LankyEngineer originally created these surveys to provide a fun diversion that would get the community talking about their hobby. Along the way, we've learned a lot about BGG and its users.

Please note: he has started a 10 Questions Series Subscription Thread.

Please answer all of the following questions in a single geeklist entry.

We have been playing Elfenland a lot with my in-laws since we first tried it a few weeks ago. My mother-in-law in particular is still working on figuring out the strategies. It doesn't help that I just discovered we had been playing a rule wrong from the beginning. This will change the game completely.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Since my favorite game of all time is based on a licensed property, this is kind of a no-brainer. Lord of the Rings for the win!

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
Depends on the competition. For instance, if it was a foot race, immovable object won't even finish. Now if it was a board game that could be interesting. The negotiations would be terrible between the 2, because one would always be getting its way, while the other would refuse to budge.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Probably Ticket to Ride. While there's no guarantee I'd win, I'm pretty comfortable with the common strategies, and could at least put up a good fight.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Las Vegas. I haven't played it yet, but it sounds like it is a game heavily influenced by luck. I think that pretty much sums up Vegas. Offer a way for all players to lose and the house to walk away with all the money, and then you'd really nail it right on the head.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
I'm pretty simple, don't really have refined tastes. I tend to be a people-pleaser, and avoid much confrontation. Sounds kind of like Bohnanza to me.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
Something that would bring out religious or political debate. The last thing I want is a moderator strolling in and locking a 10 questions geeklist. I imagine something like "How do you feel about Obamacare?" would do the trick.

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
An agreement that any night when I would normally get to play games, I will instead be given the opportunity to see a movie that I haven't seen but would like to see. I'm about equally obsessed with movies as I am with games. Oh, or maybe a child. If God decided to grant my wife and I a child, I could easily put off gaming to spend hours with him/her.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
Lord of the Rings has an awful rulebook for one. I'm not sure how the book in the new Silver Line edition is, but the original was very poorly constructed. Also it only contains as much theme as the players are willing to put in. If you just start talking trees and feet it can really start to become abstract.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Bats, because they devour mosquitos. I'd love to just send my pet bats out to clear out the bugs before having a picnic or something.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
I'm never sure what is in and what is out of print. Maybe Blue Moon City.

Just played 8 minute last night. I need to learn not to defend one territory so vehemently.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

Probably Age of Empires 3.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?

I would be rooting for the universe to collapse in on itself. That would be a mind bending experience.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

Umm, i'm not going to toot my own horn too much here (my eyesight is bad enough), but I've won a few tournaments in my day. I'm usually pretty confident enough in most games to be competitive.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

Chinatown. Very thematic negotiation game. Quite fun too.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?

Hawaii, because I imagine Tom Vassal would like to throw me in the trash.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?

Where did you hide the artifact!?!?! Tell me now!!!!!!

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

I am guaranteed to live to be at least 1,000 years old and wont age. I also get to pick another person to live this long without aging.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

I play formula de a lot, so I will use that game here. I use house rules to make the game more playable. I hate that I have to use house rules. Why couldn't they get it right without me?

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?

6 inch tall sheep. I could keep them in an aquarium.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

Star wars queens gambit. I could have bought 30 copies of the game for 5 bucks each at one point. Doh!

I did a 5-player solo game last night. If I had gone with the "most like to play" option this would still be the pick.

Quote:
1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game

Quote:
2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
The depends on how you define "winning". Resisting the irresistible force or moving the immovable object is implied, but there's a simpler solution where both retain their properties: the force punches a hole through the object (which doesn't move) and keeps on going.

Quote:
3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
There are several I could play in a tournament, but being qualified doesn't automatically mean I'd be willing. Unless it was just a fun tournament with a group of friends I'd most likely avoid it, because tournaments where there's some sort of reward for winning often seems to brings out the worst in certain players and makes it un-fun for everyone else.

Quote:
4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

Fireball Island - It didn't earn the name because it was a tropical paradise vacation spot.

