This list attempts to document the sequence of the various Bohnanza sets while explaining the differences between the German and English editions. Only Bohnanza-compatible titles are addressed here, so the omission of Bohn Hansa (aka Bean Trader) is intentional.

Amigo - 1997 - German (no game text)

The set that started it all. An excellent way to introduce non-Germans and non-gamers to the Eurogaming hobby. My family calls it simply "the bean game".

6 Garten Bohnen (Garden Beans)
8 Rote Bohnen (Red Beans)
10 Augenbohnen (Blackeyed Beans)
12 Sojabohnen (Soy Beans)
14 Brechtbohnen (Green Beans)
16 Saubohnen (Stink Beans)
18 Feuerbohnen (Chili Beans, aka "Fire Beans")
20 Blauebohnen (Blue Beans)
6 "3. Bohnenfelden" (3rd Beanfields)

Amigo - 1997 - German (no game text)

A simple but effective (and essential) addition to the game, raising the player limit from five to seven.

4 Kakaobohnen (Cocoa Beans)
22 Weinbrandbohnen (Brandy Beans)
24 Kaffeebohnen (Coffee Beans)

This expansion set was revised and expanded in 2001 (see entry #8 below).

Amigo - 1998 - German (no game text)

Perhaps the least-liked Bohnanza expansion; I don't really know anybody who enjoys hauling beans around on (or pirating them from) trade vessels. But I like having the two additional bean-types when I'm feeling particularly experimental.

26 Wachsbohnen (Wax Beans)
28 Mokkabohnen (Mocha Beans)
and a bunch of island & pirate ship stuff we almost never use

Although the extra bean types in this set never achieved true fame on their own, the Wachsbohnen did selflessly donate their artwork to the English edition of Bohnanza (see entry #6 below).

Amigo - 2000 - German (no game text)

Stand-alone game for 1 or 2 players using many familiar Bohnanza mechanics, but replacing trading with a "forced donation" system whereby you leave some of your cards on the table for your opponent to deal with. Three automated Bean-Mafia Bosses act as surrogate opponents and compete for your beans by stealing them from you.

13 Stangenbohnen (Bar Beans)
16 Puffbohnen (Broad Beans)
19 Kidneybohnen (Kidney Beans)
some "re-runs" of other beans from the base set
3 Bean-Mafia Boss cards
one 3. Bohnenfeld (3rd Beanfield)

This set offers one of my favorite bean puns: the broad bean.

Lookout Games - 2000 - German (game text; could be a problem for the non-German speaker)

The first offering from Lookout Games, a small company formed by Bohnanza alumni Uwe Rosenberg, Hanno Girke, and Marcus Casasola-Merkle. Use your harvest earnings to buy western-themed buildings which grant you special privileges and add to your score.

32 building cards related to particular beans:
4 Farm (Garden Beans)
4 Bank (Red beans)
4 Hotel (Blackeyed Beans)
4 Goldmine (Soy Beans)
4 Saloon (Green Beans)
4 General Store (Stink Beans)
4 Blacksmith (Chili Beans)
4 Sheriff's Office (Blue Beans)

The special buildings are a blast to play with, and have an interesting effect on how you feel about particular bean types. The consensus seems to be that this is the best Bohnanza expansion; for me it's a must-have.

This expansion set was reprinted and expanded by Amigo (see entry #9 below)

Translated/Combined - Rio Grande Games - 2000 - English (no game text)

Functionally identical to the original Amigo set plus the first expansion set, and translated to English. There is one cosmetic difference, though: While the original Expansion set included 22 Weinbrandbohnen (Brandy Beans), this edition substitutes 22 Wax Beans -- with the same Weinbrandbohne beanometer (4/7/9/11) but using the Wachsbohnen artwork from La Isla Bohnitâ. I assume Rio Grande Games made this change because the drunken Brandy Bean artwork was deemed unsuitable for the American audience.

4 Cocoa Beans
6 Garden Beans
8 Red Beans
10 Blackeyed Beans
12 Soy Beans
14 Green Beans
16 Stink Beans
18 Chili Beans
20 Blue Beans
22 Wax Beans

Lookout Games - 2001 - German (no game text)

This set offers rules for "mutating" your fields from one bean type to the next (more frequent) bean type, thus allowing mixed fields. In addition, 33 new Bonus cards specify various "gene codes" (combinations of different bean types on the same field). Play a Bonus card when its gene code matches one of your fields, and you score extra Bohnenpfennige (bean pennies).

10 Bonus (30 Bohnenpfennige)
11 Bonus (50 Bohnenpfennige)
12 Bonus (70 Bohnenpfennige)

A very nice twist that puts a whole new spin on trading.

Revised - Amigo - 2001 - German (no game text)

The newer version of the original expansion set, offering the same three bean types as before and adding mildly interesting Field Beans, very interesting Job cards that reward you with extra coins for having specific numbers of beans on two adjacent fields, and handy 1st & 2nd Beanfields.

