I'll be traveling to Indianapolis from Michigan, and back home again, on Gen Con Thursday. I'll spend most of my time at the convention in the exhibition hall checking out all of the awesome new wares available.

And I'm going to be tweeting throughout the day with pics and info; if you're so inclined, go ahead and follow me on Twitter. My Twitter profile is @pkreynolds.

Now, this is not a ploy by me to gain Twitter followers. I don't tweet all that often, and I don't care about who or how many people are following me. I just wanted to try this whole "tweeting from a big event" thing that seems so popular with the kids these days. So if you want, follow me for the day and then unfollow me when I'm done. Or don't.

Anyway, this is a sort of Gen Con 2013 wish list - what I am hoping to see, buy and play at the convention. After I make it back from Indy, I will post a new list with my actual experiences - will I get to play, buy or see everything I wanted to? I'll have the new list posted within a couple of days of returning from Gen Con, probably before the convention ends on Sunday.

So come with me, weary gamer who for whatever reason can't make the journey to Gen Con, and experience it vicariously through the camera-eye of my smartphone!

Let's begin.

$10 fast card game about zombies? The card artwork looks great. I will probably pick up a copy if it's available.

I already own the Tempest version of this game. I might look at picking up the limited original Japanese version if it seems like something I'd ever get to the table (instead of the Tempest version, I mean).

There is a lot of buzz around this game. I'm not a big fan of train games but I feel like I need to at least check it out. I like the idea that it's basically a Dominion style deck builder with more of a focused theme to it. So we'll see. Hopefully I can get a demo before they sell out.

I'll be heading to the Asmodee booth first thing to hopefully snag a copy of my top want from Gen Con this year, Augustus.

But Asmodee always has a bunch of good stuff for sale at Gen Con, and there will probably be other games of interest to me there as well.

Bruno Faidutti is one of my favorite designers. I really like how most of his games include a lot of nastiness between players, but often you're not sure exactly who will receive your attack (as with the thief or assassin in Citadels). Mascarade sounds like a game I will really enjoy, so I'll probably grab a copy while at the Asmodee booth.

This SdJ nominee is my top purchase want out of Gen Con this year. It looks like it will be a good fit with my gaming groups. It's slated to go on sale at Gen Con and there will hopefully be a good supply available.

[EDIT] Apparently the U.S. release has gotten a rename - it's now Rise of Augustus instead of just plain Augustus. Alrighty then.

Disclaimer: I am a Days of Wonder fanboy. I will buy any big box game they release. It's been a couple of years since their last original board game release, which was the (I feel) under-appreciated Cargo Noir.

In my experience with this company at Gen Con, it's pretty rare for them to be running demos for upcoming games. They have generally only had already available stuff at the convention, as far as their big box game releases are concerned. So I'm pretty excited for the chance to check out their next game before it gets released in September.

Similar to the last few years, mega-publisher Fantasy Flight doesn't have anything that I'm particularly interested in this year. I think the last FFG game I bought that I was excited about was Isla Dorada, which isn't really an FFG game; they just published it in the U.S.

This isn't to say that I don't think FFG is a good company. Quite the contrary, I have a great deal of respect for them. It's just that their in-house game releases over the last few years have drifted into territories that aren't really in my wheelhouse.

I'm not big on two-player games, and they love them some LCGs with their monthly releases of card packs. I did buy the core box for the Star Wars card game, but mostly because I'm a Star Wars fan. I have no intentions to buy into the ongoing packs.

I'm also not a Cthulu fan, nor Warhammer, and they tend to have a load of releases for those licenses.

But, as always, I look forward to checking out their massive booth with the ridiculous towers of game boxes. Maybe something will surprise me this year.

I already own the Avalon Hill version of this game. I've been on the fence about picking up the recent FFG remake. I'm not sure I want to spend the money for a game I already have, despite the obvious upgrades in the visual component department that Fantasy Flight is sure to have made.

I figure if I have money left over after picking up the new stuff that I want, I might consider grabbing a copy of this as well.

They've been pumping out expansions and standalone sequels to Last Night and their other titles for awhile now. I'd love to see something new from them.

