My first geeklist...not couting my "hey look what I just bought" lists from 7 years ago when I first discovered this site and didn't know any better...may I be forgiven.

On Good Friday, March 29 2013, I asked the love of my life to marry me. I'm not sure what in the world she was thinking, because she said "yes!" I am 28 years old, and had never found a girl I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I've lived alone for years, not because I am a recluse, but because I had decided that I would rather be single than settle for something less than "the one," or risk hurting someone when I wasn't sure. I didn't "play the field," I mostly just waited (and hoped, and prayed).

Then I met Anna, and everything changed.

Distance and various life circumstances have limited our time together, especially in the early stages of our relatonship. Which is to say, it's only been in the last 6 months or so that we've really been playing games together more frequently. She is brand new to this gaming hobby, but she has also been very gracious and willing to learn new games with me. She enjoys playing games because it is so much more personal and social than watching TV, which she is not a big fan of.

So, here is a list of games that I expect (or at least hope) we will be playing together years from now. Some of these are on here because we already enjoy them, and some are on here because I have purchased them after much research, hoping we will enjoy them. This list is still young, as is our experince gaming together, but feel free to add your own games you've enjoyed with your significant other.

Oh, and just in case she ever discovers this website and this list....
I LOVE YOU ANNA!!! And I am not addicted...promise.

This game will always be special to me, not just because it's a fun game for the two of us, but because it helped make our engagement extra special.
I took Anna into downtown Blowing Rock, North Carolina, carrying a bag with me the whole time. To keep her curiosity down, I told Anna that I brought some games in the bag, just in case we found a place to play. In reality, this was just a ruse. The engagement ring, and my portable speaker (to play "our" songs) were actually in the bag, along with a single game: Jaipur (just in case...). Anna unknowingly threw my game plan off by actually suggesting we play a game! So we found a neat coffee shop and played a game of Jaipur, giving me more time to calm down before popping the big question. Which I did, about 5 minutes after our game, on a secluded bench (our spot). I'm just glad she didn't ask what other games were in the bag.

I do think she became a little suspicious when I took the bag into the bathroom with me...

I know this is considered a light weight gateway game to most, but this was one of the first real board games I tried with Anna, meaning it was different than anything she had ever played before. She had tried and enjoyed some simple card games (Incan Gold, etc...)and a couple party games (Telestrations, etc...), but it was TTR which showed me that I would probably have a willing game partner for life. Her first remarks were "Wow, this is a really beautiful game". In our first game, she won by 1 point, and said that she really enjoyed it. I know people have all kinds of opinions on games to get casual people into gaming, but I've never found a game with as much universal appeal as Ticket to Ride. I've played dozens of times, online and in person, and I love it for its simplicity.

My fiancé’s current favorite game. She is such a laid back, gentle soul, that I really wasn't sure what she would think of such an insanely hectic game. But we both love everything about it. We love working together to meet a goal, and this one requires that unlike any other game I've played. She thinks the soundtrack is especially cool and novel for a board game. She has told others about this game, always a good sign. I already aquired the 2 small promo expansions here on the geek store, and I am looking forward to the US release of the Illusions expansion. I hope to see this game expanded in meaningful ways for years to come, as I've never played a game that elicited so much excitement from everyone who plays it.

This was the first game Anna told me she really enjoyed (before TTR, Escape, and other games came into the mix). She loves the bluffing/team aspect, and she is exceptionally good at keeping her identity a secret, without ever flat out lying. I personally enjoy this game a lot with the right group. Like most games, it falls apart if playing with a large group who are distracted by iphones, homework, or Sweet Brown remixes on youtube. Nobody got time for that.

After the success of Escape! and our teamwork on Saboteur, I realized that co-ops may be one of the best ways to go for us. We are definitely not spiteful players, especially to each other. I remember looking at this game years ago, and I've finally taken the plunge. I look forward to playing it with our group. I believe Anna will appreciate the theme, as she loves classic stories/characters/settings. Easy to learn but highly replayable: that is what I want and expect from this game. I went ahead and got the Merlin expansion, as I feel co-op games need to stay challenging. If we start winning a lot more than we lose, in the expansion goes! I hear that Camelot is a silly place, but I still want to go. whistle

I really think we can both get behind the idea of working together to save folks from a burning building. It just seems to fit her nature. Me? I would let the cat get toasty. I saw my sweet girl's laid back, meek personality turn into that of a "JUST ONE MORE ROLL!!!" addict, and I loved it.

Ah, Takenoko. I was curious because of its beauty. I am shallow, I admit it. Please look away from my shame. Then, I tried it online just to see if it was half as fun as it was pretty, and I was very much pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was. I had to make myself stop playing online long enough to order the real thing. I just didn't expect such a pretty face to also be so much fun! If I had one word for Takenoko, it would be: SuperPleasantAndEnjoyable. I've not tried with Anna yet, but after her remarks about the fun and beauty of Ticket to Ride, I feel very confident that Takenoko will have a permanent place in our collection.

I'm trying to not include expansions on this list, but TTR Team Asia gets special mention because it feels like a brand new game compared to regular TTR. We get the simple fun of TTR, with a dose of teamwork that we are so fond of. If TTR is a classic board game, then Team Asia is a classic partnership game. It feels twice as heavy as regular TTR without really being much more complicated at all. Part of this is because the Asia map is new to us, and part of it is because we want so badly to tell our partner what we need, but instead have to throw subtle hints with how we play. I don't really forsee this one ever getting old. TTR with teams, up to six players: golden.

