It's August! That means last-minute summer vacations for some, and a return to a more normal rhythm for others. Either way, you have more opportunities for solitaire gaming, right?

Use this thread to post about games you want to play or will play in these dog days of summer (or cat days of winter, for those of you south of the equator).

Also be sure to subscribe to the Solitaire Games on Your Table Monthly Geeklist SUBSCRIPTION THREAD.

SESSION REPORT CONTEST!
Need some extra incentive to play and post this month? OK: I'm putting up 100 Geek Gold plus whatever is tipped in this post as a prize pool for the best solitaire session report written this month. Please post it in the main game page and just put a link in this thread, as my secondary goal with this is to get more session reports in the archives. First place gets 70% of the proceeds, second place gets 20%, and third place gets 10%, decided by what posts get the most thumbs by the end of the month (only reports posted this month are eligible).

I want to give a tip o' the hat to

I bought this from D himself awhile ago. I have the other two PNP (Shadow of D and Dungeon of D). Even though I would consider SHADOW OF D the best in the series, Adventure of D is fun as well. At first I hated the artwork, but now I have embraced the 70s crappy artwork, it works for what it is and I now love it. Some pictures of my game:

So after the game sitting on my shelf for about a year I finally thought I'd give All Things Zombie: The Boardgame a go.

So I unwrapped the game. Punched the counters and read the rules in a couple of hours. I also needed to review the FAQ as there are a couple of hmmm what do I do in this situation rules (like shooting into a melee containing zombies and a survivor).

It was a fairly sunny day and the game has a small footprint so I thought I'd put it on a tray and play it outside. I have never posted a session report before so I thought I would also take my first stab with some pics from each turn.

So here is my first ever session report of ATZ Scenario 1: A few bullets more.

Lets just say it played a bit like a low grade zombie flick. Never run off on your own and stay with the group!

The tactics are a little basic and there is a fair amount of luck however it's a good diversion and most important it was fun imagining the hoard of zombies.

I enjoyed it so much I played a second game.

This time I managed to evade the zombies a bit better and searched a few more houses. On the 4th Tonya found an assault rifle and the 5th Becky found a grenade. A huge stack of zombies was really close to Becky however they got the initiative rushing her. She ran to the edge of the board. Becky was already injured so I decided to exit the girls. Now wish I had popped the grenade into the stack to see e carnage (it would have been 1d6 against each zombie with a 4 or less to kill). So second game was longer and a win however there was never a moment really where I didn't worry about getting swamped.

It's a good light game. Not to tactical but scratched the itch and was fun solo. Not sure I'd play 2 player with this one though although later missions may change that view.

Edit: Played another game of this scenario this evening.
Boy was that a marathon it took 2.5 hours!
Kept the girls together most of the game however due to stacks I had to split them and eventually Tonya's luck ran out.

Third solo play of scenario 1.
This was a loss with the death of Tonya who ran away from a stack of 7 zombies into a stack of 4 who make her lose her last 2 lives.
Tonya had a shotgun, pistol and 2nd medkit as first was used on Beck (should have used this).
Beck had vest and ammo.
All but 1 building entered although 2 still needed searching.
Long game for what it was.

I'm sure this game makes it to the list every month (I'm new in these parts), but I just finished playing a few sessions with the Dark Pharaoh expansion and am moving on. I am trying each expansion undiluted with the base game (meaning I separate out all other expansion components, even investigators). I want to get a real good feel for each one. Next up is the Dunwich Horror.

I finally won against "Samael", 86 to 82! Samael has the distinct advantage of taking expensive cards without having to pay for them, so I found myself making sub-optimal moves just to ensure he gets cheap ones. Nevertheless, this is my first win out of 5 games, so I still feel good about it.

I purchased this game in an auction a few months ago, and I was finally able to get in my first two plays this week. I played the first two scenarios and won them both, although the second game was a close one. The game is a blast to play and reminds me a lot Ogre which I played a lot when I was younger.

Getting missile hits on the titan was crucial to my success in both games, and making sure the missile ships had cover to survive long enough to launch at close range quickly became my go to strategy. I look forward to trying some of the other scenarios to see how well this game holds up to repeated plays.

Mission 138, 16-December-1943, Bremen, Germany

Writer's Block flies its second mission with the 152nd BS/281st BG on a return trip to Bremen, Germany. Heavy flak rattles the plane and it misses the target, but it does destroy 1 x Bf-109 and 2 x Me-410 enemy fighters, along with 1 x FW-190 that is a probable. Three crewmen are killed and four others wounded as Writer's Block is lightly damaged - she'll return to action tomorrow but the same cannot be said of her crew.

