In the 1980's, Milton Bradley decided to publish some big box strategy games for folks who wanted a bit more from their board games. There were five games produced, each featuring large maps and tons of plastic bits, the Gamemaster games were a clarion call for what ultimately became a major cornerstone of the Ameritrash community. For me, coming straight off of Risk, it was just what the doctor ordered, and like a moth to the flame I got my first copy of Axis & Allies and have been a fan ever since. I still have that first copy, in an old, well worn (and very well loved) box loaded with plastic bits and lots of fond memories.

My original A&A box had a flyer inside that listed other games in the Gamemaster series, and a few were pictured on the sides of the lower part of the game box as well. For me and my younger brothers we made it our mission to one day own every single one of these games. Over the years there were occasions where we would *almost* able to get a copy of this or that game. I missed nabbing a copy of Fortress America in 1987 at the local K-Mart. In 1995 my brother narrowly missed getting a copy of Samurai Swords at a Toys-R-Us in Memphis, TN because he didn't have his wallet with him. When he went back the next day purposefully to buy it, it was gone. There were sometimes rumors of a Broadsides & Boarding Parties here, or a Shogun there, but no hard buys. For years I searched, and finally within the past few years I finally found some. Yesterday I received the final Gamemaster Game in the mail, and after 26 years I finally have the whole collection. cool

Designed by Larry Harris, this is undoubtedly the best known of the Gamemaster series. World War 2 wargame/simulation. One of my favorite boardgames.

A combination What If scenario/wargame, the US comes under attack from the commies on 3 sides. A thoroughly gripping, tense game from start to finish in which the US hangs on by a thread through most of the game. It took me almost 20 years to find a good copy of this one, and I even got the Saddam Hussein version!

Set in the Year of the Five Emperors (193AD) when Emperor Commodus (of Gladiator fame) croaked, and everyone decided they wanted to be Emperor. Each player is Caesar of a different Roman province and must eliminate the others so as to become the Big Cheese (Latin: Cheesus Largum). The game was reprinted in 2005 by Eagle Games, and this is the copy I have, so some may say my copy doesn't count. I say they're wrong.

Haven't played, but am told that the Catapult is way overpowered.

Set in the 1600's, this game (a Larry Harris design) pits a Spanish galleon against a pirate ship. A pretty entertaining and thematic game which will definitely draw some looks because, frankly, it's so darned cool looking. Giant plastic ships, pirates, and everyone speaks like a buccaneer when they play it. Very fun game. Also very expensive...this one hurt the checking account, but was worth the expense.

I just received this yesterday. Won in an auction last month, this was the final entry of the Gamemaster series that I needed to complete my set. And it took 26 years to get here. This game is a simulated battle between warring daimyo's in feudal Japan, but I have not (obviously) played it yet. Looking forward to my first match before too long!
