I love card games. I particularly love card games that work their magic with just a few suits and numbers, rather than hundreds of individual card powers.

I got to wondering which games would have won the 'traditional' card game of the year award, if such a thing had existed over the past couple of decades.

What do I mean by a 'traditional' card game? Two main things come to mind:

- the cards themselves don't have properties much more complicated than a suit, a number and maybe a separate scoring value.

- there aren't many components to speak of other than a deck of cards (obviously) and maybe some scoring chips or a scoreboard.

That is, the kind of game that could feasibly be approximated with a standard deck or at least a Rage/Sticheln deck.

Scanning through past years, I identified some contenders but also a lot of blurred lines. Here are some preliminary suggestions going back to 1993.

I'd be interested to hear discussion of whether these choices should or shouldn't qualify and alternative nominations. If there's enough interest, maybe I'll even hold a vote!

Sticheln turns trick-taking inside-out, and it's brilliant.

En Garde is an impressive fencing simulation from 5 sets of 1-5.

There's no separate game entry for Mu on its own, but it's a challenging 5-player variable-partnership trick-taker that would be a strong contender any year.

Condottiere is probably disqualified by having a board, though it's really not much more than a score track.

The Bottle Imp is a great 3p trick-taker with an unusually strong theme.

The Great Dalmuti is a proprietary deck reimplementation of a genuinely traditional game.

Foppen is another trick-taker, this one by Friedemann Friese.

I'm a bit torn about this one. It's just two decks of numbered cards plus some chips, but is it really a card game when nothing gets dealt?

Bohnanza - are the cards too complicated?

Turn the Tide, Nyet! and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde all seem like contenders.

A good year for Mr Dorra!

Into a few years of seeming Knizia domination, though I haven't actually played this one.

Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper - clearly tradtional-inspired, but are there too many special-action cards?

Other possibles: Bargain Hunter, David & Goliath, Cosmic Eidex

Lost Cities has proved one of the most enduring card games of its era - one of several Kosmos 2p entries.

Schotten Totten is better known in its 2000 incarnation. Why are these two separate database entries again?

Frank's Zoo is another climbing game, though with somewhat complex relationships between the cards.

Mamma Mia! and Money! are good but borderline.

If Schotten-Totten didn't win 1999, then Battle Line would be a shoo-in for 2000, particularly the non-tactics-cards version.

Meuterer almost certainly goes too far in packing a board game into a deck of cards to qualify here.

I don't know Ivanhoe or Four Dragons but they looked like possible nominees.

Balloon Cup maybe?

I have seen people play The Resistance with a deck of cards, is that enough for it to qualify?

Triumvirate is a clever 2p trick-taker.

Chronicle has special powers but also suits, numbers and trick-taking.

Court of the Medici is a twist on Casino and other traditional fishing games.

Is 8 powers too many? You'll have them memorised within a couple of rounds, and then it could be played with a standard deck.

The same probably goes for Coup.

Divinare just has suits, no numbers, but also a board of sorts.
