Welcome to this week's Game Chat League Amoeba discussion group!

If you found us randomly (via subscription, perhaps), you're welcome to join in with constructive conversation -- we're friendly symbiotes in real life, though vicious competitors at the game table. (Pound for pound, the amoeba is the most dangerous predator on earth!) Read the links above for more info. (If you're shy, just thumb the list so we can see who's stalking us :-) )

Current hosting rotation:

Eric
Carlos
Jevon
Jens
Joshua
Mikko
Doug
Larry

After a short move this week, I figured I'd focus the questions around moving and storage.

Have you moved in the last ten years? If so, did you pack your games or did a moving company pack them? Any horror stories?

How do you store your games? Do you use bookshelves? Stack them flat or on their side?

In addition, do you throw away your inserts, punchboards, expansion boxes, etc? Why or why not?

What factors into your consideration when you consider adding games to your collections. On the flip side, what factors do you take into consideration when you sell/trade a game away?

AND, just out of curiosity, what is everyone's favorite "transport" game? I'm going to leave this open for interpretation as to how one defines "transport," but this should involve the movement of cargo/passengers from one place to another.

Less games played this week as I didn't attend Thursday night gaming due to more focus on packing and moving. No game was played more than once either!

d10-7 Bora Bora 1
d10-8 The Castles of Burgundy 1
d10-7 Cosmic Encounter 1
d10-0 Factory Fun 1
d10-7 Fauna 1
d10-9 El Grande: König & Intrigant 1
d10-8 Himalaya 1
d10-6 Libertalia 1
d10-6 Seven Sisters 1
d10-6 Wyatt Earp 1
d10-7 Yedo 1

New to me:

Libertalia was new and was interesting as a faster version of Citadels...and possibly more interesting. Remains to be seen if this one sees much action in the group.

Seven Sisters was also new and was interesting but the jury is still out on the verdict. I always want to refer to this one as the Twisted Sisters...

Other comments:

I was hoping a couple of my friends would really enjoy Factory Fun. Alas, it was not to be...

Twas fun to play El Grande and Cosmic Encounter again!

After some quiet times, a more active week.

I played seven games of LotR: Deck-building game against my son and lost every single one of them. The first ten games I played, I won eight. Now, I've lost seven times in a row. Once I resigned - my son managed to grab two Moria Orcs on turn 1, which is so good that I could've resigned at that moment. No matter how well I play, he does better. I don't understand how he does it.

New York Central is good, the more I play it the more I like it.

_8_ 1x Preußische Ostbahn

0.5x 1860: Railways on the Isle of Wight

Saturday morning I taught 1860 to someone who really doesn't like rules-heavy games. I did not win any converts with that move. Last night's game session with Preußische Ostbahn was much more appropriate and indeed went over much better.

So PO was me and three new players. I myself hadn't played in over three years, so while I remembered the rules I had completely forgotten any strategy insights I had previously gained. I ended up with a money lead for most of the game, but I kept not buying shares and ended up getting dominated on income by my lefthand opponent. I lucked into a turn where I was able to run the NS (brown) out of cubes in such a way that it would never connect to two companies, and I eked out the victory. As with basically every time I play a Winsome game, I came away feeling like we had only scratched the surface.

A very light week with a 5p game of Pax Porfiriana being the most noteworthy event. I'm a little surprised that the game is causing so much of a stir here. At the end of the day it's just another iteration of the multiplayer conflict card game. Sure, it's attractively packaged (though not necessarily pretty) and it does try hard to avoid the usual free-for-all dogfight issues that plague the genre which is a nice change but on the other hand it takes a looong time to play out. We were all new or almost new to the game which certainly didn't help matters but even with an experienced group I'd be surprised to see it go much below the 90-120 minutes range.

Saturday started off with a game of Spaced Out (the new Kickstarter edition) which was an okay card game. I wouldn't rush to play it again, and I wouldn't run in fear, either. Next up was Pax Porfiriana, this time playing with a rule of which I was made aware last week (you can sell cards from your display). It was a money-happy game, the economy was rolling, alas, I was unable to stop another player from a command victory. Next up was Endeavor, which hadn't seen the table in some time. I like this game, and this game showed me why. There is a lot going on, a lot of ways to score points and a good amount of player interaction. I came in 2nd in this one.

Then I played my 1st full game of Tichu in quite some time (not my 1st time ever...I forgot 1/2 the sentence). Over the course of it, my team got either 9 or 11 bombs (I forget which) while the other team got 1. Still, we had to come from behind to get a victory. I'm thinking we played something else, my mind is blanking on it right now.

In the evening, I got together with a couple of friends, and we played 2 more games of Pax, one a teaching game, the other was all out. The same guy who won the AM game won both of them. I was in a great spot to get a loyalty win in the 2nd game, I just had no way of changing the government to Pax! There were 2 Federal troops out there, but they were both for Chihuahua, and thanks to some headlines and a depression, there were no Chihuahua enterprises out there! I love this game. The same 3 of us are getting together tonight, and while I think we're starting with Agricola, I suspect we'll get a game of Pax in, too.

Edit 1: Okay, the other Saturday game was Love Letter. I came from being the last one to get a cube to a 50/50 guess at winning...and lost.

Last night, another game of Pax. The same guy who one all 3 won again...this one was exciting and frustrating and came down to when the 3rd topple dropped. It dropped for him first, and he got a command win. If it had dropped after his turn, I was set up for a Revolution win. Very exciting and we're all loving the game. Then the 3 of us played Agricola. One of the other 2 had only played once, and the other maybe 10 times, while thanks to boiteajeux.net, I'm slowly improving after dozens of games. I took this one 54-45-28(?). A good game, and I was set up for the Braggart. I got 9 improvements out, and I think every one of them was a point scoring improvement, plus 9 points for the braggart to propel me to the win.

My favorite 18xx game for six players is two games of 1846 with three players each.

Just one game Monday night: High Frontier with Joe and Kevin. I own the game (and expansion) but had only played it once, back in 2011. On that occasion, I couldn't roll to save my life and only managed to verify that a lot of asteroids and moons were uninhabitable. I then lost interest because the rules seemed to keep changing.

Last night Kevin and Joe wanted to play, and I was happy to play it a second time. The game is dripping with theme, so the bad luck is expected. And Kevin knew the rules. Well, this time I could do no wrong. My first trip was to the Vesta area, and with my '1'-rated raygun, I claimed 4 of the 5 possible rocks in a single action (qualifying for the 7VP award and extra action for finding 3 V locations to boot.) I was as lucky in this game as I was unlucky the previous time.

In a previous comment on a different GCL GL, I said I don't tend to use the term "puzzlelike" to describe games, but this is a game that fits the bill. Just figuring out how to do anything (or how to get home after doing it) is a challenge. I read an article recently about how NASA technicians fixed various problems on spacecraft, and this feels just like that.