Quote:
5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
I never know how to answer these.

Quote:
6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
Anything political; there are better places at BGG for that.

Quote:
7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
Being placed in cryogenic storage for 1 year.

Quote:
8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
(Merchants & Marauders) There can be significant downtime between turns if other players are dinking around too much and can't make up their minds what to do, or if they're not paying attention to what's happening between turns and have to get caught back up every time. Unfortunately for some players this is a self-reinforcing cycle, and the longer it takes them to do what they need to do the less they pay attention to everything else, and then the downtime really does become a serious problem. As soon as phones/iPads/etc. start coming out or the TV gets turned on, it's pretty much over.

With players that are paying attention and know what they're doing this is almost a total non-issue.

Quote:
9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Sasquatch

Quote:
10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
I'd love to get my hands on a couple of the old Formula De tracks. Most can still be found here and there, but only at insane prices which aren't worth it.

Rialto. Won it in a contest here on BGG. I'm not crazy for Feld's heavier games, but I'm liking this lighter one so far.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Lord of the Rings Have to agree with Lott there. Love that game.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
I just cannot imagine an object that won't move. Won't move?! In relation to what? Doesn't really make sense to me, so I think it would lose.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Titan. Solid on the rules. Played it in a tournament once, and won.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Himalaya seems to give that feeling of isolated, roundabout trails leading through snow, rock, & ice.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
Settlers. Light-hearted, straight-forward, non-confrontational.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
What game would you like to take a dump on? This would provoke a heated discussion, followed by a locked thread.

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
Enough money for me and my family to not have to work again, and good waves during that year for my other hobby.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
In Titan, I think when someone's first two movement rolls are sixes, and they muster two warlocks, it can lead to a lucky win. Some groups have various house rules to prevent that. My friends have a house rule that attacker cannot put two warlocks on the battleboard until they have 200+ points.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Well, my wife would love a pet falcon, so that would be it.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
Goa, which reminds me, I should ask David to bring his copy tomorrow.

Well, I'm on vacation in Germany right now, and happened to find this a few days ago, and last night we decided to try it. First and last play I suspect, it's hard as hell to see if two boobies belong together or not without putting the tiles next to each other.
1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Lord of the Rings with an expansion or two.
2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
Yes. Because.
3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Catan or Ticket to Ride
4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
This is a tricky one, because I've not been to most of those places, but I've played the games. I'd say Carcassonne and Le Havre seems to be the best choices here.
5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
1830: Railways & Robber Barons. Big, slow, heavy on mathemathics.
6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
What is your real name and location?
7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
A lot.
8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
That it is so much better with 4 than any other number of players, especially 2. (Catan)
9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
A Seal!
10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
Civilization & Advanced Civilization. Someone needs to sort out the rights to this and publish a new edition.

I have been teaching 63 people how to play this. I have also been updating the Vassal module. So this game has been something of an obsession for the last month.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
War of the Ring: Greatest Ameri-trash game e-vuh!!!

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
If K-State is on offense, irresistible force wins. If K-State is on defense, immovable object wins. Football: 5 weeks away!!! EMAW!

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Washington's War. Give me the Americans and I'll play anybody/any time. Give me British and I'll do the same, but I won't do as well.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Anzio. Darned hard to get those forces from the beach into Rome.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
Birth of a Legend. That was bestowed on me on the day of my birth.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
What do you want? If that makes no sense, see Babylon 5. Never ask that question.

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
Something bad.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
Mark Herman took the greatest game (We the People) and made it better. The only flaw is that I can't get in enough games.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Sea otters. Watch them. They're fun.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
Either Monty's Gamble: Market Garden or Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit.

11) What question should I ask in my next geeklist?
If a train was leaving Cleveland, heading east at 35 mph and another train was leaving from New York, heading west at 40 mph ...

I would have said El Grande, but now I'm getting spanked on Yucata

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

Don't really know.

The last two games I played (gulp...9 days ago) were poles apart: a dice-rolling filler (Las Vegas), and an 18xx series train game (1865: Sardinia).