I also posted my current play of this on the wargames on your table geeklist (Item for Geeklist "Wargames On Your Table - August 2013" ), but I am so far really enjoying this as a solo game, so I thought I would post here as well.

This a 2 player wargame with no hidden information, so as long as you can split your personality on alternate turns, it's pretty easy to play solo. It's also a pretty asymmetrical battle (US forces have fewer, stronger units, and howitzers vs Indians with many, many units), which to my mind makes it much easier and more fun to play solo (or at all).

Another thing I like about it -- there's definitely a lot of movement, and I expect there were definitely be different phases of the battle. It's also got cool "chrome" like the ability to set grass fires that block movement and Line of Sight.

I am learning to write my first VASSAL module (this play is a play test of the module I've made so far). That has made it more fun for me. Plus, having it on VASSAL it makes it a lot easier to play when I get a chance.

Here's the main map from an early turn(The map graphics from the game are a major selling point for me):

I am currently on Turn 6 -- The US forces were just pursuing the Indian units that were hustling to the main camp to sound the alert, and now the US forces are starting to assume a defensive posture for the oncoming Indian hordes. I really think I picked a poor spot for the US to defend, but we'll see.

Edit 8/25:
Well, the battle is over. I won't spoil the ending, you can read the whole story here:

Been thinking heavily about trading/selling this and all expansions for a long time. Just don't have another player to play face to face with now or for years past. Thought I might make some more money and space for games that will be more likely to get played.

Then I decided I better sleeve the cards and play it solitaire, just because. I've played it solitaire years in the past with some very simple yet effective AI rules. This time I decided to play the best I could for both sides, without taking a side myself.

My play logs can be found here: Battlelore play record.

I played through the first two scenarios in the core game: Agincourt and First Chevauchee. What fun playing it like this, even with hidden information since it's a card driven game. I don't often play multiplayer games solitaire without a good AI ruleset/variant. I've played a few Commands & Colors games most of my gaming career and am very familiar with the rules. I'm inspired now to keep BL and its expansions so I can explore what it has to offer.

Normally I feel like I need to be striving against an AI of some sort to play for a challenge and tension in addition to enjoying the narrative a game creates. This was fun just playing it out the best I could for both sides and seeing how the story developed.

The French didn't do so hot, getting repulsed at Agincourt (big surprise) and suffering a narrow loss to the English at First Chevauchee. The second battle was more of a Pyrrhic victory for the English as they took heavy casualties and only narrowly won.

Looking forward to getting into the Lore rules in a few scenarios. I'm also inspired now to break out Memoir '44 and try it solitaire as well.

Carcassonne was the game that brought me into the hobby, and, perhaps because of that, it has remained my favorite game. Unfortunately, however, I rarely get to play it with others. This was the first game I introduced to my family, and everyone enjoyed it. But, as I continued to add new games to the collection, my girls quickly decided they no longer liked it. My wife actually enjoys it (in its vanilla form), but she refuses to play a 2P game with me. And so...I turn to the lovely people of BGG and the many solitaire variants they so kindly have provided.

I normally use the SoloPlay rules, which I enjoy quite a bit. I've played somewhere in the neighborhood of two dozen times. I enjoy the puzzle aspect of the variant and its altered scoring rules.

I've also played using the Carc Island variant by Solo Nexus. I like this one too but luck is more a factor than in the SoloPlay variant. I haven't played this one more than a few times so far.

And then, I come across this crazy geeklist...Lonesome Journey - How I Turned My Entire Collection Into A Solitaire Smorgasbord (the title says it all)...where Bryon has come up with another variant for Carc. I gave it a shot tonight. Twice. I scored 146 and then 221 points. I'm not 100 percent sure I played correctly, but it was fun nonetheless. It's quick as well. I used only the base game tiles. Of course, the more familiar you are with them, I'm sure the better you will do.

Here are the pics of the final layouts. So pretty...

Here's a link to the AAR I posted, the scenario takes place in Nov 1942 and is a medium sized battle where the US resists a Japanese attempt to take Guadalcanal:

I borrowed this from a friend, and just had time for one solo bash. Or more to the point, that was all the time I chose to allocate, as I found the game extremely uninteresting. When I play a solo game I'm happy to allocate Agricola / Le Havre / Mercator / Yggdrasil levels of thought, but that wasn't an option for Castle Panic.

In the first round two of the big bads, the orc and the goblin came out, and it was all terribly downhill from there. After taking a lot of damage early there was a lull where there were few monsters, so of course my cards could rarely hit them. Then came another surge and I was overwhelmed again.

Overall, I was underwhelmed and sent the game back home, thank you Bort.

