Spent $6.99 on a springbok puzzle called "Offering of the Coral Plants to the Emperor". The puzzle is from 1965 and still in shrink. After some research it turns out this version is made of wood.

Went to Goodwill Outlet today, and found a toner cartridge for my laser printer, which was inside another printer like mine (which I didn't buy). The cashier thought it was too heavy to weigh and charged me only $1. I didn't argue!

Same Goodwill Outlet trip ... I found a brand new exhaust hose for a clothes dryer. At .79 cents a pound, it was about $1.10. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but these stupid dryer hoses are like $8-$10. I guess the spring-coiled aluminum mines are running low?

Tru 4-Crock Slow Cooker Buffet Server. $19.99 at Savers minus 30% put it right at $15 -- brand new in box. My wife will probably not be too thrilled with me, because of the space this thing takes up, but I've always thought they looked handy -- especially for parties and gatherings around the holidays. New it's $70 at Bed Bath & Beyond, so I feel like it was a good deal.

I also found an appliance. The RocketGrill from Sunbeam! $170 new on Amazon and I got it for 30%off of $15.99. Could be parts missing, but it's never been used because the cardboard piece that says "remove before using" is still inserted inside it. I'll have to find the instruction manual online and order some of the parchment pouches, but this'll come in handy!!

I haven't found anything thrifty, interesting, and fun (or funny) enough to enter to this list for a while, but yesterday's thrift run was a treat in a lot of ways.

Browsing in a Salvation Army store, I found a little pile of Fingerstyle Guitar magazines, with one issue of Guitar World Acoustic mixed in. They are mixed dates from the late 90's into the early 00's.

I paid 25 cents each for 10 magazines, so only $2.50 total. The magazines are chock full of articles, interviews, lessons, reviews, and all around guitarry goodness.

I play only acoustic guitar, and especially love old timey fingerstyle folk and country blues -- Mississippi John Hurt is my Guitar Hero -- so finding this little stash of old magazines at such a huge bargain was a really special find!

Not that colosseum. The HABA architectural blocks version.

Found for $2.48 at Salvation Army. Missing one of the small "bleachers" pieces, but I bought it for a friend who is greatly enamored of the HABA architectural blocks and will probably be mixing it in with other sets anyway.

Also, well, it's HABA. I hear one must grab things of HABA manufacture.

1) My first find is still somewhat a "game" but not your traditional board game. It's a Coca-Cola "vintage collection" puzzle from 1982 and made by springbok!

Price: $2.00

2) Comics! I was surprised to find this thrift store had two HUGE racks FULL of comics. There was a fair selection of silver age comics (60's - 70's) and a HUGE selection of bronze age comics (70's - 85ish). I picked up three comics.

- First up is Action Comics #600 from May 1988. This is an interesting issue because it's the last issue of Action Comics before they switched the monthly format to an experimental weekly format. Action comics changed to Action Comics: Weekly #601 until around #645 I believe when it changed back. It's no Action Comics #1 (originals of that sell for millions, no joke) but it's still a cool find. It's worth depending on condition between $1.00-$4.00 and I paid $1.50.

- Next I found a copy of Wonder Woman #1 from February 1987. I would like to say this is a super-rare uber find but don't let the name and issue fool you. This is actually the first issue of volume 2. Many comics run in volumes. The various volumes usually restart the issue numbers from 1 and are often under different writers and artists. This is the first issue of volume 2, the very first issue of wonder woman from volume 1 is from the 40's and that's not even her first appearance! Her first cover appearance was in Sensation Comics #1 (much like Superman's first was in Action comics, not "Superman #1" as many might think). I paid $1.50 again (seemed to be their flat comic book price) and it's worth between $1.00-$4.00 depending on condition and how badly someone wants it of course.

