Most people say that Settlers of Catan is the biggest gateway to modern board gaming. For me, it was Carcassonne.

The first game I played was Carcassonne. It was definitely a game I enjoyed a lot. I loved the way the board grew as the game went on. Then I played Stone Age. I was immediately hooked. I loved the luck of the dice and trying to gain resources only to be disappointed with my awful dice rolls. I also liked how intense the game became as the huts and cards started to dwindle. This is easily the game that got me hooked.

I attended WBC last summer, but I didn't go for me. I went to take my four oldest kids, because there was a week-long Juniors board game competition there. WBC provides one big room at the convention where kids can play pretty much the whole day (but not late into the night), with adult GMs taking turns teaching games and running the competitions. Awesome.

Okay, so I dropped the kids off at the room. Now what was I to do? I didn't know how to play any adult games. I wandered into the Demo room, and happened over to a table where Thurn and Taxis was being taught. With the benefit of an excellent instructor:

I was able to walk into the competiton forty minutes later, sit down to a table of adults who knew the game, and play somewhat competently (I tied for second, but it was a distant second).

This was an eye-opener for me. I learned a game in just a few minutes (as a youth, a 48 page rulebook was pretty standard). Game playing time took an hour or so (board games take at least four hours if they are any good, right????). Fun, interesting decisions. Beautiful looking game (nothing like the grey cardboard squares that I thought of as "games" as a kid).

Wow. Welcome to the hobby. It's about nine months later, and I am something like 500+ recorded game plays on BGG cool

Got this as an extra purchase as a prize for winning a Warhammer 40,000 league May last year. I discovered BGG soon after, was amazed at the huge plethora of games, got Small World, and never looked back!

I now am semi-retired from 40k, haven't really played TOI for a while, but that's because I have a lot of boardgames now to choose from!

While not the best game I've ever played, it was the first pickup I had in a long while. The cooperative element was new for my group and everyone liked it. Plus it spawned off a regular game night and many other games have been purchased since.

This is a two pronged answer for me, as I have had two distinct dives into the hobby.

The first was waaaaaaaay back in 1988, when my folks bought me a copy of Talisman (second edition), which soon ballooned into all the available expansions. From there, I spent the next five years flipping between those and actual RPGs, with many other boardgames thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, due to life getting in the way, I had to forgo my love of gaming for over a decade, when a friend used the gateway of choice - Carcassonne, to get me back in, and I've not looked back since.

Settlers was my first exposure to hobby games. But only played it a few times. Then played TTR once and Acquire a couple of times.

... then played Puerto Rico about 30 times. It was the one that hooked us.

I cant believe this hadnt already been added. I always looked forward to visiting my uncle; knowing that if we had a clear day, we would spend all day playing this bad boy. I would normally lose, but I was always wanting more.

This is the game that taught me that there was more to board games than chess and monopoly.

and prior to that I had no gaming experience. He has been a gaming geek his whole life and has further introduced me to basically every game that I've played. He is what is defined as an enabler. Mike suggested we play it one day and so began our mad obsession with perfecting our farms and competing against one another (he wins ~62% of the time). We even play 2 boards each so that we can use the 4-player cards. Right now we are in our 87th game of this setup. Agricola became the catalyst for my addiction which led me to start experimenting with more dangerous drugs like Squad Leader, Civilization and Twilight Struggle. I now embraced my new status as a geek and wear it proudly all thanks to Agricola and Mike W.

This is the one that got it all started. Tableau building? Unheard of! No board? Whaaaaat? Rotate the cards to show resources? Shut up! This game literally blew my mind and started me down the wonderful cardboard road!

P.S. hate the new Catan Card Game. Give me the original with the expansions, play with two production dice instead of one, and let's go!
