Result: We called the game for overstaying its welcome.

He walks in the classroom, cool and slow
Who called the English teacher Daddy-O?
(well, its a game of coasters)

Skulls and roses is a game of simplicity and hilarity but perhaps six players is too many, because nobody seemed able to make their bets and we called the game for running too long and our seventh player (Swami) had arrived anyway.

Still, I will be keeping it in the rotation

Scores: Peter 12 Colin 10 Bill 7 Stuart 3

Colin introduced 'Dominion: the dice game' and a pleasant time was had by all.

Surprisingly I won which I put down to my ruthless culling of my white quiddity dice, the equivalent of Dominion Copper cards. You need to concentrate your dice pool.

Colin could well have won, being just short of the glory target for his last two turns, but rolling poorly when he needed his Mighty Seraph to perform and score in-turn.

I am not sure there is any depth of strategy here, but who doesn't like rolling loadsa dice?

Result: Colin won.

After lunch, Terra Mystica was still occupying the next-door table and Stuart had departed so Bill Colin and I broke out this visually arresting family game where you compete to scale a skyscraper.

Highlight was my sabotaging of Colin, only to bring him crashing down on the head of my climber.

Easygoing fun.

Result: Peter lost, everybody else won.

Now this game does play well at the maximum numbers, but Peter does not, being all tells and trembles.

Eventually I got myself eliminated by having no card to play and the rest of the gathering 'rejoiced in their shared victory' - or in my defeat anyway.

Result: Colin won.

The duke

One of a pair of minimalist filler card games that are enjoying fleeting(?) fame and desirability at the moment. (The other being Love Letter). Today we used Coup as the last half-hour closer.

The Contessa

Good swift fun in the ice-breaking manner of Bluff, Diamant etc but I was left thinking that this is a game which can be prefectly played with a standard deck of cards and a few counters. Unlike Love Letter you don't even need to go beyond easily-remembered equivalences ie Ace=(A)ssassin, King (upgrade the Duke) Queen (ditto Contessa) Jack (Captain) and 10 (Guard).

The Captain

In the old days before the great gaming revival, there were dozens of themed/semi-themed games played with standard cards and no-one produced them, just included the rules in books or newsletters. But modern gamers seem to have an aversion to standard playing-cards.

The Guard

Good to have both Godfrey and Stuart visiting.

There was a qualifying tournament in the hall today for some manga-style CCG called Vanguard so the place was packed and loud, in a good way.
