Today is Canada Day.
Today, Canada celebrates the anniversary of the 1867 signing of the Constitution Act, which united three colonies into a single country called Canada.

For many Canadians, the official start of the Summer is a day filled with family, fun, games, BBQ and fireworks.

Question #1
What is your favourite single day of the year?

This week I finally jumped on the Love Letter wagon, and boy are my girls happy I did. This one game has been played 2,3, and 4 players all weekend long. Both with and with out me involved. Even my wife liked it. A new family favorite for sure, and I thank all of you for making it a higher priority for me to buy just w/ your enthusiasm.

Also played w/ my kids this week, Hamsterrolle, one of my favorites w/ people of any age. I lost badly.

Then we also played the game of Enchanted Forest that I mentioned in last weeks GCL, I still can remember the placement of each tree on the board.

And w/ my other gaming groups I had the chance to teach a friend Android: Netrunner with the basic set. I hadn't used those decks in a long time, they felt very limited. Even so I love teaching that game, it rekindles the excitement as I watch them go through the agony of deciding to run or not.

We also played a game of Eclipse, it was only my 2nd time playing and it had been 6 months, I was happy w/ my second place score of 33. I did lock a new guy out in the beginning, it was mean but he had said he played it on his Ipad a few times so I figured he was more experienced than I and he would know how to cope. He didn't and it kind of ruined the fun for him, for that I felt bad.

Finally I did a solitaire play of Thunderstone: Dragonspire, I don't normally like playing by myself but I was just itching for a game and my wife wanted to craft and my kids were in bed. The circumstances were just right for it to be a lot of fun.

Liar's dice x4. We watched Pirates of the Caribbean 2, which the boys enjoyed, and I showed them the Liar's Dice/Pirate's Dice game that is actually played in the movie (Not sure if that was put there just for a product tie in or not.) and they were interested to play it. They liked it so much we are still playing it a couple of days later.

Libertalia x2. I took the opportunity to introduce another pirate game that I wanted to try (and I'm sure the guy on the cover is modeled after Geoffrey Rush's Capt. Barbossa). They enjoyed this enough to request it again so that is two immediate hits. I guess I give it a 7--even though you have 9 cards in a hand there are often only 1 or 2 characters that make sense to play at each point so it feels a bit constrained to me. (Although it is possible I am focusing too much on their special abilities and not on their rank and how it helps get the current treasures.)

Magic x ?. Ben and I played a few games of this. I usually forget to track them. We have some pretty competitive standard decks now. We are looking forward to the M14 prerelease (sealed deck) tournament in a couple of weeks.

Didn't play many games as I flew to the capital on Wednesday and only came back late last night. But I managed to create two stories with Vésteinn using Rory's Story Cubes and then we played a few games with my brother-in-law, his wife and our two younger daughters. The Resistance is fun and fixes the problem I see with Werewolf, ie. you don't have any information to deduce who's the bad guy. I see it getting played when the right crowd is in the house!

Another rather active gaming week:

20 x Love Letter
3 x Unpublished Prototype
3 x Omba
2 x Diamant
1 x Tix
1 x Key West
1 x New Amsterdam

Heimlich & Co. (played this with Ravensburger rules for the first time, which really changed the game; I hardly liked it)
1 x 7 Wonders

Key West and New Amsterdam were new to me, and I found both of them ok, but was impressed by neither.

In the last days of July, my family and I will be heading for a nine-day gaming vacation at WBC.

Between now and that time, we will lose one full week to a national basketball tournament in Indiana.

So there are really just three weeks left to prepare for the competition, something we have been looking forward to since the day we went home from it a year ago.

Last year, the kids competed only in the Juniors divisions. This year, Antony is too old, and Donte is way too advanced a gamer to spend too much time in the Juniors room. What's more, Holiday has asked to play in some adult events starting this year.

The expectation I have for my kids, regarding gaming at the adult tables, is the same expectation any of the gamers at the competition are going to have of them: they are welcome to play despite their age, provided that they know how to play the game well. So we practice. A number of the games from this past week reflect us getting ready for the Lancaster trip.

It was a great gaming week with the family.

San Juan
My rating: -7- but when played with four players I give San Juan an -8-
Plays: 3
Holly is getting really good at San Juan. I had two matches with her--both of which I won by the narrowest of margins--that were the two best, most exciting plays of this game I have ever had. In the second contest, I won on the last play, as I completed my 12th building. She had a Palace in her hand, and would have beaten me could she have played it, but was one single card short of being able to afford it. AWesome. At the end of the week, she challenged her oldest brother--they are two of a kind in personality--but unfortunately for her, he won by a ton. She has been asking to play this one daily; let's see if she still does, as losing to Antony so badly did frustrate her.

Race for the Galaxy
My rating: |9|
Plays: 3
Among this week's plays of this family favorite: Donte and I played at a Boston Market, while waiting for Antony's basketball practice to end.

En Garde
My rating: -7-
Plays: 1
Donte and I got this played at a city library in Baltimore, again waiting on an Antony basketball practice.

Carcassonne
My rating: -8-
Plays: 1
Teaching game with Holly.