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

I'm struggling here. I had to search through my ratings. I seem to have 4 rated 8: Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game, Discworld: Ankh-Morpork, and The Swarm, Lord of the Rings. I'd probably choose The Swarm

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?

I don't think there can be an irresistible force if there is an immovable object.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

I'm fairly decent at Macao or Glen More, although I'm getting a bit rusty. I'm not one for tournaments, though.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

Augsburg 1520. There's something about all players trying to be the best Jacob Fugger that I find enchanting. I'm a eurogamer. My standards for theme/flavour etc are shockingly low.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?

Antiquity. I'd need a big box. Highly desirable. Rather expensive, but worth every penny.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?

Never say never. Only by stepping over the line do you discover where the line actually is.

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

Well, I don't think I played anything between the ages of 19 and 49, so I don't think a teeny 1-year sabbatical would be a problem.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

I'm not going to pick holes in the things I love.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?

Capybara. The world would look a much better place if everyone had a pet capybara.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

Kunst & Kennis Spel: The Art & Expertise Game of the Rijksmuseum. I saw it in Holland a few years ago. I fancied it, but didn't buy it. It's been on my wishlist ever since. The game is probably rubbish, but even so ...

0) As your geeklist entry, select the game you last played before posting in this geeklist.
I played Star Wars: Epic Duels on Sunday with my son, my wife, my brother-in-law, and my sister-in-law. This weekend was my 3-year-old son's first chance to play as his own character. Throw strategy out the window. This was purely for fun. I served as his "advisor" but he had final say on movement and actions. He chose to play as Darth Vader. We teamed up with my wife, who played as Darth Maul. Together, we defeated Yoda and Obi-Wan.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
For the time being, it's same as above. As I get to play Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game more, that may change. Are you sensing a theme here? Also, my son is hooked on Star Wars, which only adds to the level of enjoyment I get out of these games.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
Logically, this would be a tie. And since many games give the win to the defender in a tie, I'll choose the immovable object on the tiebreaker.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Catan because I've played hundreds of times, I know all the rules and all the general strategies, and I hold my own every time we play. I'd win more often if my family didn't penalize me for whining. I'd have a much more professional demeanor in a tournament setting, so that weakness would be a non-factor. Honorable mention: Memoir '44 if played on a standard size board.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
No geographically named game has better flavors than Candy Land. Gingerbread, lollipops, licorice, gumdrops, ice cream... No competition!

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
Anything that requires someone to be a banker. Except Monopoly.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
"What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?"

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
Some other enjoyable activity that my whole family could participate in. I can't think of any that are suitable year-round. Either that or a very large bribe.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
Memoir '44 - I don't see any one big flaw, but maybe a few very minor ones - setup time, doesn't work well with more than 2 players unless you play Overlord, expansions that require other expansions to play all of the included scenarios.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Tiger. People LOVE cats. This is just a really big one, except with cool stripes.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit - I think I've made it abundantly clear that I really like the theme. This is one of the rare instances where a licensed game is actually a good game to boot.

My wife and I played this for the first time last night, and she won. The game was sound, but not very exciting.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Hands down, Federation Commander

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
When I learn how to divide by zero, I will do the calculations and tell you.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Warhammer: Invasion. I am getting geared up for the North American Championship at Gen Con right now.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Lords of Vegas. The game has a lot of glitz and a lot of blessing by lady luck. However, at it's dark core it is ruthless and unforgiving.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
The Journeys of Paul. Because I am an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church, and the deacon is the most powerful piece in that game.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
What body part should be the new area of focus in an updated Busen Memo

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
Anything in life that was actually important and required that much of my attention.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
My favorite game is Memoir '44, and the biggest flaw is that sometimes it is impossible to get a card to move the side that need needs to be moved.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Giraffes, because my son would love to have a pet giraffe.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
As a fan of Star Wars and Memoir '44, I would love to have not missed out on Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit

We played LoW on Sunday night. I believe its my wifes new favorite game.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

Monopoly: Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl XLIII Champions Collector's Edition because it honors the sixth Super Bowl Championship of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?

