Geekway has grown! I've been coming now for a little over 4 years adn in that time it has well over doubled in size. I remember coming the first time, introducing myself to Chris Darden and Jay Moore, explaining I was coming because my in-laws lived in town, but couldn't see myself getting a hotel to come to the convention. Well, 4 years later, my in-laws moved to Wisconsin, but I'm still showing up to Geekway and got a hotel for this wonderful time in the Arched City (I think I might've maded that Arched City thing up).

I tried to take pictures of every game I participated in, but since I played so much, that would be just too long of a list for here. What I'll do though is list my favorite experiences, maybe not even in order, and show you some pictures. I'll also try to tell you about some of the new to me games and what I thought of them, while I'm sure there will be some older games that creep on the list. Thanks to the whole Geekway team and the sponsors like Miniature Market & Game Nite for making a great convention!

Here are my previous Geekway adventures:

Geekway to the West - Round 2!

Since my in-laws had moved over the summer, about January I started hunting around here in Indy for someone to travel to St. Louis with me and split a room. It didn't work out for anyone to plan that far ahead, so I contacted some people in St. Louis, hoping they'd know of someone looking, and was put in touch with Andrew Tullsen of Print and Play Productions. We agreed to get a room together, which despite never meeting before he and his friend Peter walked into the hotel room with me, worked out very great. Both of them were great roommates to have, we had dinner together one night, and got Starbucks together the first morning.

Because of his duties running the P&P table, I wasn't able to game that much with Andrew & Peter, but late on Friday night I did snag a game of Flick Wars with him, a prototype of his own that should be coming out sometime this year. I was extremely impressed with his products and look forward to seeing Flick Wars on the market and very likely in my hands!

Here we are playing. Andrew is the guy measuring out if he can destroy the ship. He and I teamed up against Robbie & Brian to get the victory.

Within the past two weeks, Patrick and Julia decided to join me for Geekway, which was great! We carpooled out, they dropped me off at the hotel and went to the place they were staying, then they were back by 7:30 the next morning and ready to go. After a quick trip to Miniature Market, we pulled this game out and were taught how to play by Scott. Overall, I was just okay with the game, but Patrick and Julia seemed to really enjoy it. They ended buying it at Miniature Market that day I believe. Scott, like all good teachers, was cursed to lose.

By this time on Thursday, I had hooked up with both Steve and Brian, who along with Marc are part of my "Geekway Buddies" and have become friends over the past 4 years. Steve had downloaded the Escape soundtrack, he taught us the game, and we played twice. Game 1 we lost about immediately. Game 2 went much better and we came back with all the jewels and the win. I was so/so with the game, but would like to try it with a few more of the advanced rules I understand are in the box. Thankfully I'll have a chance, as this was a play and win copy that I received on Sunday! For some reason this picture is funny to me.

I played this 3 times with James over the weekend. First with him and a couple of his buddies on Thursday and then again on Sunday morning with Brian and Celina. The game grew on me with each play. The first game with James on Thursday we just got slaughtered by Loki and quickly lost the game, but the game itself seemed to take quite awhile. Then on Sunday though, against Magneto, we played very quickly, won both games relatively easy, which made it much more fun for me as it then became a competitive game. It was cool playing this with James, I appreciate him teaching me, and hope I get to game with him some more next year.

I've now played both this and the DC Deck Building Game and this one is way better in my opinion. The theme fits more appropriately, there is less luck, there is just more to be had in this game.

Dave was kind enough to teach this to me on Thursday evening and even wait while I went to the Thursday night raffle. I've got to say, I just wasn't impressed with this game. I've heard good things, specifically from the Secret Cabal podcast, but for me this game fell completely flat. Perhaps it was because we were playing with two players, perhaps because of the big break in the middle, I don't know why exactly but for me this was the one real dud of the convention and I even got the win.

Finally! After probably 9 years of wanting to try this game, I got the chance. Thanks to Matt for teaching the game. I also got a chance to play with DJ, who I've talked to in the past at Geekways, but never had gamed with. This sucker is a brain burner for sure and does play quite long, which I think is why it was so quickly nixed in my area of the gaming world. Despite my extremely poor showing and not really understanding the strategy in the game, I enjoyed myself. However, I wonder if the length, the theme, and the depth of the game will end up keeping me away from it. I know I'm not going to look to buy it, but I do think I'd consider playing it again at a convention if the opportunity arose. This was my final game of Thursday night, wrapping up around 12:15, so I went to bed.

Friday morning, after a Chai Tea run and a FaceTime conversation with the family, I went back to the library and pulled out this beautiful game to learn. While I was reading the rules, Mike (I'm pretty sure that is who it was) offered to teach me and then I was joined by Marshall, Patrick, and Julia. Mike decided not to play, with 5 of us, but still taught, which is something that I think is so cool about the boardgaming hobby and the nice people in it.

I loved this game! So much so, that I immediately got online and wanted to purchase it from Miniature Market. They were out of stock though! Oh well, instead I played it three times over the course of the convention, didn't win a single time (I don't count a tie as a win - I don't like sharing and rejoicing in victory with someone unless it is Dune). On Sunday, before we left, Patrick wanted to make one last run to Miniature Market and what do you know, they had ordered all the play and wins they could get their hands on including this one! I quickly snagged up one of the 6 copies on the table and was glad I did, because they were all gone before I left the store.

This game has nothing to do with betting. It really doesn't have anything to do with Las Vegas. It really is quite simple and fun though. Marshall taught us all how to play this after Ginkgopolis on Friday and we were joined by Shalee. I felt like I should've won with all my big bills, but Shalee got a whole lot of little ones and took the victory. Just a quick filler game and one I'd be fine owning, but I am not going to seek it out.

