Myself, James and Josh played this little Lego Dungeon Crawl.

Ratings:
Dev - 7
James - 6
Josh - 5

Concensus was that this game would be improved by running it as a campaign over a series of games.

Paul, Martin and I settled down for Puerto Rico.

I picked up the tile that gives you a bonus plantation each go (the Hacienda?) so very quickly built a large plantation and was able to get into coffee relatively early. Paul, started on Quarries and very quickly focused on a building strategy whereas Martin went for a diverse portfolio and the tile that gives you an income based on the number of types of goods you produce.

I was able to get a lot of points from shipping goods but was always cash poor and didn't get the buildings to capitalise on the points or shipping although I did manage to force Martin to hand back a lot of goods on a couple of occasions. Paul also managed to catch ups both a couple of times and it was his strategy that won the day.

Points to remember for next time: make sure you spend some time generating some type of income and keep an eye out for when the game approaches the end!

Final scores (positions) and ratings were:

Paul 54 (1)
Martin 47 (2)
Andrew B2 40 (3)

I also see that I've upped my rating in spite of losing

After the slowest ever journey to EGC (a lorry had shed its load at Malden Rushett), I finally arrived just in time to be offered a choice of Puerto Rico with other relative noobies or a game I had wanted to play for a long while - New Amsterdam - so the latter won out.

[Many thanks to both sets of players for playing a filler first to allow for my late arrival] - kind of like the old days at EGC where we waited for people we knew were coming but were, for some reason, running late.]

Andrew did a sterling job of explaining the rules to the three of us (two noobies and Phil), and we made a tentative start.

Key to the game is the auction of the available actions - three types (building, land, trade) which are randomly distributed in columns of three or two actions, some of which also will give you one or two coins. But here's the rub - you only get to bid once, in turn order, for a column of action tokens. If you are successful, you take the action tokens and the turn order token of the player who started the bid - this is also how turn order varies throughout the game. Clever. You can pay for your bid win any resource (coins, food, goods, furs), but of course, you need all those resources for other things too.

The game played slowly as we tried to reason what any column of action tokens was worth and tried to get out "engines" working to deliver us resources.

Andrew took an early lead but Steve had discovered what I think is a VERY strong strategy and towards the end caught him and slipped past him (which is odd, because that is what Andrew normally does to others when he plays! shake). Phil and I played for third place from early on in the game.

I do not think the game is as brain burning as some would say but like Bora Bora, I was left with an "OK, but nothing grabbed me" experience. Which is a pity - I managed to cancel my order of Bora Bora after my first play at EGC, but I have alreday paid for my copy of Nieuw Amsterdam which I collect next weekend

Overall; not a bad game, but nothing that made it stand out as a game I really want to play (unlike, say, The Castles of Burgundy)

But I will happily play again and see if my initial two thoughts (if you have a slow start you are screwed and the way to win is food then diversify and concentrate on buildings (which won the game for Steve)) shows that the game, for all its initial "points salad" feel, actually has a single strategy that will probably always win the game (much as I suspect that Rialto has after my only play).

Scores and ratings:

*Steve 80 (8)
Andrew-OO 74 (8)
Phil 68 (7)
*Jim 64 (5.5)

*New to player

[My initial rating is unlikely to go down and may well go up with further plays. It is the further plays that are in doubt.....]

After Lego Heroica, Dave and Gareth joined Josh, James and myself for a classic: Race for the Galaxy. This was new to both Josh and James. Being the nice chaps we are, we dropped them in at the deep end including the first expansion and totally messing up rules explanations. The scores were hardly unexpected as a result but everyone seemed to enjoy it none the less:

Scores:
Dev - 26
Dave - 37
Gareth - 25
James - 12
Josh - 12

Ratings:
Dev - 8
Dave - 10
Gareth - 7.5
James - 7
Josh - 7

Puerto Rico was followed up by a game of Finca and was new to me but familiar to everyone else.

I managed to get the first point of the game by virtue of being first player but Paul's Lemons helped him to pick up a couple of bonus tiles as well as being the first to complete one of each number. Martin, was able to pick up several mixed fruits and had an almost total monopoly on Blackcurrents? figs that Paul and I could never quite get to a point where we could force him to give them back.

Final scores and ratings were:

Paul 56
Martin 46
Andrew B2 36

Dave - 22/6
Gareth - 12/7
Josh - 11/0

Rating:
Dev - 7

We finished up with a game of Coloretto that was new to Gareth butr everyone else had played before.

Final scores were:

Andrew 26 *
Gareth 24
Jim 20
Paul 18
Martin 17

* We forgot to take ratings. blush

On another note, next time we play this, I'd quite like to try the alternative scoring - I think it would actually increase the opportunities to mess with each other.
