First things first: this is very much tongue in cheek laugh
Second: I am not a Psychoanalyst, but I sometimes enjoy talking all "Freudy" to play with people's expectations of what my job entails.

I do actually use board games in therapy with children, but I thought rather than making a list about that it would be more fun to explore the deep, hidden (so hidden you don't even realise it's the truth!ninja) meaning of games in my collection. Feel free to add your own and expose your id's secret, demented desires.

Now follow me on a journey into board gaming's shadow side....

"Village" aka "Immortality Project #1"

Unable to face the prospect of death, villagers strive for immortality in various ways: living on genetically through future generations, an after-life through religion or leaving their mark on plough-making history.

However death is inevitable, especially when my wife needs to sacrifice you to fill the last space in the village chronicles.

Monsters (aka unacceptable drives and urges) seek to escape the confines of the mansion (the unconscious to consciousness) which would result in madness (and probably some people getting eaten).

You might think this is some exploration of mortality, but alas, it is darker than that.
As you play you smile and laugh with the people you think are your friends and allies, unaware that you actually hate them! Reaction formation at its best: you hide your loathing for your friends with a mask of cooperation and camaraderie. Sometimes when you lose your true feelings come out in a tidal wave of blame and recrimination.

Incest, betrayal, murder and intrigue. Dark themes that suggest the hidden desires you are unwilling to face? No!
It's another psychoanalysis switcheroo and again reaction formation rears its ugly gorgeous head. The person you attack most is actually the object of your deepest fantasies! (You could use this as a great defense the next time a friend tries to attack you)

A game of benevolent heroes risking life and limb to save cats and dogs?
Think again!
This is a two-pronged attack. Firstly, we have identification at work. By pretending to be a fire-fighter (with no risk at all to yourself) you are able to integrate their positive characteristics into your own self-concept.
Secondly, the martyr complex. By saving lost-causes you can differentiate yourself from that sad group. After all, surely you don't need rescuing if you are the rescuer...

Not many people know this is actually an experiment in drawing out the id. Sure, you might start out as a merchant, providing goods to needy colonists, but the harsh realities of life on the sea cannot be met by the niceties of the superego.
Enter the id, cannons blazing and a harsh laugh echoing around the room as you send your friend to Davey Jones' Locker.

Dracula: representative of everything you envy in those around you. He gets to travel about Europe with his bevy of vampire beauties, never gets sick, parties all night and has all kinds of cool talents.
Jamming a stake into his chest and chopping off his head will make you feel better about that colleague who just got a promotion ahead of you.

So you are an enslaved, transgender gorilla who makes his/her way through life by robbing impoverished beggars.
And then you play Tales and feel better because you can project these attributes onto your character rather than see them in yourself laugh

Ah sublimation. So you want to lie to your best friend's face and destroy everything they ever hoped to achieve, but worry they might not like you quite as much after you do.
Just play Battlestar Galactica. It's just a game! Don't take it so seriously! ninja

If ever there was a game that celebrated the triumph of id over superego, this is it. The title appears to be quoting a serial killer.

This game is a preferred acting out for those with multiple personality disorder, although when I wake up and look at it again I see notes left by Cyril, Big John, Sally, Vernon, Sybill and The Ninja who think it reflects our reality.

Pedro disagrees and says he and his brother-in-law who prefer playing
with their 7 families

First you count things, then you line them up to fit as perfectly as possible. You can't have too many, and you can't have not enough. If you don't do it correctly, something bad is going to happen.

Sounds like Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to me.
