My son recently turned 3 years old. To say that we've encouraged him to play games would be an understatement. In terms of what he likes to play, he's definitely ahead of the curve compared to your average 3-year-old. We promote "thinking" games, but he likes what he likes, so there's a real mix in his top 10.

Below are his top 10 games based on what he most often asks to play. Feel free to leave comments on what your 3-year-old likes!

...or as we call it, Chutes & Ladders.

Why He Likes It
There are a lot of ups and downs in this game (pun intended). Anyone can jump into the lead or fall behind at any time. It's easy to learn and play. He's just as likely to win as an adult.

What I Like
Not a bad counting game. He stands a good chance of winning, but he certainly won't win every time.

What I Don't Like
No skill whatsoever. Some games feel like they'll never end.

...or as he calls it, "the T-Rex game"

Why He Likes It
13 colorful dinosaur figures, giant dice, and capturing dinosaurs with the T-Rex.

What I Like
Counting skills and figuring out which way to move the T-Rex to avoid him while improving your chances of capturing an opponent.

What I Don't Like
Components! The worst board ever - it's plastic and never lies flat. Plus the biped dinosaurs don't like to stand up. 3 and 4-player games take too long for what the game offers.

Why He Likes It
Moving the cars, landing on shortcuts, and searching the board.

What I Like
It's a cooperative game. I'm surprised how well he can remember where the items are when the search cards are drawn, so it clearly teaches memorization and attention to detail.

What I Don't Like
Winning or losing is pretty much all luck. Spinning "Pigs Eat" 2 times in a row is a big momentum killer.

or as he calls it, "the Star Wars game"

I'm a Star Wars fan, so he's a Star Wars fan. We've watched a few of the more child-friendly scenes from the movies, and a couple of the Clone Wars episodes, but mostly he like Star Wars for the variety of characters and toys.

Why He Likes It
Lots of interesting minis and landscapes. He gets to roll the dice, move the figures, draw cards, and play cards. My wife and I do all the decision making.

What I Like
Besides liking the game for its own merits, I like that he's learning about games where thinking and planning counts for something. Plus, it's a fairly innocuous way to learn about Star Wars.

What I Don't Like
He's still too young to understand why I want him to move the figures to certain spots or why I want to play certain cards. My wife is not a huge fan of the fighting and guns aspect.

Why He Likes It
Lot's of pieces to move around the board, and I've taught him to say "Sorry!" with a John Cleese accent.

What I Like
It has at least some strategy, it's relatively quick, and easy to learn.

What I Don't Like
Knocking out other players, and it's still mostly luck.

Why He Likes It
The seas creatures, but he'll still play the original. He seems to like numbers-based card games.

What I Like
Counting, a little bit of strategy, and he can play it with just a little guidance.

What I Don't Like
There's not much substance to this game, and he's still a little young to fully understand what he's doing.

Why He Likes It
Colorful tikis and moving them up and down.

What I Like
It's a game that works really well for both kids and adults. High quality components.

What I Don't Like
He gets what to do with his own tikis, but it's still a little beyond his reasoning when you have to consider what others are doing.

Why He Likes It
More Star Wars figures to play with, Lots of tiles to collect. Light sabers and Jedi masters.

What I Like
Another child-friendly introduction to Star Wars. He gets to make decisions on what skills to develop and what paths to take.

What I Don't Like
Almost all luck. I could write a script for the optimal way to play. How has the Game of Life never figured out how to make a spinner that works?

Why He Likes It
The challenge of trying to get me to fall on my butt.

What I Like
It's an outddors game you can play indoors. A game that promotes dexterity and flexibility. It can be quite fun with the right crowd.

What I Don't Like
He's still a little short to reach all the colors at the same time. For adults, this is a pulled groin waiting to happen.
