This year I will be at Essen again. Last year I took quite a lot with me and have not regretted much. Nevertheless, this year for logistical reasons I decided to get only 13 games. But can "games" really include expansions? Certainly not

Also, this year I will go by car so transport should not be an issue. Btw: Does anybody know if it is allowed to leave the halls (to bring the treasures to the car) and re-enter the halls afterwards?

So this is my almost final list with some thoughts on the individual games.

I am lacking a real city-building game in the vain of Sim-City. This might just be it. From my impression of the rules it seems more complex than Suburbia, which I sadly have not tried yet. I also like the art style quite much.

When I first read about the game I was not aware of the comic novels on Corto Maltese. Now I have already half the books available in German and I am seriously hooked to this compelling piece of literature. So I am also eager to have this beautiful game that mechanics-wise sound also intriguing. Overall my interest in it seems to be the result of a classical example of a feedback-loop ).
My only fear for the game is that it might not be that iteresting for people not yet knowing the world created by Hugo Pratt. One more reason to read the books!

This game was published by Argentum last year and as so often I completely missed it. A few days ago I read a review of it. The concept of a backwards Scotland Yard with a Wild West theme and lots of communication seems right up my alley. So I will visit the booth of the Argentum Verlag and see if they brought some copies along.

I admit: I am a complete sucker for Friedemann's games. A visit to Essen without bringing at least one game of him home is against my nature. This game is what I will pick this year (I am not so interested in Futterneid). Since I am currently searching for a new flat I might even learn something!

Last year I bought the main game with a friend of mine. It took us the better part of an afternoon to understand how it works. Now that we do that, we can take the next step and make it even more complex Seriously though: While the rulebook is intimidating, the overall game is not that hard to learn (maybe hard to master?). And what is more important: It is as hard as hard science-fiction in a board game can get. So bring it on!

The moment I saw the cover of the game I was hooked: Beautiful science-fiction game on a Mars colony combined with crime. Gotta love it! It seems to be a rather pure Eurogame with an auction mechanism at its heart. Also it should work well with 3 players. Did I mention that its artstyle is great? I am very glad that it will be available at Essen even though the Kickstarter/Preorder-Campaign did not succeed.

And here we go again: The art style brought me to preorder it. I am still looking for a further nice asymmetric two-player game. I tried Revolver but that was not what I was searching for. Maybe this is it?

I do like historical games a lot. This has an interesting and not much used theme. Also it is a worker-placement race game. Well that is something new! One of my best friends will probably love the fact that it is a game without victory points.

I am on the constant search for nice filler games. Somewhere I read that this game replaced Lost Cities for the author, one of my wife's and mine alltime favorite two-player games. But it can also be played with more than two. So let's have a look.

For quite some time this game went under my radar. Recently, while researching my Essen-interests I stumbled upon it. It has a railroad theme (which is so far missing in my collection) is a heavy but innovative worker placement game with an attached engine mechanism, has Rupples (= Russian Meeples) and a reasonable price tag attched to it (I am looking at you, Caverna!). Also there were raving previews from some people whose opions on games I respect a lot after the Gathering of Friends. So this is definetly one game I will check out and maybe buy.

Sentinels is one of the most played games of the last year in my collection. Even though it quite often gets a bit fiddly I love the theme and the work building, also its variability while being nevertheless mechanically rock solid. Naturally I joined the Kickstarter campaign and am very happy to collect now. Sadly, Vengeance will not be released before next year cry

I have already some Artipa games, which I like but not overly love. Shadows over the Empire seems to be a rather agressive but also fast game of conspiracy. The variability due to the many cards as well as the very reasonable price made me join the Kickstarter campaign. I am very interested how the real game works.

Another game of last year's Spiel that was played a lot by me and my game group was Escape. I still love the hectic gameplay that nevertheless does not completely overwhelms like for example Space Alert (at least in my book). So here we have another simultaneous dice-game, but this time it is a competitive team-game. And it is also in space! Definetly this game is quite high on my Want-to-have-list.

Usually I do not like games that want to be humorous and use art to bring this point home. But recently my game group and I played Descent 2nd Edition. From this experience I learned two things:

a) I do not like Descent 2nd Ed at all. It is too slow, too fiddly and complex and frankly simply not interesting enough for me.
b) I like dungeon-romp board games a lot (must have been all those Heroquest and Spacequest sessions i was socialzed with as a kid)

So here we have a game that calls itself a "hack-and-slash game". I think that this should work for me. The mechanics themselves look deep enough but it does not seem too fiddly. Another plus in my book for this kind of game.

The game has been compared to King of Tokyo which is a game my group and I play quite often as finishing game of the evening. The dice look very nice, the theme I like and the Dice-Tower review was also very positive. Nervtheless I am not sure if I really should get it: For what it is it seems rather pricey, the board seems to be microscopic and even for a dice game it might be a little too light for my taste. There is only one solution: I have to try it.
