While many expansions actually detract from the original game, there are a select few which propel a game beyond its initial potential and create an amalgamation of beauty.

This is a list of ideas, ideas for would-be expansions that possess this ability to elevate the base game into something that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Straightforward ideas such as "More cards, maps, miniatures" don't belong here. I'm looking for something special and unique.

A dexterity based expansion which has you acting out the roll of bombardier. You hold a handful of dice (number and size depends on payload) and drop them from a couple feet above the table. The idea is to get them to settle/land in targets displayed on a foldout mounted map depicting a European factory/city.

Carcassonne - The Crusades

This would be a standalone expansion featuring tiles depicting the Holy Land during the time period of the Crusades. You'd have Castles, Roads, Oasis, Military Camps, Minarets, and special holy sites. Holy sites would be a random set of tiles and each player would be given one randomly to start the game. They may place this tile instead of their normal tile on any turn.

Holy Sites would include:

-Church of the Holy Sepulchre
-Church of Anunciation
-The Garden Tomb
-Mount of Olives
-Dome of the Rock
-The Western Wall

There would also be a mechanic to represent sieges where players could manipulate Army meeples to lay siege to a city. Cities under siege would be worth less points at the end of the game.

The Invasion

This would be a large expansion nearly as big as the base game. A large set of non-uniform tiles would be included depicting various streets/alleys/interiors/courtyards of Jerusalem. Gameplay would consist of the Demon player rising from the depths and invading the city. Scenarios would consist of a mix of tower defense, rescuing civilians, counter-attacking, escort, liberating supplies, etc.

At least one scenario would combine tiles with the base game and have a mission with two separate and simultaneous parts going on at the same time (a 4 player game that is 2 v 2). One of the Human players would be playing a last stand above ground while his team-mate would be making a desparate push underground to close the gate to hell.

An expansion offering a campaign mode of territory control similar to Necromunda. Rules for building the maps (using some new tiles/terrain) based on the type of territory and the scenario. New equipment to seed the equipment deck depending on the scenario. New characters for both factions to help fill them out and offer real choices. Fully developed team rules integrated into the campaign so we can do 2v2 or 2on1 on the fly.

Escape: Raiders

This expansion offers a completely new way to play Escape; instead of a Coop where you are attempting to drop off Gems and leave the temple, it's now a team game where two teams of rivals compete to pick up Gems and get out of the temple before it collapses. There would be actions and treasure that allow you to hinder your opponent (Cut the rope bridge after you cross it, seriously impeding movement, attempt to hinder his progress when he's in your tile, steal the treasure out from under his nose).

A campaign mode where the status of your Firehouse carried over between missions. Experience would be gained, skills would expand, and encounters would get more unpredictable. Oh wait, this already exists.

A versus mode that let a team of Locusts face off against the COGs similar to multiplayer in the video game. I think I even drafted up some test rules for this in the variant forums shortly after the game came out.

This would feature new map tiles, a plethora of map/mission setups with varying goals, achievements, and new equipment.

Ticket to Ride: Concrete Jungle

Ticket to Ride meets Blade Runner. Noir-ish train lines slicing through huge swathes of vertical buildings plastered with decaying yet vibrant advertising.