Chicken Cha Cha Cha
My rating: -8-
Plays: 3
Only three games of Cha this week!

Augustus
My rating: -7-
Plays: 3
Augustus returns after a one-week break. This has been a hit at our bi-monthly gaming group, as well as with the kids.

Ivanhoe
My rating: -8-
Plays: 2
A favorite of the boys, I taught the girls this game this past week using no action cards, so they could get a firm grasp on the trick-taking mechanism. They got this really well, and liked it. Then we added the action cards, and that didn't go so well. This game rewards repeated plays.

Navegador
My rating: Too early to tell.
Plays: 2
I think this is a game that I will like, but I have to admit my first real play of it was pretty frustrating. Donte "got it" right away, and won by a ton with a great economic engine and clear plan. I bumbled along, and Holly and I tied for last. Was it fun? Not sure yet. I for sure liked it enough to give it a bunch more tries.

Goa
My rating: -7-
Plays: 1
Our second play of this, and Antony's first. We let Antony control the start player pretty much the whole game, and he killed us. A lesson learned.

Love Letter
My rating: -8-
Plays: 1
Linsey is always after me to play this one, so we got four of us to the table for it.

Montgolfiere
My rating: -7-
Plays: 1
We play a blind-draw of this game with the babies (Preston is 4, Pria is 3). So that isn't really a "game" by my snobby definition, since there are no decisions. But for this game, and with this company, I love it none the less. We have a great time with Montgolfiere, and the babies love it.

Ingenious
My rating: -7-
Plays: 1
We had a very frustrating session of this game. Linsey (age 8) had a lot of trouble understanding how to score.

Coup
My rating: Too early to tell.
Plays: 4
I have owned this for a while, but finally got it out at game group. So I haven't tried this with the kids yet. I will! This was fun. Certainly similar to Love Letter, in that it is a very small deck, an extremely quick-playing game, featuring deduction and bluffing. But where bluffing is a very minor element in Love Letter, in this game it is the primary mechanism (if you are going to do well). I'll let you all know next week how this went with the family.

Spot it!
My rating: -5-
Plays: 2
Not a favorite game mechanic of mine. Too much chaos. I get enough chaos as a parent; I don't need it in my games. But I must say, I did enjoy a play of this with just me and Preston. He is competitive with me if, when I turn over the next card, I pause just an extra beat with it facing toward him before I place it face-up on the table.

6 nimmt!
My rating: Too early to tell.
Plays: 1
I played this once with the kids a good while ago, and it didn't go over well. Too much numbers and not enough Fun perhaps. But I like this game, and when it got brought out at game night, I was happy. Maybe I'll give it another go with the kids.

Cheeky Monkey
My rating: Too early to tell.
Plays: 1
This came out at game night. My kids weren't at the table. A shame. This was great. I'm going to have to buy this one for the family. How had I not already discovered this family-friendly game from my favorite designer?

Coloretto
My rating: -7-
Plays: 1
It has been great re-discovering Coloretto, something all my kids ages 8+ can enjoy.

Ticket to Ride
My rating: -8-
Plays: 1
Perhaps the best game of Ticket to Ride I have been in to date. The four oldest kids and I, and we sped through it, despite it being a five-player, in one hour. Everyone had high scores, with Antony coming out on top.

Other plays for me and/or the kids:
1 X -8- Saint Petersburg
1 X -8- Settlers of Catan
1 X -7- Small World
1 X -7- Village
1 X -7- Roll Through the Ages

Games, games and more games!

Lots of gaming with my preschooler this week but less adult gaming than usual. My friend brought her 12 year daughter along to our Monday afternoon gaming session as she was off school, so we went for slightly more family fare than usual. Then my daughter had a music concert on Friday evening, so I missed half the gaming session then! And I'd normally get at least some gaming in at the weekend with my husband or older children, but on Saturday we had tickets to Wimbledon, and on Sunday the whole family except for my pre-schooler and I were ill with a vomiting bug, so that didn't happen either!

Gaming with adults:
3 x Race for the Galaxy
1 x Agricola, Contraband, Escalation, Factory Fun, Flash Point Fire Rescue (with Urban Structures), Innovation, London, Montego Bay, Phoenicia, Robo Rally (trying out my new Radioactive board that I picked up in the latest UK MathTrade)

Gaming with my children
4 x Kleine Fische
3 x Motorway
1 x Cranium Hullabaloo, Crazy Chefs, Hungry Homer, Railroader, Wordquest

Over the last week I think the biggest deal with my daughter was getting to play Niagara, which we played with just the two of us, but having two colours each and combining gems for victory. This went very well, so we're looking forward to playing this again, hopefully with another player or two some time.

The other family games we played were Castle Keep, Family Fluxx, Nature Fluxx (yup, a bit of a Fluxx week!), and Goblins Drool, Fairies Rule!.

I got a bit of grown-up gaming in as well, with a game of Android: Netrunner with my wife, plus Kill the Overlord (a very silly but fun game) and The Resistance: Avalon at work during lunch breaks. Plus I'm racking up plays in various games on Yukata.de.
