are well written and precise and easy to understand. Mr. Raicer was readily available and helpful with any questions that I had. As with all GMT games the quality is great. A must have for Russian Civil War enthusiasts.

My #1 in VPG's States of Siege series. A game I can't win, and I can't stop playing. It (only just) edges out Ottoman Sunset by a nose for my favorite in the series, but it's at the top of my charts for all the same reasons: colorful components, endless replayability, and a brilliant design marriage of fast gameplay, meaningful decisions, historical accuracy and flat out fun. The more I play it, the more subtleties I discover in it. It's that kind of game.

Brilliant game, excellently executed component wise. Gameplay is super, the best fog-of-war system ever, better than your regular block game even, only a double-blind system would improve things. The bluffing is intense and the opportunity for maneuver and surprise attack aplenty. Awards clever play. A little luck only, the better player will prevail in most games. A new favorite of mine.

The first game that I ever owned where players held units from opposing factions. The victory conditions were such that either side could win... and points were awarded each player depending on a 'Red' Russian or 'White' Russian victory. The random turn order was a first for me as well... it stands out as one of the best multi-player wargames that SPI ever produced.

Excellent rendering of the Polish-Bolshevik war of 1920: Very clever diceless design with the right touches of control, unpredictability, bluff and fog of war!

This game is better played with two Soviet players and it's good having a great three players game around.

The rules are not difficult to understand, but leave a lot of unanswered questions. Fortunately, the Designer is very responsive and helpful!

With a clear rulebook (and with another font - yuck!) this game deserves a 10!

The first turn of the Gates of Warsaw scenario may be the best first turn in any wargame ever, at least for the Poles. I doubt the Reds share their enthusiasm. The game's several unique mechanics, most notably the ZOC rules, provide a fluid and dangerous situation. Not just a good simulation, but one that works well and can provide both players with a hair-raising thrill-ride. At any moment, whether you are either winning big or losing big, it could change in a flash not merely because of die-rolls but more likely because one player sees a vulnerability (e.g. the Miracle of the Vistula at the Gates of Warsaw).

Rossyia 1917 has very few games to compare it to: SPI's Russian Civil War and Jim Bumpas' Tatchanka come to mind along with GMT's Reds, too. This is an excellent job simulating the Russian Civil War.

If you are looking for a game to discover the Russian Civil War (RCW) this is the place to start for sure. It is one of the easier game and also one of the shortest to play the entire conflict. A really nice strategic little game here...

Interesting game of the Russian Civil War. To succeed, you must plan your attacks in co-ordinated fashion and use the map connection routes to cut off enemy escape. A tense and fun game, perhaps more game than simulation, but gives an excellent sense of the time and place. Ignore complaints about the map, which actually resembles an avant-garde work of art circa 1919; just look at the box cover art for an idea what I'm talking about.
