Below is my Top 10 list of games covering the battle of Borodino (aka the battle for Moscow as it was the last major offensive of Napoleon during the invasion of Russia) during the Napoleonic Wars. These are games that meet substantially all of the following criteria: (1) focuses on the battle of Borodino or the lead-up to the battle, including the overall campaign in Russia; (2) a wargame; (3) addresses the "theme" in an interesting or compelling manner that leaves the player with a better understanding of the battle of Borodino (and its various aspects); and (4) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

See also Top 10 Napoleon Bonaparte Games, Top 10 Strategic Napoleonic Games, Top 10 Battle of Waterloo Games, and Top 10 Naval Wargames of the Age of Sail and Shot for more games on this era.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

As always, thanks for reading and participating!

XXX rules are clearly the best one in the subject. The top quality of all and every component in this particular game makes this new 200th edition an absolute must for everygamer interested in Napoleonic Tactical Combat. Every month, day, minute and second awaiting this game has been highly rewarded.

Great system, highly polished rules, gorgeous components. Berg seems to be at his best when he doesn't get too carried away in details, and this game is (to me) the perfect compromise of complexity, playability, and historical flavor. The full game is large, but a lot of fun. The small redoubt scenario is a quick way to get going and learn the rules, even if it is very unbalanced in favor of the French. I'm certain to revisit this game in the future.

Excellent game. Complex yet easy to play once you get going. Good strategy and changing strategies. Highly recommended.

Includes Borodino 20:

If you know the first release of the 20 series (Waterloo) it is not necessary to say anything more. Same system applied to one of the most balanced battle of the whole Napoleonic era. Technically it finished as a draw but it was the end of the Grand Armeé and begun the famous French withdrawal. Not for grognards, best for easy players. Simply fantastic.

Very clever system thinking outside the traditional box. Area movement and large units make for historical strategies and excellent visual appeal. See it as what Napoleon's Last Battles would look like after 25 years of improving the game design state of the art. This was the best Borodino game for my money even with the original rules - good history in an amazingly compact package. With John Mundie's refit of the Eylau rules it's a gem - big battle, good history, small size, short rules, fast play.

Oh, and I love the (very slightly tongue-in-cheek) cover.

Same game system as Napoleon at Waterloo. The addition of redoubts and some river crossings, plus the extension of a battle that covers three days makes this a bit longer. The game can go in a big way to either player, so it has a good quality for replay. The mechanisms are pretty familiar to everyone, movement, zoc's, two hex range artillery. Combat tends to be push push, so losses are taken when you can't retreat. Low odds combats are necessary for early efforts in breaking defensive lines, encirclement, and flanking maneuvers make a big difference. It's fun and can be played in a social way in an evening without much trouble.

With the slight change to infantry fire at range two I like Volume II better than volume 1. Also because it features the Russians. My favourite Napoleonic battles are the ones where the French confront the Russians. Napoleon never had easy victories fighting them.

This volume also contains two of the 'biggies' - "Austerlitz" and "Borodino".

I still like playing with the original 'die' CAP system over the optional 'chit' system.

Another classic Kevin Zucker game, closely designed to the famous "NLB"-series (but slightly different to scale, which is 480m per hex with NLB). Both battles show the typical Zucker-approach to the Napoleonics: Command and control is another factor to watch!

Another great classic. You can fight every napoleonic campaigns from 1805 to 1815 and also a long campaign 1805-1815. Simple game system but very efficient. Die modifiers for leaders, commitment of the guard, terrain. Excitement garanty when you fight a major battle and a roll of "2" means victory and a "12" means disaster.

Best solitaire game I have ever owned. Play is engaging and intense. AI is challenging and gameplay is seemless and well designed so that AI moves do not bog the player down or require tedious recordkeeping. Components are incredible and the package is complete and comprehensive of all of Napolean's major campaigns - 11 of them on 7 mounted boards - very impressive! No need for expansions! I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys wargaming, and especially for anyone who has any level of interest in this time-period.