Ok, this one might be a little ways off. I watched all of the excellent "Watch it played" videos here on the geek and ordered the game, but I think it will be played only after some other co-ops are mastered, like Shadows over Camelot and Flash Point. Though I would normally never pick a battle game as a prime pick for Anna, I believe the children's storybook presentation of this one will be enough to make it a winner. Anna loves stories. I love board games, especially ones with such awesome bits. Here's hoping this is a match made in heaven. The fact that we are working together makes me feel better about the length of the rulebook. If this were a competitive game, I would say we are nowhere near ready to tackle it. We are getting pretty far from her Scrabble and Scattegories roots here...

I think Anna must really enjoy secret role games. This one is another of her favorites, among the still short list of games we've tried together. Just like in Saboteur, I think it's her meek personality that helps her excel with secret identities. I just can't believe she could ever be a spy?! This is one of those games where my group said "where's the game?" when they heard how simple it was, but by the end of the first round, tensions (and accusations) were soaring. Great game for a group of 5-6+.

Congratulations! May the two of you share many years of happy gaming (and, y'know, the rest of life too). You've chosen a lot of great games. A lot of these are favorites for my husband and me.

Another possible addition for the two of you would be Taluva, which was out of print for years but has just recently been reprinted. If you're lucky enough to have a tropical honeymoon, the gorgeous finished board will remind you.

Another game my husband and I frequently enjoy together is Cartagena. Both of these games can play with more than two, but both are excellent with just two.

Lastly, I'd also recommend Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small, a much shorter, streamlined, 2-player version of Agricola, with plenty of cute animeeples.

It took about half of a game for this to become the go-to 2 player game for my wife and I. It has cracked the BGG Top 15 for a reason.

We'll play other games to change things up from time to time (usually at my suggestion), but any time she initiates game play, she always says "I want to play Castles."

First, let me give +1 for Jaipur which I think is a great couples game. My wife (gaming partner for 35 years) likes that one a lot.

This game (Oregon) is also similar in weight to Finca although it plays differently. Decent with two, very open and not too competitive, but scales well to the four player level when it gets more crowded and tactical. Enjoy a lifetime of gaming.

My non-gamer wife will reject most anything with long rules, militant theme, fiddly pieces or dynamics, or much direct aggression. Other than TTR (which she usually makes me play to exclusion or all else), she does like this one. It is easy to learn, has nice easels, and pretty artwork (literally) which you get to "paint".
The exception to the above rule seems to be Titan, which my wife loves, and can play for hours, for reasons I cannot explain. I won't add it to this list because I don't think it will appeal to most non-gamer wives as it is more like a wargame. I think she likes getting to recruit all those mythological creatures.

Congratulations, Trevor!

Many happy blessings for your wedding and marriage.

It's been mentioned already, but I have to highlight the new Agricola 2P. This is my wife's favorite game, and it gets my highest recommendation.

It has nearly the strategic heft of Agricola, but with 25% of the stress and plays in a half hour. Your farmers work tirelessly without any food, and the animals reproduce vigorously.

Thank you for this happy list and the often-needed reminder to game with your partner's interests in mind.

My wife is definitely not a gamer and, TTR and Jaipur aside, I struggle to find games she enjoys, especially anything over 30 minutes long. But she really likes World Without End. It happily takes from 2 to 4 players, and is of a similar complexity to Stone Age. In this game there is excellent narrative and the game unfolds over a period of decades. Bad and good events happen that can harm your plans, but there isn't a strong 'nasty to your opponent' aspect to it. It's each of you trying to get by against the difficulties of life in the 15th Century. Really really atmospheric and with easily understandable rules.

One of the benefits of loving a smart woman is guaranteed challenge presented in strategic games. Sometimes, though, we're more in the mood for the board game equivalent of movie night.

Move to the patio, pop in some thematic music (recently I used Arabia by Steve wood), serve the hummus and pitas, and start story time.

I always feel like I'm playing this with my wife...later we can play against each other.

I highly recommend Battleline. My wife is a non gamer (notwithstanding my attempts to convince her otherwise); dislikes complex rules and long games.

Battle line is perfect for us. It plays quickly (20 mins approximately); has limited rules; is easy to learn. Nevertheless the mechanics can result in some incredibly tense moments as we are both trying to draw for the same card, and stalling from unnecessarily committing our cards lest our opponent exploit a weakness.

Love it! We often play best of 3. Probably the best value game in my collection taking into account cost, number of plays and overall enjoyment.

PS. Thanks for sharing your story and hope you have great life of gaming together.

Congrats on your life together.

This is a great 2 player game that involves activating/drafting cards and dice allocation. You have a line of cards that are pitted against your opponents line of cards. Dice are used to determine actions each round. Simple rules and plays quick with a lot of interaction as each player is trying to destroy the other players best cards.

Congratulation. I'm getting ready to celebrate 25 fantastic years married. Absolutely the best thing that ever happened to me. My wife loves Carcassonne. Mostly because she can beat me 8 out of 10 times. Just a little hint. There is nothing wrong with making sure your wife wins her fair share. If I've learned anything over the last 25 years it that when my wife is happy, then so am I.

Enjoy and best of luck!!!!!