This is the first game on the list that I played which wasn't new to me at Geekway, but I had to talk about it. I'd just picked up Humanity's Shadow the day before and hadn't even had a chance to implement it into my decks. For some reason, it is so much easier for me to deck build with the cards in my hand. A big thanks to Justin and Michael for organizing and running the 4 round swiss. I had a great time!

Round 1
Was against Michael himself. I played as the runner first and my Gabe handled his HB Fast Advance very quickly, not letting him get an agenda scored. The next game was my Jinteki against his own version of Gabe. He had scored 2 points, but I was able to advance 5 points worth of Agendas. I then placed 3 tokens on a June bug, he was forced to run, and was flat-lined.

Round 2
Saw me matched up against Paul, who I'd played Eclipse with the day before. He is a really great guy, has a game called Quicksilver coming out soon, and I really had a good time talking with him. Game 1 I was able to lock him down and prevent his HB from getting going, though it was a really close game and a fun game. Next he was running Noise and was really surprised when he drew up to a 6 card hand, rushed my June Bug, then was immediately flat-lined by a Neural EMP.

Round 3
This time I faced off against Justin, who said he'd only played Netrunner for the whole weekend thus far. Which is really impressive to me. He was also running HB (see a theme here?) and Gabe. I mulligan'ed my first hand, then drew into 3 agendas. I did my best with this, but his first run on turn one also scored another agenda from my R&D, and I knew it was going to be a matter of time and it was. We then switched it up and like Gabe had been doing all day, I was able to lock down HB and get the win and the match.

Round 4
I was matched up against Charlie in the final game. I had 16 prestige and he had 14 going in. Finally, I ran up against something other than HB, he was playing Weyland. Things were going pretty well, until I made a stupid mistake. I'd ran into a Snare early in the game. I then went into a Neural Katana, but then went through it, and got hit by yet another Snare to be flatlined. Very unique deck. We then played his Kate against my Jinteki and I was able to get the win, but not before he'd scored 5 points, 1 of those off a first turn Noteriety, so I lost the match. I was hoping I had enough match points with my early play, to get the victory, which after adding it up I turns out I did just barely, sneaking out the tourney win over Charlie with a 67-66 win. Thanks to Geekway for the cool Descent 2.0 game as prize support.

Alan, the designer himself, taught us this late on Friday night. I understand it is going to come out really soon and I think it will end up doing pretty well among the Euro crowd. It does have a unique theme, it has a lot of variety in the cards, and plenty of strategy. I thought I was doing very poorly early on, especially because I was low on money, but after several rounds of taking the 1pt spot on the board and then getting a bonus point whenever a vistor came, I quickly took the lead and fulfilled an order for the win. This is another Play to Win that I walked away with, so thanks Alan for the donation!

This game is just cool. I'm looking forward to my daughter getting slightly older to do better and playing it. I played it first thing on Saturday morning, before our scheduled Dune game. We played it twice actually and had a good time laughing with Stephen and Jeremy each time any of us were "that" close to a goal and then lost our magnet!

For the second year in a row we scheduled this game for Saturday morning. This is such an epic game and one that really does give a fun and exciting narrative. Doesn't hurt that Celina's copy of the game is so cool. I played the Guild this year and was rolling in the money early and often. I even tried bluffing people twice with treachery cards only to be called on it right away. The first worm didn't show until turn 6 of the game and when it did, Steve joined Marc and I in an alliance against Celina & Brian, while Becky who was playing the Bene Gesserit stayed alone. We had another opportunity in turn 9 to switch alliances, but with the storm over Arraken we decided to wait a turn, as nobody could get the win in Turn 9. Turn 10 produced another worm, Marc and I dropped Steve (he really wasn't helping the alliance anyways) and then the turn began. Becky, for some reason, left Arraken leaving Brian alone in there. Both Marc and I decided we'd take the chance that she incorrectly chose the round of the win, so I attacked Brian and took the strong hold and the game with Marc! Turns out Becky had chosen the Guild to win in turn 9, not turn 10.

Marc - Fremen
Brian - Emporer
Celina - Harkonnen
Becky - Bene Gesserit
Steve - Atriedes
Adam - Guild

I was supposed to play War of the Ring on Saturday night at 8, so was looking for something to fill the small gap of time before, which turned out to be this game. This isn't Tichu by any means, but it is extremely simple and one I can see how this will do well in big box stores. I learned the rules in all of one minute. It played really quick. I can't say it played awesome, but it what fun with Marc & Brian.

I missed some regular Geekway events for me this year, such as playing War of the Ring with Andy, enjoying a game of Diamond's Club with Joe, or even playing in the Crokinole tourney. However, I did get hooked up with Adam, Larry, Andrew, and Steven this year to play our second game of Chaos in the Old World. We added the Horned Rats this time and had a very enjoyable time. The game came down to the very end with both Andrew and I finishing on the dials and Steven and Larry crossing the 50 point line and 5 places being ruined. I pulled out the tie-breaker as having more points than Andrew. I really love this game and just have scheduled a trade for it.

Adam - Dial Victory 44 pts
Andrew - Dial Finished 26 pts
Steven - 51 pts
Larry - 50 pts
Adam - 44 pts

Without a doubt, the most popular game of the convention. I believe there was only one play and win copy at the convention, yet I saw at one time four games of it going side by side. It was difficult to get in a play, but finally on Sunday morning I snagged a position in a 5 player game with Josh, Bruce, Jerry, and Wes. Josh, who had only played once before, did a really good job teaching and we began. Boy, did I really screw myself early by hiding in a corner and not text to optimal terrain. Jerry ended up just running away with the game, as he was able to quickly get his Nomads main ability going under the castle and quickly out pace everyone else. I really do want to try this game again, perhaps as someone different than the halflings, and see what else I can find within it.