3 Ackerbohnen (Field Beans)
4 Kakaobohnen (Cocoa Beans)
22 Weinbrandbohnen (Brandy Beans)
24 Kaffeebohnen (Coffee Beans)
39 Auftrag (Job) cards
7 "1. Bohnenfelden" (1st Beanfields)
7 "2. Bohnenfelden" (2nd Beanfields)
1 "3. Bohnenfeld" (3rd Beanfield)

The 1st and 2nd Beanfields signify the sequence of your fields (essential to proper use of Job cards), but are also handy for keeping the table tidy. My family always wants them even when we play straight-up vanilla Bohnanza.

Revised - Amigo - 2001 - German (game text; could be a problem for the non-German speaker)

This is really two expansions in one: a revised version of High Bohn for Bohnanza, plus a brand-new (and somewhat parallel) Prohibohn expansion for Al Cabohne. There are some instructional "phase cards" included for both games, but the real meat and potatoes are as follows:

High Bohn
36 building cards (4 different ones for each of the 8 bean types in the German base set, plus 4 buildings for the new Cognacbohnen)
22 Cognacbohnen (Cognac Beans)

Prohibohn
21 Establishment cards
2 Police Station cards
1 Raid card
and the same 22 Cognacbohnen as above

This is an expanded reprint of the original High Bohn published by Lookout Games (see entry #5 above) with significant revisions to the western buildings (all of the online translations I have seen are for the older High Bohn, which certainly leads to some confusion).

High Bohn is being printed yet again in "High Bohn Plus" from Rio Grande Games (see entry #17 below).

Lookout - 2002 - German (no game text)

Female versions of some of the original beans, with slightly better beanometers than their male counterparts -- increase your farming efficiency by harvesting when a female is on top. Schminkbohnen offer a way to steal bean coins from your opponents.

1 (f) Rote Bohne (Red Bean)
2 (f) Augenbohnen (Blackeyed Beans)
3 (f) Sojabohnen (Soy Beans)
3 (f) Brechbohnen (Green Beans)
4 (f) Saubohnen (Stink Beans)
5 (f) Feuerbohnen (Chili Beans)
5 (f) Blaue Bohnen (Blue Beans)
9 (f) Schminkbohnen (Makeup Beans)
1 Quotenfeld (Quota Field)

This is the first (and thus far only) Lookout Games expansion that has actual bean cards, and thus their first set with four-color printing on the card backs.

My kids especially like this expansion; it offers nice variety with a very low learning curve. I'm the only family member with a Y chromosome, so the "ladies are better" theme goes over quite well in my house.

Lookout - 2003 - German (no game text)

Described by its author as "Bohnanza meets Risk". New "territory cards" create the Bohnreich, a gameboard of hexagonally adjacent cards that grant special privileges to the players who occupy them. Bean coins earned from harvested fields are spent to launch attacks into adjacent territories. Victory is determined by territorial control.

Lookout - 2003 - German (no game text)

"Genghis Bean" is a variation on Bohnaparte, with the same game engine but different kinds of territories. This complete expansion set works independently of Bohnaparte -- but you can also mix the two together for up-to-seven-player warfare involving Napoleonic armies and the "Mongol Bean Hordes" fighting to control the Bohnreich.

5 FeldLager (Field Camp) in new colors
3 Stadt (City)
3 Dorf (Village)
3 Plantagen (Plantation)
3 Steppe
3 Wald (Wood or Forest)
2 Edelsteinfeld (Gemstone Field)
2 Fluss (River)

3 Rider Bands (in different colors, matching each Steppe)
5 Karren (Cart) cards (for stockpiling card draws)
60 tokens in 5 new colors

The box and rules spell the title two ways: "Dschingis Bohn" and "Dschinghis Bohn". I assume the former is the intended correct spelling and the latter is the typo.

Lookout - 2003 - language-independent

Sold for pennies at Spiel 2003 in Essen, these tiny counters (sized the same as those in Bohnaparte and Dschingis Bohn) had no associated rules. Lookout Games was (is?) collecting user suggestions, but as of Spring 2004 none have appeared on their website.

Lookout - 2004 - German (game text; could be a problem for the non-German speaker)

2004 was a busy year for Bohnanza: not since 2000 have we had something from all three Bohnanza publishers, and this is the only time we've had four new releases in the same year!

An Essen 2004 release, Telebohn presents the concept of "hostile takeovers" in which players steal each others' fields. This expansion introduces the Schnittbohne (Snip Bean) which, when harvested, gives the player action cards which allow different special effects.

Revised - Amigo - 2004 - German (no game text except on the reference card)

Bohnaparte was reprinted by Amigo in their familiar telescoping box format. The counters were upgraded to thicker stock and made square instead of round.

Amigo - 2004 - German (no game text – well, no cards even!)

This mini-expansion set was given away at Essen 2004 to folks who purchased Amigo's revised Bohnaparte and surrendered the cardboard "sprue" therefrom. It comprises a big plastic "bean coin" and some new rules.

Translated/Combined - Rio Grande - 2004 - English (game text)

The first English expansion from Rio Grande Games, High Bohn Plus combines elements from the Amigo edition of High Bohn and the revised "Erweiterungs-Set". I believe it contains everything from High Bohn along with the Ackerbohnen (Field Beans) and Auftrag (Job) cards from the expansion set. Since Rio Grande's base game already includes the bean cards from the expansion set, it appears that (RGG Bohnanza + High Bohn Plus) = (Amigo Bohnanza + Erweiterungs-Set + High Bohn).
