The usual GeekList report of the day's games so people can rate and report.

Note: Numbers were down so we lost money today. Thankfully there is still a buffer so there's nothing to worry about unless this is a trend!

Played this twice.

First time was a 6 player game - can't remember who was there or won so please add your name if you want.

Then the last game of the day with Jonno, Sam, and John. Jonno won by chaining three Objective at the very end of the game to storm to a win by a single measly point! Nicely done.

Great fun, nice and light, and feels like a natural successor to 7 Wonders.

Ave!

My Kickstarter copy arrived so I was itching to try it.

Played 2 games 3 player with John and Jonno.

It is a quick game that has a pleasing amount of strategy with just the right amount of messing with each other.

I can't remember who won, except for the second game my Boss died. Sob!

John kept notes so maybe he'll report?

John and Jonno again (you'll notice a theme here).

John seemed to be slow warming to the game yet still won by just pipping Jonno to the last point. 3 players is easier on the AP than 4.

Jonno's Print-n-Play card version. Played with in addition John and Sam.

It's a bit odd but can see it tries to differentiate from Dominion. I'm not sure what I feel about this game. Maybe another play is warranted. And yet I won - which I'm not sure is deserving really.

Played with Sam's newly traded copy, with John and Jonno.

I agreed with John that this brings little original to warrant owning both. Still it was the usual SW fun and really should be played more often in my life.

Oh and I won, which is nice.

A simple, quick and OK 'push your luck' game. The winner made a fortune as the only one left in the temple at the end of one of the five rounds, and no-one came close.

(Please don't expect me to remember people's names - it's something I find very difficult!)

It could be an interesting area influence game - each courtier is in a group, with spaces for one to five cubes, and if you have majority control of them, you can use them for getting points as one of several people named on a card. Majority control of influence in a group gives a power..

.. but it's not. It takes time to get going (you can only use people when they are 'full' and that only usually happens through neutral cubes after someone has got an easy card. It never felt that what happened before then mattered. There's too much luck: I got the best card seen purely through being lucky with influence (used to place influence cubes) and power (typically used to break rules) cards rather than any skill. The limit on cubes isn't small enough and no-one ever went short. The end is too sudden, with the winner usually being the person who had one more turn than the rest.

Three people were very close 23 (me) - 24 - 25, but really it made me want to play the old Knizia 'trying to get to the top in Rome' game where you need to get votes (yours and other players') to get to the next level and whose name I can't remember.

Played out in the beer garden at the end. I think the table was Matt, Matt's miss, Rob, Jonno, Mark, an older gent, and me.

I don't get on with Avalon. Not figured out how to figure out who's what, and spent this game with the good and evil entirely the wrong way round.

You're creating a city using hex tiles which have residential / industrial / office / etc features on them. Good stuff increases your reputation/population (and thus score) and/or increases your income. Bad stuff does the reverse. Many tiles do both (e.g. give you income but lower the tone) and many affect or are affected by other tiles: adjacent, yours, and/or anyone's.

So there's plenty to think about with a complex economy to get going.. and I messed that up totally. It didn't help that I failed to get all but one of the four public and one private bonus points - I was hoping to get three, including three 'worst's - and came last by a mile.

The 'stop the runaway leader' mechanism is quite nice - the more points you have, the more your reputation and income fall - but I don't like the presentation. It grows on people, apparently.

Very light and quick card game played in rounds, with the aim being to be the survivor with the highest value card. The various people on the cards have various powers to get each other.

At one point, I had to lose. I could not discard the best card (you lose for doing that) and the other one meant swapping hands with the sole other player left in the round - i.e. giving them the best card.

It started out as being Marting and Rich playing this and as I was about to start explaining the rules, Matt, Carrae and Steve came in an were invited to join.

It is a worker placement game revolving around making wine. Matt won (I think) Though most people were quite close.

Finally the same players as Viticulture played this.

It has a bidding mechanic at it's core and has quite a lot going on.

I came dead last with 30 points and I think Carrae won with 61.

Having just bought this from The Works, when someone else had brought it, I wanted to try it.

You're one of the tribes on Easter Island, where prestige comes from carving statues and transporting them to be erected on the coast. The bigger they are and the further away from the quarry, the more points they are worth. (You can add hats for extra prestige and, as the quarry for them is on the other end of the island, places that are good for statues are not so good for hats.)

There are some interesting mechanisms, but because there wasn't a copy of the rules in the box, we did get some things wrong (or I misunderstood the explanation!) around things like playing statues - you can place on any vacant site without needing a special unit to reserve it first, for example. We were also playing a much shorter version of the game as one of the players had to go.

It did make me glad to have bought a copy and I'd like a longer go.

Oh, I think I just (one point) won this one.

Another one I bought at The Works, in their previous sale, but hadn't tried.

It was described as being good, but with the theme having no link to the actual game play. It's certainly good, and I can almost see the theme working.

There are five national companies - think East India Company - trading in seven commodities. This leads to a row of thirty five (5x7) tiles, nominally going from SE Africa round the coast of the Indian Ocean to the East Indies.

In a turn, you auction off some ship cards, then each player plays some ship cards. If they have more ship cards of a national company than anyone else, they get to move to the next tile of that company, and get the goods. But playing ship cards attracts pirates and when enough ship cards have been played, all of the cards of the most popular company (or companies) have to be discarded, making it easy for someone else to acquire control.

At the end, when someone has reached the last tile, whoever has the most of the possible five of each good gets points (fewer if more than one person ties for most). There are also points for having control of companies at the end, having the most money (money paid by the winner of each auction is split between everyone else), and having cashed in sets of tiles (the more companies' tiles, the more valuable).

Probably the best game I played today. Looking, it's apparently particularly good for three, which is what we had.

Oh, it was Coup - just an earlier edition.

It was another 'costs 75p - £1 a card' one, and was like Love Letter but different , as here you can bluff about what you have. Each player has two cards, with various powers, and you're trying to be the last one with any left.

I'm not sure which of the three is my favourite...

I was invited to join a game of Terra Mystica with Andrew, Terry, Grant and Michael. Terra Mystica is a game that I've seen played, but had actively avoided up until now. I'm going through a phase where I don't really fancy playing a long game unless it is Battlestar Galactica.

That has clearly been my loss, as it really is a great game, which I hope to play again soon. I think that it helped that Andrew and Terry did a very good rules explanation. I think that it was won by the game owner, Andrew. I came 2nd last, but I definitely know things that I would do different next time, which is always the sign of a good game to me.

After lunch the same 5 that had tackled Terra Mystica started a game of Caylus. I'd played the card game Caylus Magna Carta before, so I kind of knew what was going on.

Unfortunately, we ran out of time about 2/3 of the way through. I was ahead at that point, but I doubt if I would have held on to the lead if the game had run its full course.
