One thing I noticed right away with the membership for GCL Beehive – everyone has an avatar – except me! (Late, lazy and indecisive, what a combination.) I find many avatars interesting, some are recognizable, but many are mysterious. I’m looking for inspiration. How did you decide on, and create the graphics for, your avatar? How does it connect to your life? Do you change it on a regular or irregular basis?

One great reason to be interested in the topics of GCL Beehive is to find out from others about new games that might work well with the family and kids. How else do you find out about family games of interest? Do you get input from your other family members on such games?

Leading of of the last question, what new-to-you (not necessarily new-within-the-last-year-or-so) game from the last year or so would you recommend for a family that plays games? I realize this is somewhat similar to the ‘5 Games Everyone Should Own' that Christian posted a couple of weeks ago, but, here, feel free to suggest a game that has gone over well recently, but, maybe it was a surprise or it isn't one you'd recommend for every household.

Ok, this is my play list from the week (plus) of June 29-July 7, my family's vacation. We got together with my brother's family at the beach, and there was some excellent gaming as well, particularly with my brother and my son (12 years old). The three of us are the 'gamers' in the family, and we really enjoy a chance to try a few new games and revisit some favorites.

Plays
Conquest of Paradise x1
Telestrations x1

Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer x2
Battle Line x1
Forbidden Island x1
Harry Potter Trading Card Game x1
Lunch Money x1
Mastermind x1
Mission: Red Planet x1
Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game x2
Rummikub x2
Small World x1
The Resistance x1
Thunderstone x1
Wits & Wagers Family x1

For the three gamers, the consensus was that Conquest of Paradise was the most enjoyable. It's a really nice Civ-lite/exploration game, interesting resource management, a bit of battle (simple) and a nice theme. 90-minute play time for the three of us, new players. Recommended for older kids, interested in something a bit more strategic, with a map! Currently out of print, but GMT has it on their pre-order system now for a 2nd printing.

Telestrations was the one that was a hit with the non-gamers - we played with a full set of 8 people, and had good fun for an evening. Wits & Wagers Family was also fun for the broader group, and we even gave a try to The Resistance with seven, including the younger cousins (7 & 8 yo). It turns out that some of the acting & bluffing & strategy is a bit complex for that age, so it wasn't a complete success, but folks could see the potential and interest in it - even my 70+ year old mother. So, maybe we'll try it again sometime, when the girls are a bit older.

Other comments: my son really liked Ascension: Deckbuilding Game on the iPad (new to us); I was happy to get a chance with Mission: Red Planet (which I really like, but it's not a favorite in my immediate family); and I found out that Lunch Money, which I got in a math trade here on BGG, is pretty awful. Anyone interested to trade for it?

Very quiet week of gaming - it was the first week of school holidays for my kids, so we were out and about doing all the theme parks that will be busy from this week, or were outside enjoying the sunshine - we spent two afternoons at the local outdoor pool. The only gaming with my kids at all was Sunday morning, before I had to play the organ in church. I gamed with my husband both evenings at the weekend, and we had our usual Friday evening session, but that was it for games last week! I'm hoping this week to get more gaming with the kids, as we have a quieter week planned, and then this weekend is our annual summer BBQ, which always involves quite a bit of gaming - late in the evening after the BBQ, and the next day with friends who stay over.

Gaming with adults:
3 x The City
2 x Suburbia
1 x Australian Rails, Fauna, Gnadenlos, Igel Argern, Innovation, Lost Cities, Puerto Rico, Spooks, Turfmaster, Urban Sprawl

Gaming with my kids:
1 x Sorry! Sliders, UNO

You can view more details of my last week here: Item for Geeklist "What Did You Play This Weekend? 7/22/2013"

I traveled most of last week, but still managed to get a few games in.

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small x 2 = this was last week's highlight for me, as my wife accompanied me during my trip up North, and I ended up teaching this to her during our wedding anniversary!

Mage Knight Board Game x 2 (NEW) = my first plays of this ever, during my business trip to Thailand early last week!

Man that was a lot easier than typing them all out.

I also had the opportunity to play Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beginner Game which I really enjoyed.

The big thing this week was the Unpublished prototype plays. Early this week I was thinking about games with few components and thought I would try my hand at designing one. I prototyped it Monday and played it w/ kids, wife, and friends. It's encouraging.

Also, Michael w/ Tasty Minstrel Games showed up at our game night on Friday (He recently moved close by and does stop in from time to time.) I had the opportunity to play a prototype of his a few times as well.cool

I also tried Dice's Zoo, which was a "meh" game. Kids kind of liked it, but it was lack luster with them as well.

