Currently there seems to be a good number of wargames that cover tactical combat from WWII to the present with quite a variety of approaches to handling this subject. With this list I hope to list those in print, plus those likely to be soon in print. And even more so I'd like to see a discussion comparing these games. What are the things about each game that work well? What is interesting about each game? How does the approach to the subject differ in these games and how is that reflected in the rules and components?

My comments on each game, and in some cases the lack of comments, are just my personal opinion and I hope that they can be a starting point for discussion. My lists of pluses and minuses for each game is not intended to be complete, rather is what I first thought of. The order that I have placed the games in the list is simply alphabetical, which has the advantage of placing ASL first :-)

Please add any games that I may have missed.

Enjoy,
Tom

Advanced Squad Leader is the most well established of tactical wargames, and therefore is a natural one to compare all others against. My experience with this game is limited to reading the rules from ASL Starter Kit #1 and playing one of the scenarios solo.

I hesitate getting into this game due to the cost and time needed to do so. To start I would need to buy the rule book and the base module, Beyond Valor. I found the rules from the starter kit hard to follow, and need more time working with them to get the system down. Having said that, I know that there are many people out their that would help and that once into the game there is more material available that there is time I could ever find to play it all.

Comments:

ASL is an established system, with rules that have stood the test of time.

It also covers virtually all of WWII.

Infantry, armored vehicles and weapons are all covered.

Even solitaire rules are available.

Lots of players and material available.

The ASL Starter Kits are very much a part of ASL and in some sense do not need to be listed separately. But they do provide two, and soon to be three, standalone games that can be played independently of all the other ASL games.

Comments:

Each kit covers one portion of the rules at a time, so are easier to learn, and also cheaper. ASLSK 2 builds on what is in ASLSK 1, and ASLSK 3 builds on both of the others, so by the time one has learned ASLSK 3 most of the core rules for ASL have been learned.

Each ASLSK is a standalone game and if one wishes no other ASL product needs to be purchased.

Combat Commander is not yet in print, though it looks like it will be by the end of the year. Mainly from demos run at game conventions this game has generated a lot of interest. I was luckily enough to play in one of those demos and I am very excited about this game. What I know about this game comes from that demo and reading the rules that are available on the publisher's, GMT Games, web page for this game.

Combat Commander has been described by the designer as being influenced by both Squad Leader and Up Front. The maps and counters remind me of those of ASL, but cards play an important role in the game. It is the cards in the player's hand that determine what that player can do with their units. One thing that many people will miss is the lack of tanks in the game, though there is talk about a separate game to cover armored vehicles combat.

Comments:

The game plays quickly and most scenarios can be played within an hour.

The are of moderate complexity and the game can be learned quickly.

Interest is kept high during the game, partly because it plays quickly, and partly because reactions can be played, by a card play, during the opponents turn.

The difficulties of command and control are abstracted into the use of cards. On any given turn a player may not have enough cards with move actions to move all the units that they wish.

Differences between troops of various nationalities in handled both by the values printed on the counters and by a unique deck of cards for each. Each deck of cards will have different mix of actions and reactions to reflect how they performed during WWII.

Rules for random scenarios are included, and one can be easily and quickly generated.

Combat Soldiers - In the Battle of the Bulge is a game that I know little about, other than skimming the rules which are available on the publisher's, Lost Battalion Games, web site. It is a card game that I suspect was influenced by Up Front. What is different about this game is that each player controls both American and German units at the same time.

Fields of Fire is not yet in print, but looks to have a different approach to tactical games. What I have learned about this game has come from its forum on www.consimworld.com. It is a card game that puts emphasis on the command and control aspects. Also within the game there are scenarios for WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Also, it is mainly a solitaire game, though there are two player rules included.

The player in Fields of Fire takes on the role of a company commander. Command and control is specifically handled in the game. For example orders are passed from the company HQ to the platoons, and communication is done by the use of radios, field phones and runners. These and other things will make this quite a different game from other tactical games. I am interested in finding out more about this game.

Lock 'n Load: Band of Heroes, LnL: BoH, is another squad level game. This game covers the American paratroop actions in Normandy. There are other LnL games, now out of print, covering the Vietnam War. A LnL game is planned set in the Falklands War. I have played this game several times and enjoy it. Demos of LnL are available at the LnL web site.

Comments:

The rules are of moderate complexity and can be learned quickly.

Scenarios can be played quickly, typically within an hour.

There is little downtime, a players only activates a unit, a stack of units, or units under command of one leader then the other player gets to the same.

Some scenarios have surprise elements built into them which are triggered by things like a unit being within line of sight of a specified hex. This adds interest to a scenario, though at the cost of replayability.

actical Combat System, TCS, also is a game system with several games available. There is one game set in the Korean War and one in a America vs USSR war, the rest are all WWII in Europe. I believe that there are similar games available for the American Civil War and the Napoleonic Wars. In this game the player takes on the role of a battalion or company commander. I have only quickly looked through the rules of this game.

As I understand it TCS emphasis command and control by use of op sheets. These appear to be maps where units are assigned a operation to execute, such as to attack a hill, and a route to take in doing that. This op sheet remains in effect until a new one is draw up for the units and it is implemented which depends on a die roll. This sounds interesting and I'd like to learn more about the game.

Comments:

Appears that the emphasis is on command and control aspects.
