Below is my Top 10 list of games covering the English Civil War(s). These are games that meet substantially all of the following criteria: (1) focuses on the English Civil War(s); (2) can be strategic in scale or covering individual battles of the English Civil War(s); (3) primarily a wargame, but can address elements of the political, diplomatic and economic pressures associated with the English Civil War(s); (4) addresses the "theme" in an interesting or compelling manner that leaves the player with a better understanding of the English Civil War(s) (and their various aspects); and (5) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

Not to be confused with the War of the Rose, which is covered on Top 10 War of the Roses Games.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

For a complete listing of my Top 10 lists, see--MetaList: Nap's Top 10 Lists.

As always, thanks for reading and participating!

NOTE: Where I have included quotes from BGG users, I have included the BGG user name in parentheses.

The game is not just a military simulation but blends in the social and political influences of the period. A great example of how good the card driven system is when used by a game designer who truly knows the history.

This is an excellent game system which I have had a lot of fun playing. The activation/orders method works very well in conjunction with the system's triplet of morale, formation and casualty. The system nice captures a lot of the unique flavor of the period.

The King's War is an excellent game, and it stands equal to Unhappy King Charles as a take on the English Civil War. The rulebook contains some of the usual quirks, but it is far from "incoherent."

Are the Regions listed in the rulebook, or did Ijust miss this part? Actually, I found them on the back of one of the two essential play-aids; it helps to look at both sides.

Just as in UKC, the city/town names are covered up by units and markers, but I don't see a practical way of avoiding this. The desertion & recruitment rules seemed more streamlined, or is that just my imagination after the headache they gave me in UKC? This is a game well worth having and playing.

Excellent game thanks to a system which doesn't interfere too much with the dynamics of the period - namely the clunky interrelationships between tactical/weapons systems in a time of transition. Played this just the other day - scenario could have gone any of three ways coming in to the last turn & ended in a tense draw - lovely stuff.

Highly playable, but difficult for the Royalists to win due to sea movement by Protestant armies almost at will and areas are difficult to control.

A wonderful light tactical system but I doubt Parliament will win many sessions.

Great system....and the counters have 2 sides instead of the one in original 30 yrs quad.....great game but who wants to attack ..both sides sit on brilliant defensive ground and stare across at each other

A decent treatment of warfare in the early 1600s, now eclipse by the better Musket and Pike System from GMT such as This Accursed Civil War. It is still worth a look however because it is a faster playing system and has some good historical flavor -- better overall than the SPI Thirty Years War Quad.

My most-played title from the SDC line. This was an elegant little game that appeared, from my limited knowledge of the subject, to capture nicely the ebb and flow of the ECW. I haven't played it for decades, but I remember it fondly.