The big event of the week was my Cousin and his wife coming over, we all played a big game of Dixit, followed by cobbler, yum.

And just to make John less uncomfortable, I'll add the games I played during my family gathering in January. My mother and her siblings own the old house where they were born and raised. This house (Kollsá - The River of Kollur) is a huge house with groundfloor, second floor - or do you call that first floor? - and a cellar/basement (I must admit that I do get confused with UK/US words...) with 9 bedrooms, kitchen, larder, living room, furnance, carpentry room, cognac room (ok, ok, it's not as big as this sounds, or fancy, but it's nice!). Me, my parents and my brothers and their families have met one weekend in January for the last three years, just to play games, chat and enjoy ourselves!

The house, with the family (sometime in the late 70's I guess. That's me in the green sweater / red trousers far on the left):

The playlist:
4 x Carcassonne (w/Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders)
3 x Liar's Dice / Perudo
3 x Time's Up!
2 x Puerto Rico (the game me and my brothers usually play when we meet for gaming)
2 x Spot It!
1 x Catan (w/Seafarers)
1 x Cuckoo Zoo
1 x The Downfall of Pompeii
1 x Incan Gold
1 x Skrípó (Icelandic party game where you make up captions to comics. Ok, but nothing great).

Le Havre is a game Helena and I enjoy, but it's quite long and consequently doesn't get onto the table very often... we are therefore, I suspect, not very good at it! Although it has similarities to Agricola, it never feels quite as tight as there are always good things to do.

Also on the table this week were Cartagena, Two by Two and Race for the Galaxy.

With the children the usual assortment of things: several games of Hordes of the Things and Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation, with Pick Picknic, Tal der Abenteuer: Die Schatzsuche im Himalaja and Monopoly: Manchester Edition also featuring. Not to mention a game Rebecca had invented, in which you had to guess whether different foods were savoury, sweet or a mixture, plus a snakes and ladders-esque thing she'd found in a Scooby Doo annual and insisted on playing.

All told, quite a light week, the weather has been so great here we've generally been out all day, and with the summer holidays meaning relaxed bed-times, less time to themselves available for adults in the evenings!

A normal gaming week with the family, concluding with an annual GCOM gaming picnic (Games Club of Maryland) on Sunday. Smoking hot outside, not my idea of a good time...except for all the great company and fun games which balanced out the sweat and bugs.

I'll make Targi my Game of the Week, despite only starting it with a -6- rating. It fills a niche in my house. Most of our made-for-just-two player games are short fillers, or else there is Twilight Struggle...

I have played Targi twice now, once with each of my two oldest boys, and have enjoyed it. If it holds up over time, I'll boost the rating.

5x -7- Chicken Cha Cha Cha
4x -8- Lost Cities
2x -7- Augustus
2x -7- Bora Bora
2x -5- Elk Fest
2x |9| Race for the Galaxy

Wow. I didn't get much gaming done this week. I have spent most of my time this week finishing up the new gaming table I am building. Guess that took away from play time. Of course, I don't log anything I don't play, so any games my wife and son play without me aren't included.

1 x 7 Wonders with our newest acquisition: leaders

1 x Flash Point: Fire Rescue. Been wanting to try this for AGES.

1 x Glory to Rome. Another game I had been dying to try.

1 x Guess Who?, a regular for my son.

1 x LEGO Creator

1 x Pictionary Junior

Last week, we added Heroica: Ilrion to our LEGO gaming set, which now includes all of the Heroica boxes except Heroica: Ganrash (which I have never found in Canada).

Heroica is not much more than a roll-and-move game with a theme, but the LEGO construction portion makes it a kid favourite.

With soccer season in full swing, we are not really playing very much these days.

2 x Q bitz Extreme
1 x Blokus

Just finished making this, for Matthew's birthday in a couple of week's time. He plays lots of games with dice, but occasionally there ar small disagreements about whether they've been rolled properly or not (even when using dice cups!). What do you reckon? I'm quite pleased with it - there are a couple of horizontal rods inside for the dice to bounce off to increase randomness.

Since I can't post next week, I wanted to slip in what would have been my Game of the Week for that list:

Via Appia is the new hotness in the Saccenti home, and now joins Augustus in the running of the "best 2013 family games" for our family.

Many will say that the stone pusher is a gimmick. Sure, but it is a great gimmick and the result is that my kids are asking to play this one. That counts as a winner for me.

You can see the game being played on the most recent edition of BGG Game Night!