I'm a fan of the TV show, and Gale Force Nine has proven to me that they can take a TV license and make a solid game around it.

However, this might not be the Firefly game I'm looking for; I know that there are several other games based on the license in the works. I'm going to get a pretty good look at this game in action at Gen Con before I'll pull the trigger on a purchase, I think.

[UPDATE] Anthony snagged one of the last few tickets to a demo event for this game and alerted me to the fact that there were a couple still available, so I bought one as well. I'm not sure if I want to take time away from the exhibit hall on the only day I'll be at Gen Con this year, but the ticket was only $2 and it is a game I am interested in, plus they'll be giving out promo cards to attendees.

I'm really not a fan of Game Salute, mostly for their upcoming "game" based on one of my favorite movies of all time, "The Princess Bride." But, there is one game I am strongly considering picking up based on word of mouth, and that is:

I want to get a demo first, though. I watched a rules explanation video that I don't think really did a good job of capturing the feel of playing the game (to be fair, that's sometimes hard to do when you're just going through how to play a game).

Iello has one of the bigger games of the past couple of years that I've managed thus far to avoid purchasing, King of Tokyo. Mostly I haven't bought a copy because it tends to sell out and remain out of stock for large periods of time, but also because I have a couple of regular gaming friends who own copies, so I get to play it frequently enough that I haven't really felt a huge need to add it to the collection yet.

When this game was first announced it had my immediate interest. First because in the past few years the French game designers have been knocking it out of the park as far as I am concerned. Secondly, while I am not familiar with either of the designers of The Phantom Society, I am a big fan of the artist Naïade (Seasons, Tokaido). Finally, games published by Fun Forge have really impressed me in the past.

So, The Phantom Society was immediately on my radar; I wanted to learn more. And when more details eventually arrived, my interest level has dropped off. I'm not really sure that there is much of a game here. This is a deduction game, but it seems like it's still mostly more of an "educated guessing" game.

I've watched a couple of videos for the game, and although it all looks really nice, component-wise, I think that this is one I'll need to have a demo of before I'm convinced that it's going to really work well enough to sustain multiple plays.

I want to get a demo or at least a look at this game in play. It's got some similarities to City of Remnants (different factions fighting for control of a city). City of Remnants left me kind of cold - it's a good game but it felt to me like it was trying too hard to be too many different types of game. It's a city builder, with area control, dice-based combat and deck building. Some of the mechanics, especially the combat, just didn't really feel very compelling to me. I probably need a couple more plays before really deciding if I like it or not though.

If it looks like theme will rise about mechanics (which is the opposite of what I felt about City of Remnants (where, to me at least, the mechanics seemed to be emphasized over theme) then this might be a game I'd want to own.

I've been a fan of Slugfest for years. I'll still break out Kung Fu Fighting pretty regularly, and it's always a blast. They've been riding the Red Dragon Inn train for the last several years, though, with not a whole lot of new titles. I bought the first two Red Dragon games, skipped the gambling card game, the third Red Dragon Inn and the extra character mini-decks they've released. This year they've got a Kickstarter running for a fourth Red Dragon game. Red Dragon Inn is starting to feel a bit like Munchkin, although it hasn't yet gotten anywhere near that level of complete market over-saturation yet.

But... I'm ready for something new and innovative from the Slugfest guys. Looking forward to seeing what they have at their booth this year.

I like Red Dragon Inn, even though it's really just a slightly altered version of the same formula of two of their earlier titles, Kung Fu Fighting and En Garde. Red Dragon Inn stirred up the formula by giving players unique character decks with different strengths and weaknesses, as well as a second health track (intoxication level) to manage. And on top of that, the theme of a party of adventurers celebrating after their dungeon run by gambling, drinking and brawling in a tavern is pretty cool.

But, like I said, the formula is wearing thin after three outings, and this is a game I never want to play with more than four people (it runs way too long with more than that). Sure, having different characters and whatnot is nice, but I've got eight already from the first two games, which I think is more than enough.

Still, I will look at this one and see if they've added anything that will make me reconsider my stance on this series.