Been staring at this on my shelf for awhile now, and before its maiden voyage at game night on Saturday I broke this one out solo to get a handle on the rules using the priority list posted in the Variants section here on BGG.

Solo Claustrophobia

Bottom line is that it's playable solo, and very learnable, but not a regular solo joint, as even the solo system still requires a few judgement calls (which I hate in an AI) and it still seems like it takes too much agency out of the player's side. If this game had a Gears of War-like AI card system, it would be perfect (and probably better than GoW, frankly).

2 player thought? It. Is. Tremendous.

A fun, tactical dungeon crawler that is AMAZINGLY quick and astonishingly simple to learn, but still allows for a good amount of depth in tactics and a lot of replayability. Plus, it's scenario driven, so there's a good bit of narrative to be had. Way fewer moving parts than Descent, well produced, and goes great with beer and a friend (like most things). A joy to play!

So, finally got a copy of this after a buddy of mine was talking about it and set up to play through the training episodes today. Got through them all pretty easily and I look forward to seeing what more this game has to offer beyond the training grounds. I'm ready to land on the beach!

Board 2: DN.
Finally got a re-shipment at my FLGS and managed to pick this up.

I am enjoying the immersive theme which is enhanced by components that are great - they aren't FFG wonderful, but they exude a certain... "made with love" feeling that I haven't found in many other games.

Love it

Got this from my Secret Santa last winter, read the rules, and started playing two nights ago.

First game, I was like, wow, this is pretty easy. I loaded up a bunch of civies and heroes in the Town Center, and was like, come and get me Zombies! After a couple moved into town, I reread the rules and realized that my awesome defense was in fact an epic disaster, as I just lost the game!

On my third game, and looking for my first win. Maybe Pickles will be the key this time.

Okay, yes I am doing this one again. But this time I am kind of giving a Session Report here as well.

Just a disclaimer before I begin: Many Heroes Lost Their Lives In the Making of This Game.

Let's start near the end and give you the situation and then I'll tell you how we got there (you may have to click on the image, if I made the image too big it would take up too much room):

Chaos and Zombies and Raiders and Wounded Civilians, oh my! This was the situation with about 4 cards left in the game:

I was gleeful beyond comprehension to be in the spot that I was. 4 cards to go, the prospect of surviving to the end (after only my 4th game) had me bubbling with hope. But as Red said in Shawshank Redemption, "hope is a dangerous thing."

So let's go back to the beginning, and see what things were like at first (or as much as I can remember, the passage of such a horrid fight has left me with holes in my memory, but I shall do my best):

To say the least this was not a great start, an 8 and a 7, 6, and 5. Wow, I thought I was toast. Especially considering I didn't start with a doctor or a researcher. It was the Sheriff, the Deputy, the Mayor, and Pickles. These brave souls were gonna have to survive the onslaught.

Here is what the few who survived remember:

Sheriff Hunt perished in the BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE, sacrificing himself to save a group of clueless refugees.

A little later the Deputy took it upon himself to reclaim the Mountain Road, trying to make his way to the Mines to get ammo for the town, he was ambushed by ZEDS and was never heard from again.

Mayor Herrandez, upon hearing the news that a second lawman, and their last and best and greatest fighter went down, had a NERVOUS BREAKDOWN and disappeared, leaving the town to fend for itself.

To say the least morale in Farmingdale was low. It was left up to PICKLES to continue the fight. And fight on he did, going up to the farm again and again to fetch supplies, he never let the town down in its time of need. As the zeds approached closer and doom was just over the horizon....

MR. JOHNSON appeared with a whole truckload of guns, and he put them to good use, holding the center of town, blasting each horde of Zeds that approached. Then, if that wasn't enough Johnson ran out to the Mines alone, secured more ammo and made a defense on the outer perimeter of the Mountain Road, completing the job the Deputy set out to do. After securing the road, he headed back to town to meet an oncoming, unstoppable Z-horde:

After a couple blasts of the shotgun, and for reasons unknown, he jumped into hand-to-hand with the Zeds, killing them, and himself. A hero's end for sure.

Then the DOC showed up and began helping the wounded civilians, sensing impending doom, the Doc went BERSERK, rushed out of town to tangle with a Zed horde, defeated them, got wounded, again another hero went to the Mines for AMMO, and came back safely to town.

By now, of course, there were only a few Civilian groups left to defend the town, they were barricaded as best as they could. And just as the town had all it could handle, a group of RAIDERS came smashing toward Farmingdale (where is Flash Gordon when you need him?) Well we didn't have him, but Pickles went out to delay a horde of Zeds and we hoped we could last to the end before the raiders made it to town, as supplies were low.

