I'm not there yet. Was watching a review by Enrico of Tannenberg. He indicated he started wargaming in 1979, which led me to put a date on when I started: 1975. Which, started me thinking on whether I'll make my 50th anniversary. 2025. 12 years to go. An idea for a list....

Let's hear it from those of our tribe that have achieved entry into the Legion of Gold (and, we're going to need someone to design a BGG badge - and we need some celebration - probably at WBC - and maybe also at CSW Monstercon). Sound out, golden gronards (Legion GG).

Or, if you are like me, what year will you achieve it?

Three other items: what game started you on the path, who started you off on the path and how are you going to celebrate it?

I'll kick it off.

2025 is my date.

Game that started it off? PanzerBlitz.

Who? My parents; pop loves history and mom would drop me off in the game section of Sears stores when shopping.

How will I celebrate? I'm going to try to generate some serious cash between now and then. When I have a pile of gold, I'll fly a gang somewhere and we'll play a monster for a month. Needs to be by a beach. Someplace with good shrimp, umbrellas in drinks, people to serve us our drinks (and fan us with those big fans) and some people to suitably entertain us after a full day of gaming. If I make a HUGE pile of gold, we'll rent an army to re-enact the days battle, with a full orchestra playing in the background.

2032 for me.

The first four games I got (all on the same day) & played were Squad Leader, Starship Troopers, Luftwaffe, & Panzer Blitz! I'm just glad I played Squad Leader before I tried to play Luftwaffe, or else I might decided there were better uses for my time.

I started in December of 1965, or perhaps the following month, with this game. So, I only have a year and a half to go.

If chess counted, I'd be over fifty years, already.

Aegean Strike from Victory Games started my "real wargame" career. Bought it from my friend Akke. Since that time hundreds of games have been added.

2034 is my entry in the Legion of Gold And if Stratego and Risk are classified as wargames, my entry year will be 2028.

I am going to celebrate this by buying my umpteenth wargame.

I can actually pinpoint the DAY I played my first (non-Risk) wargame: Tuesday, November 2, 1976. It's easy to remember (and look up the date) because it was election day in the US.

The game was Panzer Leader. I didn't like it! But my friend kept introducing me to other wargames that I did like (Blitzkrieg for one, and Kingmaker as a MAJOR hit) and I went from there.

2018...started with the Square Version of Gettysburg in 1968. Saw that game and Tactics II in the 'Notions' department of Gertz Department Store (Jamaica Queens) I guess they did not know what to do with a Grown up game like wargames, so instead of the Toy department, they put it with all the other odds and ends.

(November 5, 1968 by the way)

"Remember remember the 5th of November...."

It's a close tie between this game and Melee/Wizard around 1978. I wasn't into history or historical games at that time. I remember that War of the Ring and Sorcerer were both advertised in the Sears (Christmas?) catalog at the time. So, 2028 for me.

Answered an ad in Boy's Life magazine (the official magazine for Boy Scouts of America) that promised a history magazine- with a game in each issue! I was sold- scraped together my paper route money and sent it in. This was the first issue. surprise My two neighborhood friends and I were quite disappointed- we were expecting a war game. Played it anyway- was fun, but dreadfully slow and fussy- even for the era. Luckily, the free introductory game- Napoleon at Waterloo- arrived a couple of weeks after (yes, it was supposed to arrive before the first issue). That one, we played to death. Panzer Army Africa also came with that subscription; wow, was I hooked!

Since that all happened in 1973, that makes 2023 my golden year. Looks like I can now pick up one of those 40 year badges...

My golden year will be 2031.

A group of high school friends asked me to join their wargaming club and this is the game I cut my tooth on. It has remained one of my favorites since. I remember my friend also had Starship Troopers and Squad Leader. Another friend got Magic Realm, which I don't believe we ever ended up playing as I soon got the basic set of Dungeons and Dragons, which we then spent most of our time playing. Too bad as we then got away from the wargames....

2025 or thereabouts. I started playing this with my Dad around the time I was 8. War at Sea was an X-mas present not too long after.
