Below is my Top 10 list of games covering the Seven Years' War. These are games that meet substantially all of the following criteria: (1) focuses on the Seven Years' War; (2) can be strategic in scale or covering individual battles of the Seven Years' War; (3) primarily a wargame, but can address elements of the political, diplomatic and economic pressures associated with the Seven Years' War; (4) addresses the "theme" in an interesting or compelling manner that leaves the player with a better understanding of the Seven Years' War (and its various aspects); and (5) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

See also Top 10 Frederick the Great Games for more games on this topic.

For a complete listing of my Top 10 lists, see--MetaList: Nap's Top 10 Lists.

As always, thanks for reading and participating!

This is an outstanding game. Absolutely enthralling and a true epic, where your decisions back in 1757 will come back to haunt you (several hours later) in 1761. Be warned: it has a steep learning curve, but it's totally worth it.

Frederick the Great is always a gaming subject that grabs you on to the wargaming table. This game covers a lot of the aspects during the period without cumbersome rules. This game is a rare gem to 3W collection.

A good fast way to simulate the Seven Years War on a global scale. Ought to be expanded with scenarios for the War of the Austrian and Polish Succession.

My favorite wargame. In a mere twelve pages of rules and scenarios, Frank Davis designed the most realistic strategic-level game on 18th century warfare available. Nearly thirty years after the game's release, there is still not another game that holds a candle to it. That said, it also draws the most strongly held views, both positive and negative, of almost any other game. You cannot be an "18th Century Patton" in this game and expect to succeed. Battles are deliberate and slow in developing. This turns a lot of "panzer pushers" off. Plus, there is no denying the map is ugly. Try to get the AH version since it includes Joe Balkowski's simple rule which tied the number of Prussian losses to Frederick's capability to continue the war. A simple rule which added a lot to the historical accuracy of the game.

This game recaptured some of the feeling I had when I first got into European games some 10 years ago, a feeling that's been missing from all the repetitive and boring German games for a couple of years now- a sense of discovery, esotericism, and innovation. Friedrich is a brilliant, brilliant game and a masterpiece of design work- a more or less traditional historical wargame with a traditional card game to resolve combat. Simple enough, but the subtleties of design decisions are difficult to describe without being able to demonstrate the experiential realizations that you will come to during the game as you become aware of how it all fits together. Beautiful.

Excellent, tight, tense, block wargame about the 7 Years War. Worthington has outdone themselves with the gorgeous mounted map and counters. The battleboard and cards are also excellent. It doesn't get a '10' because the battleboard rules are just now getting fleshed out and there are no three or four player rules. Highly recommended.

Fun and playable period effort by GMT. Almost too standard with the combat factor, odds/CRT, roll die, fare that Grognards have done for half a century. But with a few twists to those old rules, the result provides a surprisingly miniatures feel, (approve!). Morale ratings that affect combat results, units going into column, frontages implied by stacking limits, are just some of the rules evoking that "toy soldiers" feel. I echo the sentiments on the gorgeous components! Battle scenarios at 5 turns allow complete games in an evening. Prussians seem to be generally superior, (hey wargamer buddy, wanna play the Austrians?), but I still think the game is fantastic.

Raising my rating after a recent play. Really is fun and playable!

Includes Prussia's Glory II:

I had a lot of fun running through a couple of scenarios of this game. Prague is a good one to start with, not too many units, and it gives you a chance to whet your teeth with a full-on frontal assault as the Prussians. Great looking game, with colorful units and maps. Once you get the hang of the rules it plays quite fast, certainly doable in an evening. I'll definitely be returning to this game in the future!

Low-quality production values, but interesting strategic treatment of a much neglected European War.

Quick playing game that covers the campaigns of Frederick well. Hit and run, War of Maneuver with decent solitaire potential.

History of Europe in a box, absolutely sublime. Even in its unfinished state it's unbelievable in scope and grandeur. The rules are as muddle as La Grand Guerre but the effort to understand it worth every second. Not just a wargame.

--Cheong Sang Eric Lai (Garfink)

The most ambitious empire-building game I've seen.

As many point out, the rules need some serious effort
to decipher. I've done this for the original (to my
own taste). Would like to put the same effort into
the EU 8/9 updated version.

All that said, the game has many many flaws beyond
just the rules. The historical basis for the original
game is not well executed in some places. It is very
unbalanced in the campaigns.

There are a lot of small 'war' scenarios, which play
out in a fairly short time frame. These are the way
to ease into this game, which is so much more than
a wargame.