And here is where we have to take off our hats, as PICKLES died trying to delay the Zeds as best he could, it is no doubt the town, what is left of it owes much to man's best friend. But there was no time for a funeral as the situation was bad bad bad:

But as the situation got worse, RAMPANT PARANOIA spread and, well, consumed our doctor friend, and ran him out of town, killed him, ate him? We are still not sure.

But the darkest days were upon Farmingdale, the Raiders had just plundered the city, two Zeds were fast approaching, and no HERO was here to protect us, just two very wounded civilian bands holding on by their finger nails.

BUT finally the NATIONAL GAURD made it just in the nick of time:

So in the end, we ended up with a STALEMATE, and never was I so overjoyed by such a determination of my results and playing ability.

Oh yeah, somewhere in there we did rescue some VIP survivors, and after a few pieces of pizza, we took a photo with them, as they quickly got the hell out of satan's couldron, oh, I mean, Farmingdale. And to top a victory off, and that is what we are calling it here, hey if there are more of us 'alive' than them, it's a victory, even if we do have lawsuits pending against us by the few survivors still here. Though, go right ahead folks, go ahead and find me a judge or lawyer, or hell a garbage man that's left around here.

I grabbed this last week without ever having had exposure to the first edition, any other States of Siege games or any Victory Point Games.

What a fantastic game! I played the tutorial game a couple of times (lost both!) to register the rules and then moved on to Classic, which I won quite handily (Super Weapon, Antidote, VIP Survivors, though I equipped all Refugees) and then yesterday managed to play a full campaign of the Walking Zeds. Again I won (Super Weapon, Antidote, Marteusse Interrogated, Noelle Bashed, Artifact Recovered, Equipped less than half Refugees - though two never made it to town). Had three deaths unfortunately - Hunt and Agee, buddies to the end (once my research was topped out), were killed in a Nuclear Meltdown at the power plant, while Wilson was ripped to shreds while defending the Farmingdale Mall.

I have to say, the Walking Zeds, while adding more complexity added to the Classic game a lot. Excellent, excellent second edition of a game - obviously I have limited exposure to the first edition with only one play of Classic Nightmare under my belt but every addition felt great and added to the narrative. And those components! Oh the components!

All of this said, I think I'll shelve it. While it's great a lot of my enjoyment came from the narrative and I want to preserve that for as long as possible, so I will see you next year, you wonderful creation.

Had my first try of the tutorial scenario last night after spending the weekend punching, cleaning, and bagging the chits.

I won handily thanks to a rules misinterpretation in terms of defence of villages (I was applying the town modifier for attacking zombies). To be honest, I likely would have won in any event as I rolled horribly for the zombies and brilliantly for the townsfolk but the win has a very big asterix next to it.

My initial thoughts after this first play are that I can't wait to give the tutorial another play this week with all the right rules (or at least a few more than this time!). The rule book is excellent (i.e. it put up with me referring to it every two minutes) but the minor quibble is the absence of any form of index. There is a lot of information and searching through 30 pages to find the rule on stacking of townsfolk, for example, was a bit too time consuming.

The tutorial scenario is very well thought out and really gave me an excellent handle on the basics of what you are trying to achieve as a player and the tools at your disposal to do so (the Sheriff and Mr Johnson seem pretty amazing based on my first play). All in all, an excellent introduction to the world of DotZ.

Hopefully, once I've run through the tutorial one more time, I can give the Classic game a try over the weekend and maybe muster up a more detailed report although I'm not promising anything to the standard of:

EDIT: Tried my first game of the classic setup earlier this week. It was pretty late when I started so I didn't have time to track everything - the game lasted long enough without me having to take notes.

I achieved an exceptional victory despite the loss of five heroes - Piazza (due to my forgetting about her ability to roll to avoid zeds); Seaver (left isolated in at the top of the Suburbs after sent to restore order); the Sheriff and his loyal Deputy (both did good work with the Deputy perishing to save the outskirts of Town); and Mayor Hernandez (nervous breakdown).

Professor Agee who turned up late in the game was probably MVP as her research to locate the Super Weapon and then prompt restoring of order really kept down the Outbreaks, ensuring that there were little to no zombies for the last dozen or so card draws. Johnson's foraging was a godsend as my initial ammo/supply rolls were truly awful - he also stayed alive from turn one until the end which was quite the feat. He did also manage a quite spectacular headlong charge into an advancing zombie horde that would have killed him stone dead but for his 11 roll.

No Pickles this game. Next time no doubt.

The game was a bit of a slog time-wise but this was only because not being completely familiar with what all the heroes can achieve and some of the new rules (e.g. the newly introduced Raiders and RRR). Nevertheless, I greatly enjoyed it and looking forward to my next try.