The irresistible force, because no object is immovable.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

Boggle. I haven't even come close to losing a game of this in 30 years.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

Daytona 500, because if you are at that track you are there for the race.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?

Don't Give Up Your Day Job!. The warehouse that I work at has announced they will close by the end of the year.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?

In my (Blott) lifetime how many more times will the Detroit Lions go 0-16?devil

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

$10,000,000 after taxes.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

My favorite game is Scotland Yard and the biggest flaw shows up when one detective tells everyone else what to do.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?

Zebras because they are pretty.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

Metropolys

Or was it Love Letter?
(1)What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Does Lords of Waterdeep count?
(2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
The latter, because offense sells tickets; defense wins games.
(3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Ra
(4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Thebes simulates well the flavor of a dig.
(5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
Peaceful Resistance - the acme of passive-aggressive board games.
(6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
If you were a board game, which board game would you be?
(7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
The disappearance of all the members of my gaming group.
(8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
In Ra, the luck of the draw can be too predominant, although only rarely.
(9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Polar bear. The bigger the pet, the better.
(10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
Big City I've never played it, and I've heard good things about it.

Last game I played last night. Been wanting to try this since I heard about it. Been waiting for ti to hit the states and then it had to go and win some award and now is hard to find again.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Going to go with Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
Yes. Because.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Probably Memoir '44 just because I have played this more than any other game (besides Dominion on my phone). But the realities of dice and card draws would show me I have little business in a tourney.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
I always find myself impressed with Asara:

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
Probably the previous question!

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
A coma, medically induced or not.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
Sticking with M'44 I would say the setup and too many pieces. Makes it hard to have a "quick" game that is appropriate for how fast it can play. At least Overlord's play matches the set-up time, which is one of the reasons I prefer OL as the way to play this game.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Elephants.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
Keywood, Keydom, and Keytown. Love this series but only went back as far as Keythedral.

0) Played Urbanization last night with my son. Rating sinking.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
A Game of Thrones is about all I can think of that actually appeals to me. A World Without End would be #2. I can't think of #3.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
The immovable object. Immovable objects can't move. Objects that can move do so when a force is applied, unless they successfully resist the force.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Tichu

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Vanuatu. I haven't been there, but it seems like a crazy place. Turtle drawings on the beach? Seriously? Apparently so.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
A Brief History of the World. I tend to be brief. My sisters tease me that I live up to my name. Those who've seen some of my posts on BGG may have a hard time believing that.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
If you had to marry a game designer, who would it be?

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
My wife asking me to.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
Tichu's timing of bombs, and the attempt in the faq to codify it.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Skunk. I think a "Beware of skunk" sign would keep people away better than "Beware of dog"

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
I'm mostly over that now, with the realization that games are generally never-ending (like all creative works), so no need to dwell on the past. At least I looked through the top 300 and couldn't find anything.

I choose this one based on a solo play to see if it plays like I remembered and to see if I could come up with some variant rules.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

A Game of Thrones. I've only played it once, but I would love to play it again.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?

Irresistible force for the simple reason that I do not believe there are any objects in the universe that aren't moving.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

Dungeons and Dragons - You didn't specify board games.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

If only there was Acquire the New York Edition. I really can't think of a game I would say really gives me the feeling of a place. Caracsone the City comes to mind, but that feels like a stretch. Anything with Las Vegas comes to mind, but that just seems too easy.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?

I'll go with Pitch Car right now. I feel like I'm being banged around in circles.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?

Which busem memo (sp) card are you - Hey, that game has to appear on every geek list somewhere.

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

The birth of two kids. . .I haven't been able to game in ages. Either I'm busy with family stuff or my friends are. I even tried to join a local group-up but they folded. There is another meet up almost an hour away from me, but I just can't make that work right now with how busy my life is.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

I can't say that I have a favorite game right now, but, picking one I rate highly, Category 5 its humorous to see hurricane names that have been major hurricanes since the printing. Charlie comes to mind frequently while playing in central Florida.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?

