I started this little project just by wondering how many games I could play (or would want to play) with a standard Checkers and/or Chess set. Then I noticed that there were some cool variants that can be played with extra pieces. And I noticed that other variants used bigger boards, a couple of which I happened to have as part of other games. And I saw a big Chess travel bag for sale. And then it occurred to me a Go set could also fit in that bag. And now I'm thinking there might be some games I could play if this set had a board with hexes on it, and that I should use a duffel bag with only roll-up boards...

You get the idea. This is now a travel set containing the possibility of more abstract games than I could master or even play in a lifetime. But I'm still deciding on exactly how far to push it, and I'm documenting it little by little. Here are the contents of the set to date:

)1 vinyl roll-up 8x8 square checkered board
)1 vinyl roll-up 9x9 square checkered Ministers Chess board
)1 vinyl roll-up 10x10 square checkered International Checkers board
)1 vinyl roll-up 19x19 square grid Go board
)1 Artscow large doormat printed with 12x12 square checkered Canadian Checkers board
)1 Artscow plate mat printed with 13x13 Hex board
)1 Artscow plate mat printed with The Game of Y board
)1 Artscow plate mat printed with 12x14 square checkered Epaminondas board
)1 Artscow plate mat printed with 8-hex per side Havannah board
)1 Artscow plate mat printed with Chase board

)2 Staunton wooden Chess sets, light and dark wood finish, King is 3" tall with 1.125" base, extra Queens included
)80 1.25" wooden Checkers, 40 each of light and dark finish
)100 1.5" wooden Bottle Topps discs, natural finish
)181 black Go stones, 20-21mm diameter
)180 white Go stones, 20-21mm diameter
)100 red glass stones, 19-21mm diameter
)32 wooden 16mm six-sided dice, 16 each of light and dark finish

)1 12" x 24" duffel bag
)1 folder to hold printed rules for all the games on this GeekList

The important thing to know about this set is that though it is intended to travel, it is not intended to be miniature. The components and boards, while not huge, are not tiny. I have large hands and don't think I should need a microscope to play a game. Also, I am not striving for an absolute fewest necessary boards or pieces; if that were important, I would just play games by scratching them in the dirt. Some games really benefit from having their own dedicated board, and there is quite a lot of room in the duffel bag.

Note: The composition of this set has changed since the taking of some of the pictures below, so you may see pieces or boards that have since been swapped out for something else.

One of the better known games that can be played on a checkerboard; this one doesn't require any more pieces than an ordinary checker set.

The Bottle Topps discs come in handy for making the court in the center of the board. The checkers can simply land on top of them while in the court.

This is why it's nice to have 2 matching Chess sets. Here I used two queens and three bishops of each color.

An ordinary Chess set can be used for playing Arimaa, but how do you mark the muddy spots? Stick some wooden discs on those squares.

Here I've used the wooden discs to block off the excess portion of the board, and to make extra squares on either side.

Blocking off the unused portion of the board with discs. The "basketball" is an extra checker stacked on top of another.

Here is the two-player setup, with discs blocking the unused squares of the board. Originally I was going to keep four colors of checkers in order to support four players for this, but decided I wasn't likely to use it and didn't need that many checkers for any other game.

The original Ministers Chess pieces were bigger than I would like for this set, especially considering I need to keep two sets to accommodate other games and need to squeeze them all into a portable case. These sets were just the right size (3" king) and because there's two of them, I still have the right pieces to play Ministers.

The Courtyard board is nice, but the pieces that came with it are huge and not very useful for other games. And the plastic wall that went in the center was completely unnecessary. So here I've made some obvious substitutions from the two chess sets: King for a King, Knights for Guards, and Pawns for Serfs.

This was one of the first reasons I wanted to keep more checkers on hand, and with the Courtyard board, it's easy to just imagine that small center as being like the rest of the checkered board. Now if I could find a 12x12 folding board, I could play Canadian Checkers.

Here I've used checkers for the Archers, but I could just as easily have chosen some Chess pieces. For the arrows I like to use wooden discs--they're big enough that they make it obvious what portions of the board have already been used, and there's enough of them.

I considered printing checkerboards on Artscow plate mats, which roll up tighter than their doormats, but then the pieces would need to be smaller, and I don't want to go that small for this kit. My fingers are big and I want the set to be comfortable for a couple of old farts to play and for onlookers to be able to see what's going on from a distance. So, I patterned this one after old homemade boards that I see on eBay regularly, only it's oriented so that the "pockets" at either end are to the side instead of between the players.

Though I like Camelot and Inside Moves pieces, I want to save space and use existing pieces, as I've done here with some from my two chess sets. But the Camelot board is unique, and I'm struggling to find a way to make it a part of this set with shared components. For now I've just got an Inside Moves board tucked in with the others. One possibility: roll-up battlemats with squares on one side, hexes on the other. Perhaps I could mark one up for Camelot and still use it for other games.

UPDATE: I'm working on a design for an Artscow small doormat for this, and will use this set's chess pieces with it.

Pente can obviously be played with a Go set. I have a roll-up Pente board that I really like (the edition pictured) and considered using that as this set's Go board and buying extra glass stones, which could also allow me to squeeze larger games onto Artscow plate mats, but then I'd want smaller checkers and chess pieces too, and before you know it I would have a miniature game kit. That's not what I want. Besides, nestorgames already makes those!

Hex is a real classic, and the Artscow plate mat is the right size to make a board for use with this set's Go stones. Several of these mats can easily be rolled up into a chess quiver bag.
