I don't take offense to the term Ameritrash.

But I have slowly drifted away from the game type as the clean, tight, shorter play times of Eurogames have really begun to cast their fancy spell over me.

However, I'm aware that there are some "Ameritrash" style games out there that are clean, refined, and somewhat Euro-y in their execution...and I LOVE that about them.

Below is a list of "Ameritrash" style games that follow the following criteria:

Finite play time (i.e. set number of rounds, VP limit ends game, some other sort of game ending mechanism that keeps the game from going and going until everyone is beaten into a bloody pulp, only ending when there is just 1 player left standing.) The game takes maybe a couple hours to play, but doesn't run on for 3,4,5 hours like some Ameritrash games.

Clean, tight gameplay (not sloppy as in Axis and Allies or Risk where you just buy a crapload of guys to throw into battle, but rather slightly more gameplay strategy types, that has each player acting in a somewhat orderly way, other than only "buying troops and pushing them around the map". I dislike games that have so many guys that the board can't fit them and you're forced to use tokens. Fewer and smoother game phases/sub phases, well written rules, etc. are a plus. I think saying a game that does not reward 'turtleing' would be welcome on this list.

The "clean, tight gameplay criteria could be deciphered many ways, but I'll let those who post define that as they may, and you can take my first few geeklist items as examples. However, the main point/genre of the game should still be in the spirit of the "Ameritrash" game.

Possibly some Euro-y mechanisms thrown in, like resource management, action point allowance, or worker placement, but still at the games heart is Ameritrashiness, of building an army, having lots of plastic bits, area control, etc

Player elimination should be rare or null...games should end before someone is out totally, or the game should be short enough that it won't matter too much.

Ideally full of plastic bits but not necessary if it has all the other aspects of ameritrash/wargame.

Games we shouldn't see on this list? Axis & Allies,Risk,Ikusa,Conquest of the Empire,Viktory II, etc, etc

Have fun posting!

This game for me could be the poster child of this geeklist. The game is full of plasticy goodness, and players are gathering forces, controlling area and going for the kill, but the rules and purpose of the game, despite being themed as chaos, are quite nice, refined and not only about killing you opponents (Unless you're playing Khorne devil.)

With card play, action point allowance, different paths to victory, victory point tracks and a game that ends when a player hits a certain point, this is my idea of the perfect Ameritrash game that starts to remove the trash.

No player elimination in this one!

Another game that could be the poster child to this geeklist.

This game forces you to attack...but not to eliminate all in your path, but rather seemingly to earn VPs. The game is a VP race, and turtling in this game seems to do you very little good.

The game has been compared to Antike but uses a form of worker placement rather than a rondell wheel.

This game seems very interesting! I don't think there is player elimination, and losing an attack doesn't necessarily put you out of the running, it just gains your opponent some VPs.

I've also heard this game is able to be completed in 2 hours or less.

Anyone play this yet?

A great Ameritrash game, but with a victory point goal the game ends in respectable time.

With the victory points, card play and very short, clean and streamlined rules, this is an Ameritrash game that has cleaned up its act.

Plus, its just a friggin' good game! I prefer the 1st edition to the 2nd for the simplified graphics.

In the games I've played, the game is usually over before a player is eliminated.

Here is an interesting one.

Build your army, conquer the map, it seems all very Ameritrashy. But something about this game seems more refined than your typical american style wargame.

No plastic bits, but the game otherwise is less "Ameritrash" and more hybrid.

If someone were to take Risk, add card play mechanisms, put a turn limit of 4, and put the game in a blender with a pinch of Euroness, this is what you would get.

A seemingly Ameristyle type guys-on-a-map wargame without the feeling we get from true "Ameritrash" style games, but still with the satisfaction of conquering the world!

This game has some very clever mechanics and with the card play and wooden cubes instead of plastic men, I get a feeling of refinement and hybrid.

Also, it doesn't take 4 hours to play!

This is a diceless Ameritrash style game.

I considered leaving it off this list due to its length, but man, talk about class! This game is gorgeous and feels, while playing it, very streamlined and Euro-like, even though it is quite heavy.

There is player elimination, and the game runs long (despite limited game turns) but this game is just too fancy to leave off the list.

Granted, since obtaining the game in October of 2012, its only been played once due to the length and cut-throat nature.

Dare I? Certainly, the first edition would not qualify on this list as the Ameritrash system allowed the game to go on forever! The new version has cleaned up it's act though and turned into a tight tactical battle game without player or even team elimination.

I've just recently played StarCraft: The Board Game for the first time. But I think it should definitely be on this list.

The play time is reasonable since the game ends after a player reaches 15 VP or after he fulfills his unique victory condition in the final third of the game.

There's a really neat resource management system, players are limited to placing 4 orders per round and combat is resolved with cards from decks which are improved with a deckbuilding mechanism (which was the first appearance of the deckbuilding mechanism!).

Player elimination is possible though...

But nevertheless this is really a well designed, great looking, theme dripping Ameritrash gem without any trash.

Unfortunately it's out of print since FFG lost the license and Blizzard gave it to Winning Moves who put the trash back in by creating RISK: StarCraft Collector's Edition. Such a step backwards... That's really a shame!

Plays in typically in under 3 hours, with the quick play variant often 2 hrs.

No platic bits

A little bit of a fantasy Axis and Allies combo, but with finite number of turns, does not reward turtling, and the game ends upon any player elimination.

Also has heroes, dungeons, monsters, treasure, experience points, levels, magic spells, and big armies.
There is a little bit of a civ aspect of building up infratstructure, buildings, technology/ritual summonings.

Fair Disclose: I'm the designer. We were just released this past March. There is a pretty thorough video review from Undead Viking on our page.

Thanks!
Larry