Domesticate, and I mean truly domesticate a Zebra so it could be used like a horse. I just think they would look so neat, but, from what I understand, you really can't train them to be consistent mounts and they are always dangerous to ride.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

I have this love/hate relationship with Bloodbowl. I so would love to have a miniatures fantasy football game but the cost and painting the miniatures always just kills it for me. I keep telling myself I'm going to do some painting as a way to relax/de-stress but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Bonus Question:

11) What question should I ask in my next geeklist?

What was your most disappointing board game purchase in the last two years and why?

Ah...Sunday afternoon Dominion. A bit of a tradition in our house. I seem to remember my wife beating me by a single point on a Goons-based Base Game/Prosperity board, before we played a fascinating Seaside/Dark Ages layout where Native Village turned out to be the key card. I won after picking up my Native Village megaturn, where she erred by leaving a Spoils on the mat.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

Hmmm...my copy of Coda is loosely based on The Da Vinci Code. But I suspect it's not enough.

However, acquaintance of mine and designer of trainy-Euro games, Tony Boydell is contemplating a full release of Ivor The Engine - the Game. Watch this space...

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?

The irresistible force is an impossible concept by Newton's laws of motion. Therefore it doesn't exist. Walkover for the immovable object.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

Probably Agricola, I've played an awful lot of it. My Elo rating on boiteajeux isn't spectacular, but that's largely because I've done some experimental stuff and not really made an effort at times. Much to my acquaintances' annoyance, I seem to beat them on a pretty regular basis, and they are also very frequent players (last I looked, two of them were first and third on the most-played list). I would estimate I'm among the top 2% of players in the UK.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

Aha! I have ALWAYS said that Oregon is one of the best games at integrating theme, and I totally stand by that. Regardless of the cards you are dealt, there is always an incentive to make little pioneer towns thrive around gold mines, churches and railway stations, and it's all done with simple mechanics and an almost complete lack of rule-fiddling.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?

I'd be Scattergories. Loud, sociable, a bit rude and best with beer.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?

"What question should never be asked on this geeklist series"

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

1 year's worth of beer.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

To prevent this being another Agricola discussion, I shall claim my favourite game is Goa (which I also rank a ten). The main flaw is the auction 'fix' in the reprint, which completely negates a lot of the tension and valuation we had come to expect, especially from short-handed auctions. Luckily, we have an original printing and are happy to ignore the new rules.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?

I wouldn't. People are too stupid and neglectful in their ownership of pets as it is.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

Taktika. I believe this game only exists in a few people's imaginations. I am yet to be convinced that anyone actually OWNS a copy.

11) What question should I ask in my next geeklist?

Which character on a box cover does a member of your games group most resemble?

Okay, I'll play along, even though the "list the last game you played" things are often just "list some random game you may never play again". I may never play this again, but at least there's a story with it. Thanks, Ben, for giving us the option to be traditionalists, even though I didn't choose that option this time.

On Friday at CABS, it was getting late and my options were to join a game of Alien Frontiers or go home. I played it a couple of years ago and didn't like it, but I figured I could give it another chance. Ugh. If anything, it was worse the second time. It's attack-y and it has all sorts of potential for AP, which potential was realized in the game. I won and still had a bad time.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Battlestar Galactica. Which is strange, because I wasn't a fan of the show. I tried to get into it a few times and just couldn't. Maybe I'll try again some day, now that I have some familiarity with the characters. Who knows. It wouldn't be the first time I'd become a fan of a show after it went off the air.

Second choice is Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Game. It's harder to get to the table, but it's a good game. Better if you're a fan of the show.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
There are no winners in the game of paradox.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
I've played many of my favorite games in tournaments, including Dominion, Zendo, Euchre, Volcano, and others. Based on performance, I'd have to say Euchre. I once won a Duplicate Euchre tournament. My best Dominion performance was second place, although it was later determined that the winner cheated. I've had some good Dominion results, but mostly I'm just an also-ran in tournaments.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
A real location? I have no idea. I looked through my list of games played and I still have no idea. So I'll just say that TransAmerica is my most played location-based game.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
Zendo.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
This one. Never ask it again.

