When most people discover BGG they are usually blown away by the mass amount of games that are out there. When you look at the BGG overall rankings and see that there are 642 pages of games you can't help but be impressed and possibly also a little overwhelmed!

However, if you are like me, you have also noticed something as you have gotten more comfortable with the site: Just because there are pages upon pages of games, that doesn't mean that those are all necessarily GOOD games.

As I was playing around with the advanced search option I put in just two numbers that I thought were representative of a GOOD game(as determined by the BGG masses of course). I limited my search to games that had an average rating of 7 and that had at least 2000 votes.

I picked the number 7 because I figured that it is probably the lowest rating the majority of people on this site would give a game and still consider it good.

The number 2000 is more arbitrary but I think it is unlikely that a game will hit that number unless it has at least some staying power/mass appeal.

The results of this search surprised me somewhat. Only 266 games in the whole entire BGG Database meet those two criteria!!

Two humble criteria of an average rating of 7 and 2000 ratings and only 266 games!!

Which brings me to the purpose of this geeklist:

What favorite game of yours fails to meet this criteria? And more importantly, what aspect of the game keeps it from appealing to the masses when it so clearly appeals so much to you?

Out of my entire top 10 there is only this game and Strasbourg that fail to meet the criteria of 7 and 2000. Since Strasbourg is still fairly new I will instead only write about my #3 favorite game: Rook.

I think this game fails to meet the criteria for a couple of different reason:

1) It is an old game and this site is geared towards modern boardgames.
2) It is a dull looking game as it only features simple cards with numbers on them.
3) It is a trick taking game that is in the shadow of the more popular Euchre and Bridge games.
4) It really only shines when played with a competitive group and with all these newer and shiny games around not many groups will try this enough to get competitive at it.

46 votes, 6.70 rating. I give it a '10'.

Small print run. Lousy rules. Unbalanced.

Yet one of my favorites - I almost always want to play
this again after finishing a run-through.

Well, almost no game I am personally fond of, meet your criteria. 2000 votes are a LOT.
XiangQi is around for over 1000 years, is one of the most played games around the world - and has 1049 votes here on the Geek. Why? Easy:
- Its Chinese characters make it not easy for the dominating Western crowd here to get into the game.
- It's a combinatorial game (2- player abstract with no hidden information).
- It has no "lobby" on the geek, no "fanbase" like Hive or the Gipf series or other new games with an author / company behind it.

I enjoy playing this game though I admit that I am not very good at it. It is a 3-player game where two players play against one. (I understand that there is a variant for 4-player but I have never tried that before.)

I am also wondering what is causing the lack of mass appeal for this game. My guesses:

1) Being a 3-player game with two against one, some players may not like this idea and felt disadvantaged to play against two players. Are games designed for three players less appealing to gamers?

It is a climbing game that is similar to Tichu but Tichu is much more popular on BGG. Tichu is a 4-player climbing game where two players play against the other two.

2) It is an old game which originated from China.

3) It is played with poker cards. No special cards, meeples, nice wooden/plastic components etc. to attract the attention of people.

2000 votes....

It's not even got 200 votes. (113 ratings). 114 I did not even rate it myself....

Well it's clear why it doesn't meet the criteria.
But why doesn't it get more votes.

#1 - It's a cycling game. Most people don't give a shit about pro-cycling.
#2 - The Ratings are shared with Leader 1 and Giro'd Italia.
#3 - I never saw the game in a gameshop.
#4 - It's a simulation game, i guess not a lot of people want to play that sort of games.
