My first taste of Academy Games was Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear.
I thought it was an okay game, but not for me. So I tended to stay away from further Acamedy Games offerings, until I hit upon 1812: The Invasion of Canada. That one is now a favorite of mine.

The original edition of Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage.
This was not only my first Avalon Hill experience: it was also the second "real" wargame I ever played.
One of the masterpieces in my collection.

My first game from them: The Hell of Stalingrad.
(Yes, I came into contact with Clash of Arms late in my wargaming career...)

It's very chaotic, but fun! The Hell of Stalingrad and its sister game The Fires of Midway find their way to the gaming table rather regularly.

Ah, the very first true wargame I ever played: Bobby Lee.
Even today, two decades later, I'm still in awe whenever I look at that box. I have kept something of that tingling feeling of a door into a new world being opened...
Bobby Lee is a genuine classic, and one that, unfortunately, I don't get to play often enough.

I didn't run into Decision Games until I received the second edition of RAF for Christmas a few years past. Oh boy. I spent many sleepless nights flying through the skies of Britain...

Since then I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of D-Day at Omaha Beach, to no avail. (Yes, I have preordered the reprint!)

I wasn't thrilled by the game, but it was my second foray into the world of CDGs, and I had to admit that I was hooked on that game mechanism.

Solid game, but it doesn't come close to replacing Combat Commander for me.

My first shot at Worthington Games was Forged in Fire.
The game didn't leave a mark: I've only played it once. But it didn't prevent me from really digging some of their other titles, like Band of Brothers and Hold the Line.

The Civil War, followed soon by Sixth Fleet. Of my first ten or twelve wargames, half were VG.

Great War at Sea: The Mediterranean. Probably? I was huge into APL back in the day. At one point, I was fully caught up in GWAS, PG, Eagles of the Empire the stand-alones, and even their "Euros."

Then I sold it all.

I won't count Diplomacy from Games Research Inc. This was the first game I bought from SPI. It was a variant of Empires of the Middle Ages by the same company. It was not well done, but it did introduce me to the hobby.

Who likes obscure? I do! This was a great little semi-DTP outfit back when I was in college. I was a regular customer; I think I started with Montcalm & Wolfe but my favorite (granted, not a wargame) is Race for Space, which does a great job of putting you in the place of a space program director. It's my perfect game: You don't control anything, you can only influence.