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
It would take a lack of playing games for a year. Oh, you mean why? I don't know. I've done it before, so I think I could do it again.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
Well, I have several favorite games, but I'll answer for Zendo. If the master comes up with a bad rule, it can get ugly.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Some animals are awesome because they're not domesticated, so that makes it harder to answer. And so many animals are too big or too small or too incompatible with human living spaces to be considered. Sorry, I got nothing.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
I don't necessarily miss out on a game just because it goes out of print. People own it, people bring it, we play it. Oh, it's out of print? Okay.

I noticed recently that I seem to have missed most of the Eminent Domain craze. It went from "nobody has it" to "all played out" with me only playing it a few times. I didn't totally miss out, and I don't particularly regret it, but that's as close as I can come at the moment.

This past weekend was pretty good for gaming. I even finally got to teach my wife to play Ghost Stories, one of my favorites and a game she's been curious about for a while but always too busy to actually sit down with. She seemed to enjoy it even though we lost horribly to the demon-hordes.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Right now it would be hard to beat Star Wars: X-Wing. It helps when a great property is serviced by an actually well-made and fun game.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
Paradox wins. The Universe collapses in upon itself at the inability of opposite absolutes to resolve themselves logically.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Probably the Star Wars CCG. I was actually in a local tournament years ago and took 2nd place, though I haven't played the game in about a decade, so who knows. Other than that, maybe King of Tokyo.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Does Lords of Vegas count? If so, it may be the only such game that I've played but I feel every bit the casino-tycoon when I play it. Wonderful Las Vegas fun!

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
Cosmic Encounter...wacky, sociable, unpredictable and just a ton of fun to be around. Never taking myself too seriously yet still prepared for some deep-thinking and asking the tough questions from time to time.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
What would you do for a Klondike bar? Yeah...let's not add fuel to the fire on that one.

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
Wow! I guess someone would have to offer me enough money to move my family back to Hawai'i and to be financially stable long enough for my wife and I to find quality employment. For that, I'd give up gaming for a year. Short of that, it would be a tough sell.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
Two flaws actually: 1) it leaves a bad first-impression with many people and 2) it doesn't scale well with less than 4 or with more than 6 players.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
Porcupines.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
It's only inbetween print runs but I do regret not pulling the trigger on Kickstarting the 4th printing of Alien Frontiers. Finally got to play it a couple weeks ago and it is a fantastic game.

* I chose "the old way" as it is pretty blurred what counts as my last boardgame play (like: do we count IOS versions?, do we count solo plays with IOS?, do we count 2p games - I do not usually do...and does MtG count?....).

Indonesia just has not neen played for some time and it is the only '10' game I happen to rate '9' only... I also could have chosen some other Spotter game too....

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

...Android: Netrunner counts? OK while it is OK/good game I think there should be some better choice....(again every reboot/reprint of a game by new publisher is technically also game based on licensed property, right?).

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object?

Immovable object. Irresistible force can be dumb, can backfire and can be tricked by an opponent. Immovable object is steadier and more reliable.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

Hansa. Hands down. I always win. Always win easily. I have fully grasped this (note: I think that Hansa is not that uber-great game...but good enough..and overally it has not been played for ages).

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

"flavor"...hmmm tricky but good question: Cuba popped in (I did not like the game but I really thought it was pretty flavorful)....has to be smt else for reall (my inner OCD tells that the chosen game must also be GOOD)...OK...I found it? London!!...nah..theme is just pasted on.... IF fantasy/alternate reality counts it is easily 2019: The Arctic.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?

Die Macher. #1, complex, somewhat out-dated, old, has charm = charismatic, powerful,...

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?

When did "10 Questions for Everyone"-geeklist jump the shark?

