This con is just plain fun. It's the perfect mix of well-run and organized, and informal game playing. The growth in attendance has been amazing - last year the extra ballroom seemed almost indulgent. This year, it was an absolute necessity by Thursday noon.

It was, as always, great to see everybody. Fortunately or unfortunately, I didn't take notes on the outcomes of my games played, but here's my best recollection.

I've wanted to play this since I got my copy last fall. 5 minutes into getting to Geekway, Matt, DJ and Joel show up at registration, and then Chester walks up with a copy in hand and everybody agrees it's a perfect start.

Interesting game, though I was terrible at it. It was the first game for Matt and I, and the others have played at least once. Loved the growing Victory Requirement. I thought I played to a couple of basic strategies, neither of which seemed to have any positive effect. I clearly need to play more to understand how to position oneself.

Joel was a wonder-building king, but his VR got high enough that Chester got the best by playing a diamond strategy and keeping his VR low. Nice win for Chester!

Played this for my first time. 6p game - lots of random pounding. Came in second to Joel's first. Fun little game.

Checking out the play-and-win titles and Andy asked if I knew TH. I had played several times on SlothNinja's excellent site, so the two of us and Matt got it out.

It was relatively close thru two scoring rounds, and then Andy struck for like 10 or 11 pts in Round 3. Matt then came back with just as dominant a fourth round to win handily. Andy was a clear second, and I ate a lot of dust.

This is such a unique game, IMO. Tight, thematic, interesting mechanisms. Love it.

The highlight of my weekend, performance-wise. Matt and I have played this several times over the years, and it's a favorite. A "long" game that has a lot of moving parts, they all fit together so beautifully, and the game doesn't drag, even at the end.

DJ had been wanting to play this one for a long time, and Chester hadn't played in several years. Our fifth was pre-occupied, and just as we were deciding to try it with 4p, Adam walks up and is excited to get a chance to finally try this one. Are cons great or what?

I was able to ride my disgust with square tomatoes to the winner's circle, scoring in every region and winning several. I don't know how much the luck of which cards get turned up in which regions affects one's ability to be successful in the game, but it felt like I was swimming with the current, not against it.

Second year in a row playing this one on Thursday night at Geekway - hopefully a tradition has been born.

One of two games that were being played everywhere all weekend. Matt came having read the rules and prepared to teach, but we were one player short and a nice young lady (sorry, didn't take notes) asked if she could play, and offered to teach.

Definitely want to play this one more. We played with 4p and I'm sure different player numbers play very differently. I got a skull at initialization and put it on the wheel for a long ride. I also scored another skull, which were most of my points in a last place finish. Matt won, John edging me out and our teacher coming in 2nd. Fun one!

My top priority for getting played at Geekway. In a continuing positive trend, we were one player short of 5 when somebody showed up, asked to play, and offered to teach. Sweet!

Definitely an interesting game, but I think we played to passively. I've read posts where people talk about the obvious way to go being exactly what we did - it wasn't clear when to go after somebody else to your own advantage.

That said, I can't wait to play more. I think once the board and the mechanics become familiar, the game will be very intense. It felt like it would be a game that would build up, but it moved very fast.

John won in the final turn by winning a defensive war for his final point.

Fun little game of rolling dice and trying to control areas, er, casinos. Took about 1 minute to read the rules, and 20 minutes to play a 4p game. I managed to win this one, which rounded it out as a perfect, light package.

John, Matt and I learned this one to close out Friday night - I've been wanting to try it for a long time. It took longer than it should to learn, and it was a bit underwhelming with 3p. Definitely want to play with 4 or 5, and definitely want to get the expansion laws.

I really liked the placement mechanism. I don't think the war placements work that well with 3p, and with as open as it was, there was never a need to play on your own castle.

We used a library copy and we broke the shrink on it. I mention this for two reasons - one, it shows the level of service the Geekway team puts forward, even putting their unopened copies up for use in the library, and two, it's funny how over-produced the game is. I'd prefer over-produce than under I suppose, but we had a good chuckle about what seemed to be duplicate pieces and stickers that didn't seem to have an obvious purpose.

Matt and I attempted to defend our 2012 crown, but lost out after winning our first two matches. I won't recount in detail our losing match, but I do remember Matt saying, "You didn't just do that!" after one particular shot of mine.

If you weren't playing Tzolk'in, you were playing this one. It was everywhere. We were fortunate that as we were setting up, a fourth player showed up and volunteered to play and teach. He did a great job teaching, though there's a lot to take in. It seemed like the game would be over before it began as we played the first round - just didn't seem like there would be that much one could get done in a round, and there are only six rounds. Needless to say, as the rounds progressed, that changed, and lots happened. I wasn't all that enthralled at first, but was really enjoying my mediocre play as the game went on. Hope to play this one many times.

Another one I really wanted to try. Relatively easy to learn, and a very tight game. Plays quickly. Need to play a couple more times to learn how to maneuver for scoring well. The dynamic where you constantly play the 3 cards you don't play out of the four you hold really grew on me as the game continued. A new playing partner named OJ won, I came in second, Matt third, and OJ's friend Bledsoe came in fourth.

Finally, Saturday night Chaddyboy insisted that he was done learning new games, which was good for all of us. We played the Sahara map for Age of Steam. Every time I play AoS, I am reminded what a fabulous game it is. The Sahara map was absolutely brutal, and Chad ran circles around Matt and I, while Chaddyboy came in second.
