GCL 4: For board games, I gave up...
Eating! No, not really, but sometimes I wish I didn't like food so much so I could cut down on what I spend so I had more money for board games!

This week's discussion is about what you gave up to get into board games and/or expand your collection. This could be other hobbies, cuts to the budget, etc. Also, if you ended up doing something differently to get board games, like going to thrift stores when you never did before, or maybe found a way to make more money to support your board game hobby. This is the time to discuss how board gaming changed your life, habits and budget!

I've always enjoyed creative writing, but a few years before I got into board games, I was really active and pursuing creative writing. I had dreams and aspirations to get published. While I thoroughly enjoyed this, it got very frustrating as I was always told I was good, but not great. So wrote less and less and then board games came along. Board games allowed me to still be creative, but also to interact with others while doing it. So I gave up pursuing creative writing to get more into board games.

While I still consider myself a gamer, I haven't played video games as much as I did before board games. Before board games, my husband and I collected video games. I say collected because we often bought more than we could play and our collection includes PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, GameCube, Xbox and Xbox 360. I also have a DS, which I often played on my own.

I still like video games, but when we got into board games, there just wasn't enough time to do both, so we gradually left video games alone. I think in the past two years we've only bought a few disc-based games, but several downloadable games on the Xbox 360 Marketplace. I really enjoy the arcade and some indy games because they're light and short. I really hope they keep supporting the Xbox 360 for a long long time.

I used to read a lot! But the last few years, I haven't been as much. It's because most of my spare time is spent on our board game designs. I still read a little, like when I need breaks from game design.

So I actually got rid of a lot of books to make room for board games on the shelves. And now I'm considering getting rid of some books in boxes out in the garage that I've collected but don't read.

We've also gotten rid of a lot of knick-knacks and collectibles crowding the shelves. Mostly it was my stuff as my husband didn't collect much. But I had a glass collection, pewter collection, comic book collectibles... and the shelves now house board games.

Before we really got into boardgaming we watched a lot of television. Both series and movies. I think our tv was on almost every night from 19.00 till 22.00.

Nowadays we play more games then we watch television, which is a good development (we think).

Budget has been tight the last couple of years. And since boardgaming is considered a luxary instead of a necessity in our house I had to resort to other means of acquiring games.

So about a year ago I started translating the rules for White Goblin Games, a publisher in the Netherlands. So every now and then I get to choose some games from their catalog as a compensation for the translation.

Perfect for me as I like to read rules and like working with languages and I like boardgames :-)