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

Coma.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

Indonesia. COMPONENTS AND CROWDED (NOT-THAT-FUNCTIONAL) BOARD!

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?

N/A for me. I do not like pets. If forced...may some rare spider??

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

Used to be Republic of Rome....now it is perhaps original Netrunner (I still have a couple of starters from 90:ies and a couple of dozen random singles...I always thought I should "buy" more back then...but I did not...).

Bonus Question:

11) What question should I ask in my next geeklist?

Your Essen 2013 hot and high buzz game?

0) As your geeklist entry, select the game you last played before posting in this geeklist.
Recent pre-order finally arrived, and I've been humbled in both games so far, losing as both Jack (on the 2nd night) and as the Inspector, to my lovely wife...who is a lot more devious/surreptitious than I thought :|

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
I don't actually play any of these...I suppose Monty Python Fluxx over Monopoly Deal, but I am interested in both the LOTR and Game of Thrones games

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
At board games? The irrestible force, because how could you resist trading with them that one card they need to win the game?

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
I'll go with Stone Age, just because I've turned around my losing streak by playing against AI on the iOS app, and I can't think of a better answer. Plus playing so many games has taught me what to focus on and what to ignore/reduce emphasis on

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Alhambra? Never been, but the faded color scheme and centralized fountains make me feel as if I'm building a desert palace.
*Edit: I just realized that this was the question I suggested from the June 2013 list...too cool! Too bad I didn't recognize it at the time, so I'm pretty sure I lose cool points there

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
Galaxy Trucker....because I often rush into making plans, and find out halfway through executing them that they are fatally flawed and will eventually blow up in my face

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
I'm going to agree with political and religious items...focus on the gaming!

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
A legitmate substitute that allowed me to spend quality time with my wife, friends and family, with a degree of mental engagement. Maybe nightly crossword puzzles, or a really good TV series? A book club?

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
I can't even answer what my favorite game is...let alone find a flaw. I guess I can say for Carcassone, I find that sometimes it can bog down when people are good enough to pin your meeples into structures that can never be finished. But even that, if wielded effectively, is a decent strategy...just makes for a less than entertaining game.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
I'm going Pterodactyl....how cool would it be to have your own personal airplane!

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
At the moment, El Grande....hoping for a reprint, since I've heard so many good things about it.

---I think this was the last game I played at game night...

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?

The immovable object, he would want to go to the irresistible force but simply can't.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

I would probably lose, but probably not shamefully in a Dominion tournament...and oh yeah I'm my families two time Power Scrabble Champion

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

I'm not sure I've played enough of these games to make a good call on this...Helvetia maybe...simply because I think getting your kids strategically married off is fun and probably really happened a lot back in the day.

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?

Hanabi...I can tell you a lot about others, but I don't really know myself.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
Social Security Number....DOB...

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

Enough money to offset all my debt and live comfortably with enough distractions that I wouldn't want to play games...

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

First I have decide what my favorite game is...probably Santiago...I think the biggest flaw is that the overseer can take an inferior bribe with no penalty.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?

Lions

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

I regret nothing...

0) As your geeklist entry, select the game you last played before posting in this geeklist.

This is the last game I played (although it's one of my favorites anyway).

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

Hmmm, I'd have to say Battlestar Galactica.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?

I'd definitely have to say the immovable object. Since Newton's Third Law proves that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, any attempt the irresistible force makes to move the immovable object will hurt the irresistible force equally. This argument makes no sense, but that's not the point.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

I feel most qualified to play Galaxy: The Dark Ages in a tournament, mostly because I reached the finals at WBC for it once.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc.), which best captures the flavor of that location through it's gameplay and/or theme? Why?

If Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage can be counted, I definitely vote for that. Assuming Hannibal can't be counted, Alhambra is a great game.

5) If you were a board game, which board game would you be?

If I were a board game I would definitely be Here I Stand. I'm not sure why, but I'd probably enjoy being fought over.

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?

Why, God?