- I saved my favorite for last! I was floored and immediately scooped up a copy of Naussica of the Valley of the Wind Part 1, Volume 2. I am a HUGE Hayao Miyazaki fan. Hayao Miyazaki is most easily described as the Japanese Walt Disney. He has such a great imagination and story telling ability and he has been making animated movies for decades. I own almost all his films and some of my favorite include Kiki's Delivery Service (the black cat MB im sporting is a character named Jiji from that movie!), Castle in the Sky, Naussica of the Valley of the Wind (one of Miyazaki's earliest films), Whispers of the Heart, and Howl's Moving Castle just to name a handful. I was surprised to see something like this. I may look for part 1, volume 1 now to see if I can find it cheap. It's usual in Japanese culture to run thicker volumes with fewer issues and indeed this is much thicker than your typical comic book however I still only paid the flat "comic book" rate the store has which is $1.50. It's from 1988 and looks to be fairly rare and worth $5.00-9.00 though there's no way I'm getting rid of it. That grime is actually just on the cover. Thankfully the book is in mint condition!

Edit: And by "cover" I mean the plastic sleeve, the actual cover is spotless! The whole book looks like it just rolled off the printing line!

Price:

-$1.50
-$1.50
-$1.50

========
Total: $4.50

So all together I got 2 DC comics from the mid to late 80's, an awesome Naussica comic from '88, and a vintage coca-cola puzzle from the '82 for a whopping(ly low ) grand total of $6.50!

I didn't get around to posting this one, but I'm kind of psyched and enjoying my purchase so thought I'd finally list it. I've always loved pinball, but never thought I'd get to own one since they are SO expensive! Well, this isn't one of those big, normal sized pinball machines, but it's a close as I'll ever get to owning one!

It's even 2-player! And has different difficulty settings. It's missing the legs, but I figure it's more stable on a tabletop anyway. I just need to prop the back up a little bit.

$6.99 at Savers!

I've made several fun and interesting non-game finds lately. The most recent is this terrific looking beer glass, bearing the logo of our very fine local (micro)brewery:

I guess they're not really a microbrewery anymore, but they sure were when I discovered Red Oak Lager! I knew then that it was some of the best dang beer I'd ever had, so I wasn't surprised at all when their operation began to grow and expand, and their beer begin to appear on draft in locations around our little city. Now you can get Red Oak beers in many locations across North Carolina.

If you'd like to, you can check out their website and learn more about the beers they craft -- it made me smile to see that this glass that I rescued is the same as the glass featured on the first page of the website:

http://www.redoakbrewery.com/ thumbsup

This glass was 99 cents, and I grabbed it right up, I wasn't going to take any chance on it being bought or being damaged while I waited a couple of weeks for the color tags to rotate around to where it was "on sale".

A few weeks ago, I found this terrifying statue of a ferocious killer cat:

I love the way this captures the "happy cat smile" that we cat lovers know so well. The tail and the little front paws actually hang over the edge of a shelf or whatever, so this is currently gracing the top of my main living room bookcase.

This little statue was just $2.00 and and there's not a chip or crack anywhere on it, so it simply had to come home with me -- it's nice to have another cat in the house that isn't running up the grocery bill!

Spiderman Maximum Carnage Limited Edit Set- I thought it was a game. My phone was in the car and I was supposed to hurry to the airport. The box is not in great shape but the book, limited edition card and little figures are in perfect shape. There is an empty slot for something else (DVD?). There are a couple on eBay for hundreds.

What do I do with it?

PS - if anyone here is interested I'd trade games for it.

EDIT - it looks like this but without the game. I figured out the empty slot was a sega game

$6.98, DAV

Plantraco Microblimp

Spotted it on the shelves on a Tuesday afternoon. Completeness inspection revealed that the instructions were missing, which, in this case, seemed like it might be important. Checked the web site listed on the box, where I found the instructions, and a retail price of $130. Went back to the store and grabbed it early the next morning. All components present and in like new condition.

the box wrote:
Contains everything you need. Just add helium and 4 AA batteries.

No problem, we’ve got piles of batteries lying around the house. Wait a second. What’s that word between everything you need and batteries? The estimated probability of finding helium in a thrift store is about zero, so it’s off to the neighborhood party store for $10 worth of helium at bust-out retail.

TL;DR: Radio controlled model aircraft. Net savings $117. Works. Way cool.
