This may, I attended my first atlanta game fest, and it definitely won't be my last. Atlanta game fest is a mini-con put on by a local gaming group, and this time it ran Thursday through Monday due to Memorial Day. I'm relatively new to hobby gaming, so this was my first ever board game convention. I thought it was well-run and lots of fun, and I would recommend anyone to check it out the next time it runs, which should be sometime in January. I had a great time, and I wanted to share some of the games I played and my quick thoughts

This was the first game I played on Thursday morning. It was a fun, quick tile laying game that had a bit of a 3d element, as you try to stack your tiles 2 and 3 High to allow the placement of huts, temples, and a third type of building whose name I forget. I enjoyed it, but apparently it's out of print, and it wasn't so great that I'd try hard to hunt it down or anything. Still, a good start to the fest!

This was the second game I played, and it's a pretty old one. It was described to me as poker with dice, and that's pretty much what it was. A light, quick game, but not really my thing, although it would work with almost anyone, gamer or not.

As the crowd started to pick up mid morning, this game came to the table. I'd played the original, and I think that this version is superior. Adding lots of strategy and even a very small amount of theme to the game. Like I did with the original though, I feel that this one runs too long for what it is, and I don't think I'll add it to my small collection.

As many in the hall broke for lunch, I decided to maximize my time and play through. I met up with another solo gamer who was interested in trying out some of Stephen Feld's games, and we settled on this. This was one of my favorites of the con, and I am still thinking about picking it up. Played great with 2, very strategic, and I can see it having great replay ability due to the different player boards. I can see how it might drag with 4, but for me, since my wife is my main gaming partner this one right now is at the top of my list for strategic games. Lots of fun!

Castles of burgundy ended my Thursday due to atlanta traffic and I headed home. The next morning, I arrived early determined to play as many games as I could, and with a few on my wish list, I dived right in. Oasis quickly came to the table. This is a bidding, route building, area control game. It was fun, but didn't really stand out to me. On to the next game!

This game was the first one I played that was in my try list this year. After watching it on tabletop, I felt I knew the rules pretty well. A light, fun game that would be east to teach to anyone. It's downfall with me is that it wouldn't play well with 2, so until my son is old enough to play games, this one will have to wait. As this one was wrapping up, I noticed a game one table over looking for a fourth, and it was one I'd had my eye on....

I had noticed this game one the shelf and it immediately caught my eye because my wife and I had traveled there 2 years ago and absolutely fell in love with the area. This is, to me at least, a medium weight pick up and deliver game with some mild similarities to ticket to ride. It's got a little bit of brain burn, and the board and components are beautiful. Based on plays, I'd say this was one of the hits of this con, and I really enjoyed it. I bought it soon after, and am happy to say that it plays great with 2 and my wife likes it as well. My favorite of the con!

This game came out next, and I guess it was ok, we had some rules difficulty, and no one had really played it much before, so it kind of dragged. I'd have to give this one another try before I had an opinion of it.

Afterwards. I finally got a crack at this one. It seemed very poplar at the con, and was hard to get a copy free to play. This one was on my try list, and it did not disappoint. Very thinky, with a neat mechanic, and lots of options. My only concerns are how well it plays with 2, and the length might keep it from the table at my house. By I'm keeping my eye on it!

I wanted to squeeze one last game into the weekend, and this one was it. I had heard good things, but was disappointed in the play. I can't really explain it, it just didn't seem like much fun to me, and I crossed it off my want list right away.