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

Way more money than I'm willing to think about.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

Stupid players.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would it be?

Sheep cards from Settlers of Catan. They must feel so unwanted; it's really sad.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

Original version of Slapshot. Not a doubt in my mind.

Bonus question:

11) What question should I ask in my next geeklist?

Why are there 11 questions in a Geeklist titled "10 Questions For Everyone!"?

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?
Right now i'd go with Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game. It's fast, fun, and looks great.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?
Being irresistible myself... well, I'm biased

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?
Good question, Sounds funny, but the game I seem to win most of the time is Love Letter. As for a meatier game I'd go with Memoir 44.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?
Can I pick Arkham Horror?

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?
That's a hard one. I could not be just one game.....

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?
this one...

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?
The money and time to backpack, fish, and hunt for a year in my native state of California.

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?
Like most games, there is a rush to try and get to the finish, the most points, the last kill, Memoir is no exception.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?
A dolphin.

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?
I have most of the games I want. Even if I did pay too much, but I'd go with... Dune at this point.

Bonus Question:

11) What question should I ask in my next geeklist?
Wait, what....

0) As your geeklist entry, select the game you last played before posting in this geeklist.

This is my second partial play of this game. This time we played with more correct rules than last time (IE, we remembered to trash political cards whose events occurred among other rules). Really enjoy this one and hope the third time is the charm for actually completing a game. Once everyone knows how to play, I expect this game will only take 2-3 hours to play, but that first play for people can be a bit daunting and difficult to understand how everything works together. In this particular session, Democracy held on to win by one point after four rounds of an incomplete game over Nazism. Communism was much farther behind point wise, but was well set up to compete if we went the distance. If you enjoy Twilight Struggle, you will likely enjoy this one as well although it does play quite differently with each ideology having a deck that gradually is added to the game.

1) What's your favorite game based on a licensed property?

Uncertain, I would choose between Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit or War of the Ring (First Edition). Queen's Gambit has so many fun plastic pieces and interesting minigames that connect together fairly well. War of the Ring really used dice and cards in a very solid and enjoyable way.

2) Which would win, the irresistible force or the immovable object? Why?

I would say the Immovable Object since the name suggests the purpose is not to move. Irresistible force may do other things to the immovable object, but I would expect lack of movement.

3) What game do you feel most qualified to play in a tournament?

I have never really played in a tournament, but would likely feel most qualified to play Race for the Galaxy (recognizing I would likely still get destroyed by a number of people here) as it is one of my most played games and perhaps Blokus as I have played this one a fair number of times and usually done quite well.

4) Of board games named after places of the world (cities, regions, etc), which best captures the flavor of that location through its gameplay and/or theme? Why?

London (first edition) is what I first think of in regards to this question due to the board and the cards which name specific buildings as you build the city and fight poverty.

A close second would be Himalaya with the snowy board, the yaks, and the thematic pieces/buildings and theme. Heck, if you play with the expansion, there is even yetis!

5) If you were a board game which board game would you be?

Die Macher - largely because this is a game about a different culture than mine and I enjoy learning about different cultures and travel. Also, this game, while fairly simple to learn, is considered a fairly complex game which may or may not describe a bit about me. The game also requires a time commitment to play which when one considers my "love language" is quality time, fits right into who I am! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Five_Love_Languages)

6) What question should never be asked on this geeklist series?

Anything that deals with politics...keep that to RSP.

7) What would it take for you to give up gaming for 1 year?

Another interesting hobby that can take up that time?

8) What is the biggest flaw in your favorite game?

I can't define which game is actually my favorite so I'm not sure how to answer this question. My favorite game to play really depends on the group with whom I'm gaming.

9) If you could domesticate one wild animal for people to own as pets, what would you pick?

Alligator/crocodile? Could be interesting to ride an alligator/crocodile in the water...

10) What out of print game do you most regret missing out on?

War of the Ring Collector's Edition - perhaps this one? All the pictures I see make this look quite nice. I'm happy with my regular game but the Deluxe version does look fine!
